A "Film Noir" Batman

To my knowledge, this is the darkest film interpretation of a Batman story ever made. It could just as correctly have been titled, "Dark Night." The villain rivals Tim Roth's character in "Rob Roy" for pure malevolent evil. And, perhaps, it is The Joker's ultimate fate that is this story's single weakness. There is no shortage of evildoers willing to kill The Batman, and for his part Batman is incapable of causing another person's death. This white glove handling of Batman's character is inconsistent with the tone of every other aspect of the film. Prices are paid by the good and honorable who stand up to the criminals, some with their lives and some with their souls. At the end Batman, the hunter, chooses to become the hunted, his "film noir" fate, at least until the next installment. But in a city with elements of pure evil can a hero unable to take a life because his conscience will not allow him to really be called, "The Dark Knight?"

I thought Heath Ledger's acting was by far the best I have ever seen. The Joker he played stole the scene every time he was in it. Batman was a excellent movie that I plan on seeing again and again! Definately go check it out!

Me and my family thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the Batman "franchise". I never thought the portrayal of the Joker by Jack Nicholson could be topped, but, Heath Ledger did an outstanding job. His Joker was so much darker but still maintained the humor of Nicholson's character. The action and scenes were fantastic.

As others have noted, it was completely action packed. The joker had so many tricks up his sleeve that he kept you guessing and kept surprising throughout. Solid performances by Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. My only gripe was about Harvey Dent and his part of the story. I won't spoil it... Go see it! You won't regret it.

This movie was everything I hoped for and more. Christian Bale did a fantastic job as Batman, again, and Heath Ledger was amazing as the Joker. The story line was perfect and really followed along nicely from Batman Begins. I love this series! I hope there is a third movie because these two movies have been spectacular! The graphics in the movie were really amazing as well! I definitely recommend seeing this movie!

The movie definitely lives up to the title... much darker than the previous, but equally well done with phenomenal acting & dialogue. With Batman maintaining his character and commitment to doing the right thing whatever the cost to himself, it was reminiscent of Jack Bauer and what is so riveting about the 24 series. The Joker was the centerpiece of the movie, keeping everyone wondering what was coming next and wrestling with what drives a maniac like that... in the words of Alfred, "some criminals aren't driven by money or power, they just want to see the world burn..."

This movie makes the other batman movies seem like cartoons. Joker is insane and Batman is more intense than ever. Gotham has flipped and we do not have a happy ending, which is more real to life. The casting is great, and i actually thought to myself in the movie, is Joker going to win, how can you stop a sick man like him.

i have never ever seen a better villain then heath ledger... absolutely better then any actor in the world as of today. i am a movie lover and this movie blew me away. there were so many times i though, "wow that was so unexpected" the movie never slows down, it gets better and better and even more suspenseful. Fantastic. best actor in the world......heath ledger made this movie.....literally made it! He made it the Best movie of this year, and i will bet my life on it, the best for the next 5 years if not more...i am deeply saddened that he has passed.......He left his final mark and it was the BEST way to go....God bless heath....

What everyone is saying is certainly true, Heath Ledger's performance is simply masterful. Yeah, you have to tolerate Bale's grunting to enjoy it, but the good far far outweighs the bad. The darkness of this film makes Burton's work look like Adam West.

Christopher Nolan has created a separate and unique universe for Batman to occupy (beyond the "cartoony" films of the past). Everyone is talking about Heath Ledger's performance, which is jaw-dropping, but Aaron Eckhart's amazing execution of Harvey Dent and his altered ego, goes unsung. One of the only negatives (besides Maggie Gyllenhal's limp performance) is that the film itself is about 25 minutes too long.

Absolutely amazing. I found myself completely engrossed in the story/movie/camera work/characters, etc. Astounding and memorable on every level. The Joker, by far, was the most sadistic character I've ever seen in any movie and will do nothing but good for Heath's legacy. Great stuff!

This Batman offering is clearly the best of the bunch (of all Batman movies and the comic book genre). It's an action packed thrill ride from start to finish. While Bale is a great Batman Ledger as The Joker steals the movie. Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is downright scary. Very enjoyable movie and highly recommended but may not be suitable for younger children due to excessive violence.

Batman The Dark Knight was the best movie ever made. I thought it was way better than Batman Begins. The parts I liked most about the movie were the action parts. This movie had a phenomenal story. If they make another Batman movie I still think that it will be the best Batman movie ever because it was all round perfection. My favorite character that's not Batman was Two Face because he was a very cool villian but the Joker is more powerful than any other character in The Dark Knight. In addition, Batman's new suit was really cool. The movie was also funny in some parts which made the movie even better. There will never be a better movie than The Dark Knight. I wish I could see it every day!!!

While fans of the post-Frank Miller dark, violent "serious" Batman will find much to appreciate in Chris Nolan's latest, 'Dark Knight' suffers from a few obvious shortcomings. The first is its length: Clocking in at two and a half hours, at about the two hour mark it begins feeling like a bit of a marathon, with action sequence after action sequence bludgeoning viewers into a sort of numbness. It's not that they aren't well-conceived or stunningly executed, it's just ultimately a case of more is less -- I found myself zoning out a few times and had to remind myself why this particular fight scene was happening.
The second, and I have a hard time believing I'm saying this, is that it may be a bit too dark. The long running time only serves to emphasize the limits of the grim and gritty take on Batman that fans have come to love, because while overlaying film noir sensibilities over the brooding gothic terrain of Gotham's underworld may seem a natural fit, at heart superhero comic books are not meant to be meditations on Nature of Evil or the Dark Side of Man. They are meant to be action-packed entertainment, and when the glum emo Batman overwhelms the cool crime-fighting Batman, this movie can be a bit of a slog. The previous Nolan "Batman Begins" got this balance right, but in "Dark Knight" the scales tip a bit too heavily to the side of pretentious and depressing.
That said, the principals here do a great job with their characters. Christian Bale remains spot-on portraying the dual vapid playboy/ grim avenging angel role of Bruce Wayne/ Batman, and Heath Ledger is everything the reviews say he is in his depiction of the Joker. His take on this iconic character is truly frightening, a sadistic sociopath who, at heart, just wants to "see the world burn."
It is a shame that a villain with such staying power should be denied screen time in the inevitable sequels due to the untimely demise of Mr. Ledger, because his Joker is one of the scariest comic villains to ever grace the silver screen.

Awesome! Golden statue for H.L.!(postumously) I could only wish that the other superhero movies would kick it up to this stature of movie!
(Kept hoping the Green Arrow, et al would have come in at the last minute to the rescue, though! It would have been a fantastic opportunity for the big boys to have made even more moola, as well as have millions begging for a JLA movie!)

The acting is amazing. Heath Ledger is beyond sensational. If he does not win an Oscar for his performance (and this is NOT a sympathy vote) then those folks in H-Wood are insane. Christian Bale is a perfect Batman / Bruce Wayne -- dark, brooding, intense (and cute to boot). Aaron Eckhardt does a great job with Harvey Dent. Michael Cane IS Alfred and Morgan Freeman is charming as always. Maggie G. is an acceptable Rachel, but she's never been a favorite of mine (sorry MG). I loved this movie from the start to the finish. It was gripping. The not-so-special effects (very little CGI) were AMAZING! The upturned semi is a once in a lifetime moment. Having said all this, I still come back to Heath Ledger. His performance is incredible. I would have paid 10 times the ticket price to see his portrayal of the evil, sociopathic Joker.

From the moment of the pencil being slammed into the table, it was clear this movie was going to be something special. Great ensemble acting by all. I was concerned about the hype regarding Heath Ledger's performance, but he was amazing. The film had a terrific story line, good special effects and story resolution. My only criticism is that I wish the film had been more tightly edited toward the end -- like 10-15 minutes shorter. I got the impression the filmmakers had invested so much in the crashes, explosions, etc., that they couldn't cut some of the superfluous footage out of the movie.

Best movie of last couple of years. Great script, performances, and set pieces. When you leave the theater what sticks with you is how the script was working on so many levels and not the action, which was also fantastic. Somewhat similar to the Departed, but just as good if not better. Should win Best Picture.

Very good but long. Just as it seems the movie is going to end, there's another 30 minutes with a new plot. And the joker's dialogue, previously crisp and evil, becomes long-winded and philosophical. I think they tried to fit in too much.
