This movie is Cameron's attempt to challenge Hollywood. It almost feels like a double-dog-dareya.
There are three things in Avatar that stand out: the visual, the acting and the story. The visual is obvious. The visual, although sometimes horrible or terrifying were at the same time quite beautiful. The acting had moments. Sam Worthington did a subtle but solid job. This story, although not the most elegant, is a realistic story. Part of the brilliance is in the things Cameron did *not* directly point out in his story. He crafted an entire world and history as real as any other movie in recent history. Not sure who, but someone has a hand-sized shape on their cheek.

While the computer graphics were amazing, and well worth seeing a second time, the end of the story devolved into the same good guys/bad guys, high tech vs high heart and cunning, that has been seen on the screen way too many times. I was disappointed that for all the money that was spent, and the talent available to James Cameron, that something even slightly more original couldn't have been done. As a result, even though I left the film stunned by it's beauty, I couldn't help but feel the story was playing to the repeat customer's of the adolescent boy crowd.

James does it again.
The plot is a little predictable but this guy's ability to create a plausible new world (and the things running around in it) is simply stunning.
See it in 3D (tech has much improved over the last 3D experience several years ago).
Avatar doesn't quite "change the way we will view movies" as the promo stumps but it does set the bar quite a bit higher and was an excellent value for the entertainment coin.

This was an excellent movie. The plot, the emotional tones, acting, the CG, the whole thing came together as a really good story. The 3d was really cool, but I would have liked it just as much I think without it. One thing I think all movies could use when technology allows is a higher frame rate so that motion is more realistic and less blurred.

Okay, forget all the hype you have heard about this one. Yes it was one of the most expensive movies filmed etc etc. Get this, picture Lion King combined with Terminator and now you have this film. Great special effects and nice backdrops paint the picture of this predictable story of the good guy changing sides because he get a conscience and decides their is a worthier cause on the underdog side. Being a former Marine myself I did like all the jarhead influences and Stephen Lang plays a great tough Marine Colonel. Sam Worthington does a pretty good job with this one as he did with Terminator, but the story gets deep and they start singing chants and hugging trees and singing together and it loses you around hour 1.5.

I went to see this film with a large group of friends last night and every single one of us were simply blown away by it. The visuals were so realistic and so beautiful it was almost mind-numbing. Cameron has set a new standard in film cinematography with this one! It was unanimous, at least for all of us, that this film deserves the number one spot as, not only the best SF movie ever made, but surely one of the best movies of 2009.

The days of cheesy 3D are obviously gone, the effects were convincing without trying to be gimmicky, comfortable glasses and real depth. A great story, well written, minor sensuality and violence, but manageable for little kids. A little long, but for being 2.5 hours you barely notice it. Excellent.

Lets start with the fact that it is 2hrs and 40 minutes long. I still would go watch it again!! This was a visual treat. The colors and scenes were excellent. The 3D provided additional interest. The story was a bit predictable good vs. evil similar to the dark side of the force against the good. In some ways it reminded me of the Ewoks in Star Wars--primatives defeating the more advanced technology. I just hope the global warming alarmest don't try to link this to distruction of our planet rhetoric.

This is a terrific movie. It's hard to explain exactly why, except that the complete package of animation, 3D, and artistic design are just captivating. The 3D animated world is beautiful and enchanting, the action is realistic, and the acting is good enough for this genre.
The negatives: the plot is a bit predictable, and why does the savior have to be an earthling, and a white guy at that? As if the indigenous people are incapable of coming forth and doing it themselves.
All in all, though, I would not hesitate to recommend it. It is a wonderful experience, even at 2 hours, 40 minutes.

Technically and storywise, Avatar was the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was like watching Jurassic Park for the first time and being blown away by the adventure. Pros - Breath taking/mind blowing visuals, 3D quality was far beyond what I've seen done so far.
3D virtual world that was created was so beautiful that if you weren’t touched by it then you must be completely dead inside.
Cons: The story was predictable. However even so for me I didn’t care I was engrossed the entire time. I got to thinking about other movies that people consider great, like Titanic. Well you know the ship is going to sink in the end right? People still loved it. Same thing here.
I believe that this movie will eventually fall into a category with the greats such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.

James Cameron never promised a complex story line. He said the film would change movie making. He delivered..big time. Yes the plot was simple and we've seen essentially the same story before, but who cares. Sometimes it doesn't really matter if you can see what's coming next.. you still want ot see it. This was one of those films. Don't hate on the movie because the plot was simple. Appreciate the world Cameron created and the emotional connection he made with the audience.

Since its release at midnight on thursday Ive seen Avatar 3 times twice in 3d This movie is visually breathtaking the story while familiar is still very original The CGI Na'vi are incredible you totally believe they are real & not CGI characters. they have a realism & depth not usually found in CGI The Planet is (also CGI) incredible from the Thanators & the Icklan to the flowres & the trees. The details to the world was so captivating I want to hop on a shuttle & go. GO SEE This its Amazing bring a cpl a friends & prepair for an adventure

Strongly recommend this movie. Yes, the plot is the same as many others, esp. the 2007 animation movie 'Battle For Terra'. So, this is the most well done movie for that much rehashed plot. . The movie is otherwise stunning. The personalities are good and real. The Na'vi are awesome and VERY realistic. . 3D is just OK. You should watch this in an IMAX or just regular screens. . Strongly recommend this to everyone, including kids.

Ok so this is a fantasy/fairytale flick so the plot is not that great. But it's well worth the money for the visual effects (in 3D). It's not a movie, it's an experience.
