I found myself dozing off during the middle of the film, they could have cut 10 t0 20 minutes and not hurt the story line. The best thing about the film is the excellent effects.. 3D was nice but not overwhelming in its importance. If it wasn't for the effects I would rate it a 3 star. All in All though it was a nice way to spend a Saturday AM and I'm sure I'll get the DVD and see what I think then.

Its rare to find movies in the Hollywood big budget arena with heart, deep character development combined with eye popping special effects and unsurpassed action. Avatar incorporates all of these characteristics. Special effects is a tool that is often abused by movie makers at the expense of good storytelling, resulting in lots of "boom" but no substance. This may be the first movie I've seen where the special effects were a valuable tool in telling the story and not overwhelming like the THX intros in many films. . If you can see this in 3D, DO IT! If you can't, see the movie anyway. Its too good to miss

3D video effects were so real that you loose sense of reality. One thing you cannot do is reach out and touch objects but you'd want to. The amount of CGI work is unbelievable and its quality was never any higher. There is enough of everything: SciFi, love, betrayal, revenge, heroism, melodrama, incredible scenery, anything that you'd ever want in a movie, all wrapped in one beautiful 2h40min package which you'd regret to see end. My wife and I didn't want to leave, we wanted more of this magic. The closing scene with humans leaving the planet was definitely naive since humans would never leave or abandon their source of riches and loose an investment. But it had to be this way to have a happy ending and leave room for a possible sequel.

The movie is absolutely gorgeous and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The motion capture characters are, for the first time in any movie I've seen, believable and thoroughly lifelike. They have inertia and a sense of "heft" when they move. They even emote like good live actors do.
However...Well, it's a lot like Titanic in that the storyline is simplistic and heavy handed. I don't need to be hit over the head with obvious Native-American references (language, theology, appearance, etc.). Nor do I need to be reminded that the environment needs to be protected, mkay? I get it Mr. Cameron...I get it! Also, expect every Cameron cliche you've ever seen.
But that said, it's decidedly worth your time and paycheck to go see it in the theater.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. The effects were flawless. Plot somewhat predictable, you've seen variations on this theme (think Dances w/Wolves, etc) but still a great story. So great that you don't even realize the 2:40 has went by, even if you're a smoker! Couldn't take my eyes off the screen. WOW!

My 14 year old son loved it. I enjoyed 3D effects but it dragged and plot/dialogue was thin. The pro-environmentalism anti-military themes were so cliche it was almost silly and I'm very liberal.

James Cameron obviously spent a great deal of time planning and designing the world of Avatar, and it pays off. The wonderful, unobtrusive 3D allows you to see the incredible amount of detail inserted into every frame. The story is somewhat simple, but the movie is entertaining and definitely the benchmark in movie-making it was made out to be. It's nice to see Sigourney Weaver back on screen, too. Definitely recommended (in 3D if possible).

Avatar (seen in 3D) was truly an excellent movie with only 2 minor issues.. 1.) The trailer didn't do the movie justice 2.) It was a bit long.

This fantasy movie truly has everything in it you would want! Beautiful and creative scenery, lovable characters, excellent plot, believable acting, love, heartache, drama, great music, and just about everything else you can think of (without being overdone)!
Definately a movie NOT to miss at the theatres (I will go and see it again) and one I will buy on BluRay the day it comes out!

this movie will change movies just like Star Wars did more than 20 years ago, Cameron outdid Lucas, better story, incredible visuals, for almost 3 hours no one in the movie theater moved from their seats, everyone was glued to the screen mouths wide open. This was a really interesting preface for a movie. It was implemented really well, without the typical lack of plot for special effects or visa versa. It was exciting, new, wonderfully visual, and very sci-fi. There was plenty of action to keep my 2 boys glued to their seats, and a hint of love interest. It had a little for everyone and a little twist to the standard, save the planet films, though not that much of one. And, while not wholly unpredictable, it was charming, colorful and full of action and not quite typical, of any one genre. It was very entertaining and I will be watching it again.

I loved this movie. James Cameron deserves loads of praise from this masterpiece. I appreciated the attention to detail, making every dot connect. Family/Friends to go see this movie last night and it was awesome! It was very obvious why this was the most expensive movies ever made. The 3-D effects were done incredibly well and the story was really good too. Though not original it was presented in a very beautiful way. It's great to know that after all these years Cameron has definitely not lost his touch. I recommend that you turn your computer off NOW and go to see it right away!

This was an exciting movie with very few slow moments, which makes it hard to time a bathroom break! The 3-D was well incorporated, and stunning to look at. The storyline was interesting and enjoyable. Well worth the price to see on the big screen.
