The Imax 3D experience was breath taking. I felt that I was part of the picture. My son, his daughter and I were all overwhelmed by the detail. We became absorbed into the movie and became a part of it.

This movie was a great example of technology meets imagination. I was so hipnotized by the story and the graphics that I forgot it's mostly a 21st century cartoon. The 3D feature was amazing, way better then the old style: one blue lense and one red one. All in all I will recommend this movie to everyone.

but I have to say that I enjoyed this movie. The visuals were amazing! The story line... meh. A small spin on an old love story. The 3D is what made it "an experience." This is one of those movies that definitely is better in IMAX 3D!

Would recommend only because The 3D and other technology in this movie was amazing. But the gratuitous violence was getting extremely old. And why must the US be the bad guy all the time? Too much politics - typically disappointing James Cameron plot, however am sure it walk away with all the awards anyway. Can't we have some movies with substances and less noise?

I agree with many of the comments of other reviews. If you would like to have an interesting 3D experience, then go see this movie. But otherwise:
1) Yes, 3D glasses should wrap around eyes for better viewing. But thanks for trying......
2) Not much meaningful storyline. Typical shoot-em-up banter. Boring.
3) A near 3 hour time investment. 3 hours worth of typical shoot-em-up banter. Geese.
4) It does seem to be laced with agendas of various sorts throughout. What happened to just watching a good movie for entertainment?
4) For emphasis, read #3 again.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The effects are the star of this film. The narrative as it relates to the "evil" humans is too simplistic and lacks sufficient complexity to keep you interested in the story.

Outstanding CGI work. At times I would forget what's real and what's not. The story was somewhat predictable, but the non-stop action and visual effects kept me fully focused on the screen. For a long movie it didn't seem like it. You have to see it if you haven't.

Evil mining corporation trashing "virgin" rain forest in outer space. Evil mercenary Westerners using their might to exploit the land and trashing the Native people's utopia... these are fairly rote Hollywood lamentations. however predictable these themes might be, I thought the film had merit - though it be of the more pagan persuasion, the idea of a force greater than the self is worthwhile. The praise Gaia crowd no doubt will love this film... but what I liked was the promotion of life after death and sacrifice for something above and beyond ME, MYSELF, and I. I think that message is worthwhile. And a welcome change from the LA self-styled intelligentsia.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I thought there were copyright laws!
The premise of the film was lifted straight out of "Dances with Wolves". Same story, add-in 300 years and a dose of Halo and there it is. OK, we get it Hollywood, native Americans experienced genocide by Northern European immigrants settling the West.
The technical dimensions of the film - animation and graphics - were excellent.
This is hardly an epic film unless you believe 3 hours listening to a tired plot and predictable characters is epic. Perhaps the $500M to make the film could have been put to better use in the inner-city.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Before seeing this film, I heard it described as "The Smurfs" meets "Dances With Wolves" and it was pretty much that. I had no desire to see it but in fairness to the film, I cannot critique that which I have not seen. So I saw it. I can now tell my friends, "big deal." As stunning as the effects are, it's not a good enough story. I gave it two stars because it's not awful, it's just not great, really good, or even good. To all those raving about how this is the greatest movie they've ever seen, I highly recommend you watch "The Seven Samurai", "Casablanca", or "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - while my opinion, these are truly GREAT films and infinitely better than "Avatar."
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Riveting, moving, an endless feast for the eyes. The gulf between 'Toy Story' and 'Avatar' is enormous: now (human) emotion is being accurately and fully conveyed through animation. But the 3D glasses should wrap around: you have to move your head from time to time to capture the 3D-ness even if you're not close to the screen. What's next? Smell? In-theater climate effects?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Entering into this movie, I was expecting a cinematic feast. The vivid colors were extraordinary, but the plot was predictable and the 3D effects were subtle at best. We entered the theater at 7pm to emerge 3 hours later, weary and somewhat bored.
The unfortunate part of this is, this isn't a movie you can just wait to be released on DVD since the "experience" would be sorely lost. If you want to see it, go to the cinema, but relax your expectations so that it may be somewhat enjoyable.

A must see for it's revolutionary visual effcts, but a wholly empty and dissapointing movie overall. Unlike Titanic, which was also a silly movie, it was dfficult to make an emotional connection, and the love story fell flat. The scripty was silly and laughable. Also somewhat disgraceful to demonize American Marines. Considerng how long it took to make this movie you would think at least some thought could be put into making its political message a little clever, and making the script a little interesting.

Why exactly do we go to the movies? To see cool stuff? Nothing about acting, writing, character? Maybe a 3-D movie of stuff blowing up and car crashes would be a success. I suppose that the military getting theirs appeals to folks who like to watch shoot-‘em-ups with a vengeance theme, and coating the film in a veneer of environmentalism/anti-military industrial complex would appeal to another crowd. The actors are cartoons representing well-known stereotypes- the hard-bitten cynical Marine Colonial, the ivory-tower scientists, the amoral industrialist. Character development, one yardstick to judge acting chops? How about Jake switching from a tool of the US Military to a crusader for aboriginal rights in about, oh, three minutes?

Amazing movie! However, beyond the visual brilliance of it, I was primarily struck by the huge message here - we all need to do everything we can to preserve our planet! And the other big message for me was that we are all indeed connected to everything - flora, fauna & each other. A very moving film.

To me Avatar crossed the line that divides "a creation" and reality. There was no suspension of belief required to become immersed in Avatar's world.
I felt very at home with Avatar since old friends of mine in the form of Hayao Miyazaki's films showed their influence in the same manner that Akira Kurosawa's films have influenced George Lucas and many others.
If you liked Avatar and have not seen the works of Miyazaki indulge yourself with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind), Laputa: Castle in the Sky , and Princess Mononoke.
