If you're looking for an inventive plot, or ground breaking animation look elsewhere. If you're looking for a solid family movie which will entertain those of all ages that looks great in 3D this is the place!
How to train your Dragon delivers good family fun. There is only a hint of preachy-ness when it comes to tolerance but it never becomes too heavy handed (looking at you Wall-E & Avatar).
If you see it in 3D I promise you won't be disappointed.

I have to say, I was more than a bit surprised to find how excited I was to see this movie! This was our first family outing in IMAX 3D (I took my son and his two daughters (my granddaughters). I found the theater (stadium seating) to be extremely comfortable. The room itself was small but more than adequate and the screen was all consuming in the room! The movie graphics almost overwhelmed me with emotion ; but, I was totally thrilled by the outstanding IMAX 3D graphics! I am in the 45-50 yr old bracket and knowing it was just a movie, still found myself dodging items and reaching out to touch things with my youngest granddaughter - they looked to be right next to us! It was truly amazing! As for the movie itself, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I felt it had a wonderful story line that was not hard to follow and the characters were so believable. I thought I was going to just another kids cartoon movie but soon became very involved with the characters and the plot. I almost forgot it was a cartoon! I would definitely recommend this to everyone and wouldn't mind seeing it again myself! My granddaughters (9 & 6) both want a pet dragon now!...maybe I do too! Absolutely loved this movie! Can't wait to experience another IMAX 3D movie! Only downside was that they only had adult 3D glasses which fit over my glasses rather comfortably but were rather large on my 6yr old granddaughter (wished they had smaller ones that fit her face more properly (not sure if it affected how she viewed the 3D images or not).

Theres a reason that this is the smartest, best written and cutest kid's film since Lilo and Stitch, its made by the same creative team. Not only is it a great kids movie but its wonderful for adults too. I spent the big money to see it in 3D imax and it was the most enjoyable 3D experience so far. Better than Avatar because this has an original story. I've seen some complaints that it is predictable but that's only because you know most kids stories have a happy ending. The main character is lovable and his Dragon even more so. Even I want a Toothless plush toy and i'm over 30. Great movie for all ages except maybe the below four set - it has some scary moments that a small child could be frightened of but that anyone who can understand language would probably just find exciting!

This is a unique story, well scripted and highly engaging for all ages. The IMAX 3D version is undeniable exhilarating and fun. My daughter and I loved it and felt we needed to share the experience with her dad, so we went twice! I would go again if I had visitors or another child to entertain.

A wonderfully entertaining movie with a great story and message. We took our nearly 5 year old girl. She did great and really enjoyed it. She is quite mature for her age and we were a little concerned. The fight scenes were somewhat scary, but not gratuitous at all. The filmmakers clearly took great pains to get this movie to appeal as far down as they could. Highly recommended.

Absolutely lovely movie! Brilliant 3D experience! Went with my friend and our 4 year old girls! They loved every bit of it! I admit even I jumped up in my seat when the big dragon in the cave first appeared but my child still didn't let me cover her eyes! Our girls kept talking about it after discussing what their favorite dragons were! So if your child isn't extremely jumpy this film is ok for preschoolers too!

I saw this with my husband and 12 year old son. We all enjoyed the entire movie. I think that preschool children would probably be scared at some points in the movie but older children wouldn't. I'm happy that there wasn't any bad language or innuendo that some movies throw in for adults. I would recommend this to families with elementary age & up children and also adults who want to see a good movie.

I highly recommend this movie. It was well made and captivating. The kids I took loved it and sat through the entire movie (very rare occurrence). it was entertaining for adults too.

Very, very well done, great for kids, but not a 5-star because I'm comparing it to the greats like Monsters Inc. Worth seeing.
