The plot has been done dozens of times before and the story is extremely predictable, but that doesn't detract from what is otherwise a great film. In the tradition that Star Wars borrows heavily from traditional myths, so does Avatar borrow from current/historical events and many other films to create a satisfying film.
Beautiful voice acting and animation on every character and creature with the exception of Sigourney Weaver's Avatar which is just too uncanny-valley. Otherwise, exceptional work. You forget they aren't real at times. Protagonists were great, antagonists however were very flat.

This movie was amazing. I saw it in 3D and really liked the effect it created. It wasn't the cheesy kind where it just threw stuff at you, either. It helped create a sense of scale. The CGI was mind-blowing, and the fact that it well-mixed all the genres of movies together was a big plus. Five stars. You should see this.

A visual feast, Avatar suffers from a story line we've seen before, and an indulgence in SFX that pads the film by 15-20 minutes. The 3D was a delight, character development and portrayals were strong, and Avatar was fun to watch. But I did glance at my watch a couple of times (not a good sign), and I kept hoping (in vain, as it turned out) for an unexpected plot twist.
The 3D ought to put a lot of butts in seats, and the film deserves its accolades for use of SFX. The sci-fi is entertaining (Orson Scott Card came to mind as I watched Cameron's film), but nothing new. And the same essential story is featured in many films (e.g., "Dances with Wolves" & "Local Hero").

An orgiastic feast for the eyes. This film certainly lives up to its hype, in that regard. Somewhat lacking in the realm of plot ingenuity and character development (essentially Dances With Wolves- in space) but definitely worth the price of admission for sheer entertainment. I wouldn't recommend seeing it any other way than IMAX 3D.

After seeing this movie with my family, my grandfather looked over at me (I had invited him last minute) and told me that Avatar 3D was the best movie experience he'd ever had. He is a movie buff in his 70s, and he was like a giddy child. This movie transports you to where movies should, a world of fantasy, excitement, and sheer awe. James Cameron created an entire world, an eco-system of flora and fauna beyond anything the average Joe could comprehend, a culture and language more beautiful than anything we've seen in a long time. The 1-star voters missed an important point. This wasn't the military. They were mercenaries, people! Nobody was wishing for the military to be defeated. We (tree-huggers like me) were rooting for a more holistic perspective of a new world to win over plain old fashioned, short-sighted greed. Besides that, the characters were compelling, the fantasy flora and fauna were spectacular and the hero and heroine were SEXY! What a great movie. I am headed back today to see it for a 4th time. I don't like Cameron, but he does make a gooood movie. (It's odd that he creates such strong women characters but doesn't treat them very well in real life...)

James Cameron has done it again, by creating a visually spectacular and exciting tale, using his own brand of special F/X. I am not a fan of 3D movies, but Cameron's use of the 3D was subtle and unobtrusive; it did not detract from my focus on the movie. The beauty of Pandora was always noticable, without distracting from the action and the story taking place. This is a must-see on the big screen, so that you can be completely sucked in . The only weakness is the dialogue, but that is typical in Cameron's films. But, let's face it...talking is not the main focus of Avatar. It's the action and knowing that, this movie is excellent!

This is going to be one of the movie icons in history, like Jaws or Star Wars, Titanic. You do not want to miss this on the big screen in 3D. The story line is great, the CG is amazing, and I left wanting more; having seen it twice now and each time ending with the audience clapping is a sign to me this is a movie worth passing on to others.
I have seen this now in an IMAX and RealD theaters and must say the IMAX should be the only way you see this movie. Visually both are equal in my eyes but the IMAX has much better sound quality and a larger screen and when combined pull you into the story much more so than the RealD will.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Avatar is a great movie to watch in 3D -- make sure you do, as the movie itself is just so-so. The plot is totally predictable and the whole ecology / Mother Nature theme is so lame (the trees communicate with each other through their roots -- yeah, right !!). But the 3D is awesome and pulls you right into the movie. So 4 stars due to the 3D -- only 3 stars if you go to see it in 2D.
