The movie is worth seeing for the 3D and computer animation. The plot is what you would expect though, recycled from many other movies. It is Dances with Wolves meets Fern Gully. Also the characters are the only thing that don't make it into 3D. They all stick to their 1 dimensional motivations. After about 20 minutes into the movie you know how it will end and what each character will do.
All that aside though, I was in it for the visual effects and that didn't disappoint. See this movie in the theater. It will have very little to offer on DVD when it will be just another 2D alien action movie with a recycled plot.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Video games and violence -- not two of my favorite things, so I dismissed this movie as "not for me." UNTIL post-holiday party-talk turned from favorite books to current movies, and a colleague exclaimed, "If you like Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern,' you will *love* 'Avatar!'" Really?!?! Really. Avatar was an amazing experience. Now, James Cameron, please use your magic to bring me Pern!

Story line is haunting, poignant and timely, acting is superb....and the special effects are just amazing. This is probably a great film without the 3D experience, but it is literally "out of this world" with the 3D.
It will change the way we see movies, even at home, once the technology to the masses is figured out.
Appropriate for everyone, except young children that are easily frightened.
What is honor? What is right? What is a dream and what is reality?

What I have loved about James Cameron's movies in the past is that they feel absolutely real, gritty... you are instantly in the story, even if it's in a future you've never seen. This is a complete departure... it's a future fairy tale, lush, fantastic, visually stunning. The characters are simpler, and it's not so much about an intricate plot as it is about getting pulled into the adventure. VERY MILD SPOILER: I felt as though at first I didn't "buy in" to the world and the adventure as much, and then as the main character got sucked in more and more, I did too. I wonder if that was deliberately made to feel that way by Cameron, so that we experienced the same transformation that Jake Sully did?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If Dr. Grace Augustine, is supposed to be the most renowned expert in the life and ways of the Na'vis, (she wrote "the book" remember) then why would they come out of the incubation hut wearing belly shirts and street clothes?
It must have cost the earthlings trillions of dollars to develop the DNA sequencing and all the neuro science required to create the avatars in the first place... didn't Dr. Augustine have enough budget and attention to detail in her studies to create authentic-looking Na'vi loin cloths?
If you really wanted to go through all the trouble of BEING a Na'vi (tail and all), wouldn't you also want to go out wearing the thong and try to dress like one too?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was looking forward to this after all the hype, comparing it e.g. to Star Wars. But that film had very likable and interesting characters, lots of quotable lines, etc. The most likable character in Avatar is the bad guy. The others are blah. There are no great lines. The 3D is OK I guess. The film as a whole is on a par with Wall-E.

Enlightening and timely. Message laden for those with, or those who want, a higher awareness of how to live a life that supports the whole... nature, animals, and all of humanity!
Thanks James. Your epic film can inspire those ready to make shifts and changes in their lives. Changes that will be necessary to support all our survival as the planetary changes are happening every single day... look around and "see" them with more than your eyes!!

We watched it in 3D (not IMAX, though).
The movie is visually stunning, and a technical marvel: too bad Cameron ripped off the plot from Disney's Pocahontas. In retrospect, that make some sense because by halfway through I thought I was watching a Disney movie.
The plot developments are obvious, the characters are paper-thin, the acting is barely television-quality, and the "message" might as well have been written in neon. I haven't felt this preached at by a movie since "Wall-E" (and then I knew I was watching a kid's movie).
My message: go and enjoy the fireworks show, but don't expect to be awed. This is no "Lord of the Rings."

I suppose this movie was all about showing off the technology, because it sure wasn't about acting or writing or thinking. Even Sigourney Weaver, whom I typically adore, is wooden and stilted. But who wouldn't be with this funny-pages script to work with.
Lots of great biceps though.

This movie was seriously cool!!
Yup, the main conflict of the story has been done many times before and portrays the big, bad humans exploiting the weaker race once again.
But what do you expect for a 3D action move?
The premise of the story was done really well as far as humans controlling avatars. I loved the concepts in the alien world. And the effects were outstanding.
If you want a killer-good plot, don't go to see an action movie, period. But this story was better than most and the effects make it worth the trip.

The visual effects in this movie were stunning but I too am weary of the image of the west as the defilers and exploiters of other cultures/ races. It is disheartening to think that in a film portrayed in the future human beings have learned nothing from past arrogance and mistakes. I do get it that James Cameron is attempting to alert society's conscience that this must change. The movie starts off slow but builds in momentum. The alien's world is dangerous, but beautiful. I would not mind spending some time there myself; in the company of my alien hosts, of course. :) From the previews, it seems Hollywood has caught 3D fever; I fear that the public may quickly grow tired of something that was originally meant to be a novel experience.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
