beyond hallucinogenic,... i don't think it's really meant to be understood so much as it is meant to just be experienced. i really love this movie; it has changed my life. i agree with other reviewers that it's silly and not at all scary.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was not transported as others have reported. I was not transfixed either. I was largely entertained. In the duller stretches -- and there aren't many -- I would silently play "Where's Waldo?' -- I mean "Where's Brolin?"
The young lady is quite fine, but I was often keenly aware of her acting. To see a truly remarkable performance by a child, return to "The Piano" and marvel at Anna Paquin.
To say that I wasn't expetcing the gore is to reveal my lack of mental preparation for this film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I suppose this movie was all about showing off the technology, because it sure wasn't about acting or writing or thinking. Even Sigourney Weaver, whom I typically adore, is wooden and stilted. But who wouldn't be with this funny-pages script to work with.
Lots of great biceps though.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

All the shorts were skillful; some were far more engaging than others. The French/Japanese nominee, "La Maison du Petites Cubes" (pardon if my French isn't perfect) is haunting and lovely. The French one about the man who believed himself to exist 91 cm apart from himself was really profound and lovely to look at. The American entrants fare less well, relying heavily on Bugs Bunny-style slapstick and overly bright colors. I agree with the other reviewer, "Lavatory Love Story" was really sweet and understated.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Phony baloney

The entire movie had maybe 4 honest moments in it, none of them provided by Eastwood. The premise of the movie, its sodden plot, and its cardboard cutout characters combined to drag me down into the kind of stupor usually reserved for lectures like "The Life Cycle of the Inchworm." The character of the priest was especially egregiously written and acted. The whole project is phony and stilted.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
