Why exactly do we go to the movies? To see cool stuff? Nothing about acting, writing, character? Maybe a 3-D movie of stuff blowing up and car crashes would be a success. I suppose that the military getting theirs appeals to folks who like to watch shoot-‘em-ups with a vengeance theme, and coating the film in a veneer of environmentalism/anti-military industrial complex would appeal to another crowd. The actors are cartoons representing well-known stereotypes- the hard-bitten cynical Marine Colonial, the ivory-tower scientists, the amoral industrialist. Character development, one yardstick to judge acting chops? How about Jake switching from a tool of the US Military to a crusader for aboriginal rights in about, oh, three minutes?
