Can't recommend this movie. Key scenes are rip offs from in order, Apocalypse Now, Star Wars and Alien. Plot line is very thin, characters are one dimensional and I couldn't stop thinking about smurfs. Too much blue. Computer graphics were ok-no better than Gladiator- 3D helps. For its content, the movie is 40 minutes too long.

This movie is worth seeing just for it's graphics. 3D or IMAX highly recommended. If there were no visual effects, it wouldn't be worth seeing this film for it's story. Seen in many movies, story is a mixture of "Titanic" and "Rambo"-style (and some common human stupidity and idiotism-all mixed up just to "ruin" your experience). OK, for those who are young enough that haven't seen "Rambo" or missed movies where "whole population of one side would fight the whole population on another side-just because they don't have any brains", might not mind this type of the story. After all, it is "in the eye of the beholder" :)

Avatar has great special effects and well worth the extra cash to see in 3D. The Na'vi world they created is one that had a lot of interesting plot possibilities, BUT they opted for Dances With Wolves as a plot line with extreme violence thrown in. What could have been an all-time great movie was let down by boys-with-toys military hardware fetishism.

sprecial effects were fantasic as usual and the 3D was very good. Not the kind of 3D you might expect (like my husband) where things come flying out at you making you jump. but not the flat picture either. It was wonderful. This is by far the BEST movie I have seen in a long time!! Right down to the great visual affects of 3D to the story line. You feel like you are flying over Pandora with them. Other than the fact this is a fabulous, ground setting movie, it sets a standard for a new 3D venue. What I liked best in respect to the use of the 3D was that it was an enhancement to the story, a vehicle of cinematography. There were no frivolous, useless scenes that exploited the 3D just to wow the audience, like objects shooting out with no intention other than to shock & awe. The movie was a Wow all on it's own. Cameron's attention to detail was flawless. This is a "standalone" film that will launch blockbuster film makers into a new genre.

I think this movie is excellent, with its exceptional graphics and concepts deeply rooted in environment. The whole spectrum of new shapes of fauna and flora is an excellent medium of showing evolution at work. The science fiction motive, under which movie is sold, should be in my opinion little bit stronger. I greatly enjoyed the whole show.

I remember watching Star Wars when it first came out. I left the theatre in wonder. Leaving the imax theatre in 3D I was left with that same feeling. I did not care for parts of the story line....we killed our mother earth etc. I did enjoy the cutting edge graphics and adventure!!!

I tried for several days to see this movie and finally had to purchase tickets on line to secure my spot at the theater due to day after day sell outs. This movie more than lived up to its billing and all the pre-release buzz. I have no doubt there will be a sequel. I'd be disappointed if there wasn't one! I saw this movie in 3D and all I can say is awesome! The casting of Sigourney Weaver for this sort of movie, the beauty, the plot, the love, the saga, the science and the way it's wrapped up in the end. Whoever wrote this story (James Cameron) knows how to tell one. Thanks for sharing and keep writing. Can't wait until your next book/script/writing becomes a movie. :-)

This movie is dazzling as far as special effects and a tour de force of action and adventure. I really enjoyed the movie and wouldn't have missed it. However:
For dialog all he used was a computer to enter every hackneyed cliche about evil Americans against plucky natives. Very disappointed in the one dimensionality of the characters. All natives good, all humans, (except the hero, the token ethnic and the intellectuals of course) bad and greedy. 3 stars for this. This could have been a very great film, if he had bothered to make the characterization more nuanced.
Too bad the only movie cliche he missed was my favorite for dealing with recalcitrant aliens: "Let's nuke the planet from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." :-)

I wish my 3d glasses would have enabled me to become an avatar. Then I could have at least caught up on some sleep during this amorphous, simplistic mess. if you believe corporations and their ceo's are evil, and that the military would rather kill and blow up things before it tries to win hearts and minds and you like the bad guys to lose and love to conquer all story lines (all in 3d!) AND you like your movies looooong then by all means go
