Amazing special effects, good storyline overall value is 100% of your ticket price.
Only qualm, Unobtainium. Who in their right mind thought giving the most valuable object of their affection was named after a buzzword I learned in High School Economics class. How difficult would it have been to actually think of a cool name? Next time, call the pharmaceutical folks - they always know how to come up with a name for a new product. It has been 24 hours since seeing this masterpiece, the movie lingers but that stupid phrase puts a clinker in the memory.

I had heard all the hype about how great this movie was - the huge budget, the great special effects - and i went in thinking there was no way it could meet expectations. I was wrong. The movie was fantastic. It had some of the best special effects i've seen and the plot was beautifully written. It is definitely a movie you'll want to see in 3D. Because of all the pre-release publicity about the special effects, I expected those to be anticlimactic. They're not. You'll be riveted to your seat. The effects and photography are stunning, raising the bar and striking fear into the hearts of animators all over the business.
The story is another story. Nothing special and completely predictable. Cardboard characters. Disappointing dialogue. The animated characters are almost more interesting than the human ones. One-dimensional, almost goofy villains. Childish characterizations.
But you weren't looking for literature, right? It's basically just great fun. An E-ticket ride. Definitely worth your time.

This was a beautiful movie to watch, but don't buy the hype. It's not mind blowing or awesome. It was worth the $ for one viewing, and that's it. I wouldn't even say that 3D is necessary, although that adds something to the experience. The plot and characters, even the aliens, are same ol' same ol'. Still, like I say, it was beautiful to watch (I like blue!). The fantasy world was pretty and beautifully drawn or engineered or whatever it was. I enjoyed it. Glad I saw it at theater instead of home. But I wouldn't pay to see it twice.

This movie was a visual phenomenon. I sometimes forgot I was wearing 3D glasses, (although I got a bit of a headache). The colors and effects were fantastic. I thought the story line was a bit predictable, but I am very happy I deided to see it in the IMAX 3D. If this is the way movies are going to be filmed going forwaard, lucky us. I can picture the next Dark Knight like this.....

The story was really interesting to me. The CG was totally realistic...I didn't expect that much detail at all, everything looked so real. Wonderful job! If you are concerned about language, I thought it was pretty harsh, they could have cut a lot of that out, I was dissapointed at how far they took it. I actually got sick seeing it in 3D, it may have been where I was seated (2nd row right). So be careful if you get motion sickness. Overall, the movie was a hit w/me.

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I haven't enjoyed a movie experience like this in years. Saw this on rotten tomatoes and thought it was a perfect summary: "What Avatar does best of all is immerse the viewer in this alien world until it seems like home." The good: This movie is beautiful. The acting was pretty good, too, even if some of the dialogue was kind of cheesy.
The bad: After all that work on appearance, the plot was phoned in. There are no surprises here. None. Every one of Chekhov's guns goes off exactly the way you'd predict.
Other people have commented on the implicit racism of having the white guy come to be the leader of the differently-colored natives and on the two-dimensional (at best) military/industrial villainy; I attribute both of these more to laziness on Cameron's part.
That said, it was still worth the money, and I'd recommend it. Just don't expect to be surprised.

Avatar is a movie you should NOT GO SEE... once. Avatar is a movie you should go see multiple times in 3D.
The first time you go see it, you should enjoy the world, story, and characters Cameron has brought to life. The second time you go see it, play the role of a voyeur on the planet of Pandora, and appreciate all the little effects you might have missed the first time.
If anyone tells you this movie is bad, they either had a horrible childhood, have no imagination, or are simply jumping on the bandwagon of people who want to be different so they don't like the movie and have nothing to back it up with.

My husband and I saw the 3-D version and the effects were so innovative and stunning that we kept gasping. What an amazing world James Cameron has created in Pandora! We would give the movie five stars if the plot and dialogue weren't so predictable and lame. In a project of this scope, surely Cameron could have done better than those cartoonish corporate/military villains. Did he really have to preach so hard about saving the environment? His vision makes the point by itself.

James Cameron delivers a high-quality cinematic experience once again, with nods to earlier films, such as Aliens and True Lies. He even cast Sigourney "Ripley" Weaver of Alien fame, and a couple of actors who had died in the Fast & the Furious series.
Look out for not-so-subtle references to Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. An excellent film that rolls out in 3 parts: the intro, the setup, and the finale.

Once you get over the memory of "Dances With Wolves," (essentially the same story, with the same emotional intensity and character values), this is a technically creative, well-acted, gripper of a film. We've come a long way since "Star Wars" and it's all here. Effects have a kind of perfection that's fun but sometimes distracting. Overall, I wouldn't have missed it, it was worth the 3 hours. As effects-driven films go it gets an A in my book. (The "something blue" is the color of the Pandorans.)

Melvillian good vs. evil. The simplistic colonel, supervisor and hive of humans clash with Pandora's complexity. That's the plot and the audience's problem. "Avatar" creates another world for Cameron to be king of. Pandora, and the 8-foot tall blue Neytiri, are breathtaking beauties. Viewers can interpret the plot any way they want since allegory sprouts more extravagently than the planet's ripe life. Ultimately Avatar remains Earth-bound by the presumption that acquisition is the ultimate goal. The Na'vi with the nicest banshee gets the girl.

Just like The Matrix is what helped push DVD over the top, this movie will be the catalyst to getting 3D video systems in the home.
It was fantastic. Watching it in 3D made you feel like you were there. During the jungle scenes the floating seeds and flying bugs were done superbly but not overdone.

Avatar is definitely the best movie I've seen all year. The picture is so amazing, full of action, intensity that 2 hrs. 40 min was not enough. I enjoyed the 3D movie as much as my 12 yr old.

Awesome, to say the very least. The special effects are flawless, there is never a "bad" or "slow" part of the movie, even if it is nearly three hours. I enjoyed every bit of it.
