The premise of the movie is really interesting. Us Indians like a good complicated story with sibling rivalry and warring cousins. A wise elders' arm twisting ways and women with a history just make things juicier. Prakash Jha got all of it right. But he seemed like he was in a hurry to finish off the movie. It started so well in a narrative format, but ended in a literal bloody mess. And it was such a shame. As with such winning performances by Nana and Ranbir he should have put in more effort towards it. Gangajal will still be deemed as his best.

Firstly, Thanks a Dozen to Prakash Jha for making a non-commercial movie..
The Movie is about a Family owned Government (which is worse than Privatization), saying so you can imagine the role of Police Department and other Government Officials. There are lot of 'You can see only in Movies' shots, which will make audience feel boring..
Other than that, A definitely One Time watcher movie for movie lovers.. A daring move on depicting the way Politics is handled in India.. Screenplay was good in the First Half and was dragged with too many scenes in the second half..
BGM could've been better.. I completely hate the Vande Mataram song running in Back Ground for the inappropriate things happening on Screen.. There is only one short song in the movie, which does not create big impact.. Music just 2/5..

If you can stomach the hypocrisy and shameless exploitation of political power for personal gain that is at the heart of this story, it's a pretty good film. Devgan Patekar and Rampal all do a great acting job. Fair warning: it's a pretty complicated story so pay attention from the very start!!

This was a great movie. The directors has maintained audience's attention all throughout the movie. The language could have been a little simpler. The star cast did a great job. Ranbir's was looking very handsome and did a good job.

I struggled to give this a 4-star but I thought it was better than a 3-star. I wouldn't recommend this movie to a really close friend but all you others can go watch it.
Like others have mentioned, the families were structured like Mahabharata and some characters were loosely similar but in my mind it was closer to the movie Godfather. There was ruthless ripping off of Godfather characters and scenes right from the main character Samar (aka Michael Corleone) to his pregnant girlfriend (Michael's wife in Godfather) to his elder brother (remember the toll booth scene in Godfather?). Also, the movie was looonnggg inspite of having only one real song sequence.
That being said, the acting was outstanding by all the artists. It's hard to name the "best actor" award in this movie coz everyone played their part to perfection. Kudos to Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Katrina Kaif who in my mind were the least "seasoned" actors in the movie. You always expect awesome performances from Manoj Bhajpai and Nana Patekar and they didn't disappoint. Even Sarah Thompson played her role very very well.
For what its worth, if you do go to watch this, pay a visit to the mens (or ladies) room, buy some popcorn and a coke before you go in.

We all have heard the term politics is dirty, just how dirty this movie will tell it all. It is ruthless. Acting ---- great acting by all. Surprisingly Katrina Kaif has shown that she can do some serious acting when demanded, she is not perfect but has definitely added some justice to her role. As for the remaining star cast, well they are all champs long time ago. Enjoyed watching the it.
Story line --- The writer(s) have made researched well. Although no direct references are made to particular party, it is obvious which political party is suggested. Watch the movie to find the answer. The storyline keeps the momentum heightened and very nicely blends the elements of cunning, strategy, ruthlessness, and family ties. It is truly captivating to say the least.
Direction --- phenomenal. The direction stays with the characters and story. No nonsense approach kept the movie lively and gripping. WELL DONE. BRAVO. No songs it is the jewel in the crown.
Overall -- 5 stars. Soul refreshing. Enjoyed watching a hindi movie in theater after a long time. Would watch it again if needed.Worth every penny.

I went to this movie with simple expectations. I just wanted a few scenes that had a smart screenplay and/or a powerful (energetic) performance. What I got was way better than that. It helped 'Raajneeti' by smartly adapting the script from two of the classics- Mahabharata and The GodFather, but it was so easy to screw up on this front. The output instead was something close to perfection and I bow to Prakash Zha for this.
Thank you Mr. Zha for taking real effort in writing the script. I was particularly impressed that you named your characters smartly like 'Brij Mohan' and 'Bhaskar Sanyal' to show that you had nothing to hide. I hope others take inspiration from you so that Bollywood can come out of mediocrity where it is in.
On performance side, I think everybody did a fabulous job. It is difficult to pick one above the other as all of them shined on the screen with audience left wanting to see more. I was particularly happy to see Manoj Bajpai getting back in form with a role that did justice to his talent.
The direction, cinematography, editing and all the technical elements were top class.
Guys, we have a winner! Please go and watch it.
Warning: It is clearly an adult movie. Please, don't take your kids. This one has violence.

It has been a while since I have seen a decent indian movie and so I was surprised when this movie turned out to be one of the most amazing Indian movies I have seen.
Ranbir Kapoor steals the show and Nana Patekar is amazing as always. Katrina Kaif has also done a very good job.

This movie would be a one time watch and for some maybe 2 times. 2 times not because this is awesomely good movie, but because you will have to catch up with the characters and their relations with each other. If you have watched Sarkar and Sarkar Raj, this movie is exactly in line with those movies where politics is concerned. This has a little more family involved in politics. Best part of the movie is, that it keeps you glued because of the unexpected twist in the movie as one tries to overpower the other. There is no good movie available right now and this movie is recommended for anybody who knows politics a little. But I would say this movie has nothing new or creative happening in there. The star cast is good, and done enough justice to their characters. Over all a 1 time must watch, since this is all , but better, you have available right now.

It was a nice try by the movie makers and it turned well until the last 30 minutes when the movie became predictable. Samar's mother's role should have been a better actress. The script tried to copy Mahabharata and it did well To an extent by having some very strong moments but the last 30 minutes were weak and to some extent predictable. Overall a one time watch, not worth going again.

I had been waiting for this movie for long.. It lived up to the expectations.. a very well crafted movie with properly chosen star cast... Jha has done some good movies in the past.. and has proved it once again.. Its unlike the other bollywood masala movies.. Power, sacrifice, corruption, Politics, Gameplay.. this movie has it all.. Was good to see Ranbir break out of his boyish image and take up this role which demanded a character undetered by the outlashes of life.. well done Ranbir!!

This is a story about Indian politics,about Indian democracy and Indian elections. Acting wise Manoj Bajpai/Ranbir Kapoor were the best....Ajay was good but wasted with less screen space...Arjun Rampal was average....first half is fast paced and interesting whereas second half gets too melodramatic....too filmy....especially the scene where Nana Patekar comes to meet Devgan and his family at his home...overall a decent attempt...could have been shrinked to 2 hrs 30 mins...

excited to see a movie with complete stretch of politics. Movie is good. Ranbir is awesome ....katrina..i dont know ...she doesnt suit for that role. not used nasiruddin shah well. Prithvi charecter is perferct. And going into the movie, sets, presentation is beautiful. No words to explain. And the courage of the director to work on this film..appreciated. But he would have worked more on dialogs. That would be sharpening the movie. Finally a worth watching movie and good.

All actors have acted well and movie is scripted well. Seems mostly realistic, except at some place the hindi masala movie takes over. Awesome sets, very nice photography and sound recording was also very good. Some gory bloody were a little too much, very less songs (only in background for a minute) were welcome and duration could be shorted but overall enjoyed it.
