The movie was so disjointed it was hard to keep up. It didn't have a concise storyline. None of the stories came together to form a complete movie. Keira did well acting and I enjoyed seeing James but it didn't save this movie. I am dumbfounded as to how this movie got so many nominations??? It was horrible. I am so glad I waited to see it on dvd and didn't waste my money at the theaters. It is not a keeper.

Just like an OREO cookie, this movie had substance at both sides... at the beginning and at the end. Great set up and ironic ending. Just like an OREO though, the entire middle was oversweetened gunk that was hard to swallow by anyone expecting good taste. Then comes the milk. This 30 minute story was milked into a 2 hour movie. This movie is best watched on a sofa with a good cup of coffee.

Based on the Ian McEwan bestseller of the same name, “Atonement” should not be mistaken as a romance. It is about the writer, not the lovers (from whom we are doubly removed). In maintaining that perspective, and re-enforcing it at the end, the film wasn’t the improvement it could have been. Yet “Atonement” is an achievement in fimmaking; the screenwriter, director, cinematographer, art director, and costume designer, have together painted a beautiful, accurate portrait of both the novel and the era in which it takes place. Unfortunately, portraits aren’t anything more than visual. “Atonement” is no exception. It climaxes early, and forgoes a great deal of plot in favour of ages of extended resolution. It is layered with more with sweeping scores – and ticking clocks – than with dialogue. And while the characters seem to do a lot of contemplating during their silences (we see strong performances from all the actors), they are too introverted to share much of their thoughts; the result is an overall aloofness about the picture that can lead us, too, to become detached.

Someone told me this movie was like the titanic of our time, i beg to differ. THere was very little action, and the chemistry between James and Keira seemed akward. It had a good story, just didn't deliever in the way i expected. I was waiting to be movied, but it never happened. The only thing i liked in the movie was the over all look of the film, and the authentic settings. OW and the ending, what a killer. So would i recomend this movie, sadly i would not. I wish i could because it really is a good story, its just too long, too slow, and forced acting kills the movie.

The first half of the Movie is absolutely Excellent, however as soon the war part start, the movie get very slow with violence pictures. Watch this movie if you enjoy slow drama romance of movies. Excellent acting .Have FUn :)

About the first 50 miutes to an hour of the movie was good, interesting, and enjoyable to watch. However, it went down from there. Violent scenes. The worst scene by my opinion came in the last 5 minutes.

Although this film is very well done the plot is slow to unfold. I thought I'd never learn what it was that had been witnessed. Would have been better if it was a little faster moving but the costumes, sets and acting was wonderful.

I have now seen all but one of the pictures up for best movie. I continue to be dissapointed.
This story has been told a thousand times. This was not nearly the best.
It is the typical, I have done wrong movie To call this movie "atonement" is to cheapen every movie like it where atonement is the moral of the story.
At least a story like this should be based on a true story. This would at least get the viewer to buy into the characters.
If you want real; atonement movies, I would HIGHLY recommend "Heaven Falls" . I also recommend Black Snake Moan, though it is not entirely along the lines of full atonement.
Both are on DVD now.
If you are intent on seeing all the best picture nominees, then by all means see it. It will certainly convince you that standards for best picture are probably different than what you would use.
