When I left the theater, I kept thinking of Eastwood's directorial debut (I think), "Forgiven." The story was great - really compelling subject matter - but so poorly told that I struggled to stay engaged. That's how I felt about "Hereafter." Loved the story, didn't love the storytelling, which felt like it dragged endlessly (a few people actually left the theater midway through the movie, which I've never seen before!) and wasn't cohesive. Since it's a story about 3 separate individuals, I wanted to understand the relevance of one scene after another even if the scenes were about different people, and it just wasn't always clear (maybe I'm slow!). I understand why so many people liked the movie and agree the topic was fabulous. Just wish he'd told the story more effectively and made it worth the $11 tickets!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

If you can stomach the hypocrisy and shameless exploitation of political power for personal gain that is at the heart of this story, it's a pretty good film. Devgan Patekar and Rampal all do a great acting job. Fair warning: it's a pretty complicated story so pay attention from the very start!!
