Overall the special effects are out of this world, the acting was acceptable (Sigourney Weaver was great!), the plot a litle predictible. The 3D technology was just was I expected, but the creation of PANDORA was incredible.

I saw the story as a retelling of the plight of the American Indian against the white man combined with Braveheart and Star Wars. It was an exciting movie and the 3D effects were fun, but I don't see this as a movie you'll want to watch over and over.

not a good movie, predictable plot, cheesy acting/voices: good guys are natives, bad guys are capitalist pigs. this is like dances with wolves in sci-fi. i really didn't like the "worship mother earth" aspect; "if we all love one another and believe the dirt is a magical spirit, then we'll all get along..." special effects good, but not enough to justify the price of a ticket.

This was one of the best movie experiences of my life.
The 3D is amazing, not over done, but really puts you in the action.
The plot has been done before, but it wasn't completely and totally predictable in the end.
I have seen two (adult) movies in a theatre in the past four years because I generally don't think movies are worth the time and money, but I would see this one in theatres again.

I went to this movie with my son and we thought it was one of the best movies we've seen in the last 5 years. I would also recommend watching it in 3D, because it added some extra feelings to it. The plot is great, but we were more impressed by life-like creatures and amazing graphics utilized in this movie. I would strongly recommend watching it to all regular movie-goers. I always wait for new JC movies (James Cameron) and I think he lived up to our expectations!!! Great job JC!!!

Great animation with innovative use of 3D however the story is rather thin and the message conveyed silly: fight violence with violence and even if the invader has better technology if you are man enough and willing, you will succeed - how inspiring. It's never good when directors are story writers as well. Didn't work well for David Lynch either.

This movie is worth seeing because it represents the future of movie technology. Visually, it is a stunning movie and should be watched in 3-D. However, the plot was borrowed from multiple movies, including, “Dances with Wolves”, “Aliens”, “Terminator 2”, “The Abyss”, and Disney’s “Pocahontas”. James Cameron was so preoccupied with the details of the plants, animals, and aliens; he forgot to write an engaging story. The story is a bland tale of evil greedy humans vs. the peaceful low tech natives. The bad corporate and military guys are a cliché and it is tough to hate them, because you know their fate 5 minutes into the movie and you don’t care about them.

This is hands-down the the most technically awesome feature length 3D film yet released. As someone living in 2009/2010, you have a responsibility to see this movie while it's in the theaters so that you can tell your descendants that you saw firsthand the movie that changed 3D from a gimmicky novelty to an integral part of the movie viewing experience. I've seen the film in both IMAX 3D and Real3D on a standard movie screen, and I'd definitely recommend getting the IMAX experience. Also, when 3D bluray comes out, Avatar will be my first purchase. Truly amazing. (By the way, the plot itself is recycled from a number of previous stories, I still found it enjoyable and interesting.)

I would rate a little over 4 stars. The St Pete Times review lamented that although plenty of action, there was no discernable plot. I would disagree with the latter point. The plot may have been a bit simple, but it was certainly there. The special effects were very good, though I admit that with all the hype I was expecting a little more from the 3D technology.

Yes, the story is tired and weak. Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, or "Fern Gully on steroids", are all reasonable comparisons. There is even some recycled material from the Aliens series,
However, none of that matters when the lights dim. The immersive 3D places you inside this beautiful fantasy world in a way that 2D cannot. Other 3D movies use the medium as a gimmick, a way to startle the audience with things flying out of the screen. Cameron folds the technology neatly into the whole visual package in a way that enhances the movie, not just showcases the technology.
Go see it. If you leave your expectations about story home, and leave your mind open to a new world, you will enjoy it.

This is a great movie, even for couples. A lot of action. The different scenes were wonderful. Sort of like a Sci-Fi Love story for me. Touches your emotions, enjoyed the 3-D, perfect for families. Overall, the movie was greast and I recommend all to go see it.

This is a cowboys and Indians movie with great graphics. Poor story and acting but technologically a great effort. Our glasses did not work but the visual part was very nice anyway.
James Cameron used this movie to preach about how mean and greedy Republicans are and how they will ruin the earth.

Fabulous color, action and best movie ever made at this point.
However, very disapointed in the previews. Very upsetting and Violent, I wnet to see a matina many small kids were around and the previews were so loud and rediculaously violent I had to look away. Plesae keep the previews less violent and scary,

While the plotline was predictable, the execution of that plot line was not. My initial perceptions was I would be dealing with CGI similar to those used in the "Final Fantasy" film, but was quickly surprised that they were much better. I lost my pre-concieved notions and saw the images as real people and not CGI. I also questioned whether the war-mongering Colonel was real or CGI. Avatar will clearly take on two maybe three Oscars, but may lose the "Original Screenplay" oscar to "The Blind Side." Hollywood has ignored CGI actors and actresses in the past (Eddie Murphy and Ellen DeGeneres), but Zoe Saldana did an excellent job even though we saw only her eyes and mouth, her personality came through.
