I think this is a good Julia Roberts movie, not a good Eat, Pray, Love respresentation. If you have not read the book you will not be disappointed. If you have, you will not like the fact that you never get that aha moment!

This movie was yet another missed opportunity to teach others how to start their journey on the path to exploring their connection to the Universe and source energy. Too much time was wasted playing upon her need for a relationship with a man, and any man seemed to do. Women need to know they can happily exist on their own without having to rely on a man to justify their existence on earth.

It's not easy to translate a well-known, emotionally-charged book into a movie. I enjoyed the movie, though it seemed the feelings Elizabeth Gilbert conveyed in the book were not quite delivered to the screen. The casting was good and Javier Badam stole the show for me. I liked Richard Jenkins too.
Still, it was an enjoyable piece and the site locations were great, especially Bali. I think my expectations were set a little high.

I would recommend this movie. It was well acted and the story well told. For a book adaptation, they did a good job. The scene with Richard and Liz on the roof is one of the most well acted scenes I have seen in a really long time. Great for a girls night out or a date night. Enjoy!

I have not yet read the book so it's hard to say whether it did the book justice. I enjoyed the movie although I thought that there were parts that were perhaps a little slow moving. That being said, it was a great story and a great message. Even without experiencing her circumstances, or not being able financially to enjoy her methods of finding herself, I laughed, cried, and totally identified myself with what the main character was going through.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The book was wonderful but the movie felt like a rock skipping along the surface of all the things interesting in the book. The cast was great and did a good job with what they had
I am sure. The scenery was beautiful and made you want to explore those places further. But as for the movie? It's the perfect chick flick to watch one evening on DVD with a couple of friends.

Although this was definitely a "hollywood" movie filled with beautiful scenery, food, and somewhat selfish characters the underlying themes of recognizing what's not working in our lives and then letting go, moving on, searching for truth, forgiving ourselves and finding balance, and then allowing love back into our hearts struck a deeper chord for me. In the greater picture many of us are self-absorbed and selfish to some extent and still finding inner peace and love is the biggest theme in our lives. I would see it again..

I rarely see movies the day the come out - but it's nice not to have the influence of others. I loved the book - the EMOTION of the book. I could feel her agony, and her recovery. You LOVED that woman. This movie follows the story line nicely, gives great tours of the countries (I've visited Italy and India so appreciated every detail) but what I came away with was just oversized mental images of Julia Roberts' face. and almost no emotion in this movie except fundraising for the new house.

I went to this movie with a good friend. It's true that Julia Roberts gives a fabulous performance. That you won't be disappointed with. The movie does not draw you into the characters, but I don't think that is the purpose. I think it's more about watching this woman's journey to self discovery and what she goes through along the way to find her identity. It depends on which stage of life that one is in but I definitely took some things away from the movie and could relate to it easily. It's a light-hearted fun movie.

i liked the movie, but then, i can tolerate julia roberts pretty well. her face, close up (the lip, the lip! we get it already!) dominates practically every scene. i do think they did a great job of getting the resemblance down. all that aside, i enjoyed the movie, the premise, the beautiful settings. i happened to sit next to a woman who read the book who told me it did not follow the book too closely. so if you read the book, you might be slightly disappointed. good movie, not a great movie. great idea- im packing my bags!

Overall the movie was cute, but compared to the book you don't even begin to feel what Liz Gilbert is going through or what prompts her to make this journey. The characters portrayals of the ex-husband and the new love, Phillipe, were both wrong and it just made the premise of the everything very selfish on Liz(Julia's) part. I wish they would stop making movies from best selling books, because they never match up to the great books.

When we walked into the theater, my husband said, "See, I told you there wouldn't be any guys", but as we looked, maybe 10% of the theater was nice guys. However, as the movie progressed, my husband was drawn in as much as I, and wound up saying he'd enjoy seeing it again sometime.

Some of the other reviewers thought this was self-absorbed. Aren't we all though? This movie is about one woman's quest to find herself. She just happened to be fortunate enough to take a year off to do so. I very much liked how this movie showed her evolution away from the focus on her own misery to thinking about her life from a different point of view. One piece of advice I always remember is, 'you can't change what other people do, only how you react'. Liz shows us how she gets to a point where she reacts differently to the world - maybe a lesson for us all?

Julia Roberts is a good actress, but two and one half hoursof anyone is too much. Movie was too long and drug out in places. I notice there were at least seve women for every man in the audience, which tells you something.

This is a beautiful movie -- hard to make of a book that was so moving. Frankly, I thought Julia was a bit long in the tooth for this part -- would have liked to see a younger-looking, not quite so gaunt actress instead. The scenery was beautiful, and the rest of the actors perfect. Could have done without so many flashbacks and dream sequences (for example, Liz dancing with her ex) -- they added nothing, were boring and drawn out. Overall, though, I recommend this as a good summer escape.

I was somewhat disappointed in EAT,PRAY,LOVE. Probably because of the pre-opening hype..I think I was expecting a light-hearted feel good chick flick...which is a feeling I did not get. It was more of a travel documentary.Julia Roberts is a wonderful actress, and does an excellent job portraying Elizabeth Gilbert. The cinematography is breath-taking. I was disappointed that the ending left me with a what now feeling..I would like to know what she did when her year of travel was finished....Bottom lline: I enjoyed it, but didn't love it!!

Since the book was so popular, many of us already know the story. It did the book justice because all those wonderful visuals in my mind's eye came to life. It was beautifully directed and photographed and the casting was perfect. I was worried that it was just going to be another Julia Roberts movie, but she was exquisite! So vulnerable and believable. Richard Jenkins had one of the most touching and memorable scenes I've ever seen. I'm sure I'll see it again. The only thing that could have been "bigger", although it was done nicely, was Elizabeth's awakening scene at the Ashram when she really knows God is there. It was more profound in the book, possibly made less important in the movie. But the scene with the elephant was quiet and really cool. A nice movie - good change from all the violent, stupid ones out there.

Starts a bit slow, but fills in back-story the book neglects. Once the journey began I was completely drawn in--gorgeous photography, a sensual delight. Really captured the golden light of Rome, the smoky cacophony of India--I haven't been to Bali, but I could almost taste it. The men in this movie are gorgeous, and Julia Roberts captures her character. The books seemed to lose energy and ramble, but the movie stays on target. If you like to travel, meditate, or just want a great ride--see it.

THE MOVIE IS FABULOUS ... if you can get to the actual moral of the story. Depending on where you are in your life, "believing life is a choice," there are many things one can walk away from this movie ... minus the "Hollywood'ish" add-ons! It's still a MOVIE (they are making money), however, it's your choice to see it and truly listen to the real meanings of the story. The woman in front of us exiting said "she was going home to tell her husband their 39 year marriage was over." It can truly be empowering to women who need to see there's more to life ... it's a choice! Depending on where you are in life ... everyone will walk away with their own opinion. My "opinion" ... EXCELLENT!

"Eat Pray Love" is a well-made film in terms of its acting, especially Julia Roberts, Richard Jenkins, and Javier Bardem, but you have to get past the premise of a rich, white woman's complete self-absoroption. When she was praying to God about how much trouble she was in, I could only laugh at the absurdity of that notion.
Also, this is a minor issue, but I found the filming to be a tad too grainy for a big-budget picture. It might be what they were going after, but it did not work for me.
All that said, it is still worth seeing for the performances and for a few, very rewarding scenes, my favorite of which being the US Thanksgiving celebration in Italy.

This is a wonderful Julia Roberts movie, and it stays fairly true to the book. It does move a little slow in parts, but if you have read the book, you understand that, after all, this is a year-long journey in Liz Gilbert's life! "Richard from Texas" was perfect!!!
