James Cameron didn't rely solely on special effects to make Avatar work: he wrote a movie with a decent plot and enhanced it with the 3-D special effects.
Visually, this movie is gorgeous. It's definitely worth the price of admission to see this on the big IMAX screen. You truly feel immersed in this other world.
Story-wise, it was sound, if not thrilling, but that's way better than most big budget movies these days!
Hopefully this will start the trend of filmmakers remembering that ultimately, it's about the STORY. Use CGI and special effects to ENHANCE the story.
If Hollywood starts combining great stories with special effects, it'll be worthwhile to go to the movies again.

One of the most beautiful movies ever as far as colors and scenery go. What an amazing world that was created. Colors we are not used to seeing and a world that is beyond beautiful. It's a little predictable, but I still enjoyed the ride. Amazing on IMAX and in 3D. Great action, but you really do believe this world exist and these people are real. Nice job Mr. Cameron

The story is slightly hoaky, but the experience of seeing this in 3D in a digital IMAX theater made it well worth the $10 I paid to get in. In fact, this movie is almost like going on a sight-seeing tour, the visuals are breathtaking, and the resolution + attention to detail are stunning. Cameron may be an sphincter to work for, but boy oh boy does he get results. I plan on going again within the next couple of days, and I have NEVER done that for any movie before. I know Hollywood was looking for a way to differentiate it's products from the home theater, and holy carp, this is it. If this is what's going to start coming out of hollywood, I'll actually start paying to see movies in the theater again.

Predictable plot but I knew I was experiencing something that would change movies the same way the Matrix did. Do not see this movie unless you can experience it in IMAX 3D. Anything else is just cheating yourself.

This is one the best movies I have seen in a long time. Awesome 3D effects that had me dodging things and I couldn’t tell what was real or what was CGI. I seen it in IMAX 3D which also made it even more fun to watch and it was like you were there in the movie. I HIGHLY recommend this movie. James Cameron has made another great movie. I liked the story and made really cheer for the natives in the movie. Go see it while it is in 3D, you will be sorry you didn’t.

There has been a lot of talk about how this movie doesn't really have anything new. It's just like Dances with Wolves in story, Titanic in Music, etc. That's pretty much true.
However, it is one of the most immersive experiences ever to go through the theaters. If the devil is in the details, this film got a shockingly high number of them covered. It pays off in a big way.
This movie creates an entire world. When you see it, you can visit this new place for almost three hours. It's terrific.

Avatar was quite possibly the best movie we have ever seen. There was nothing this movie missed. It had action, incredible graphics, beautiful scenery, fantastic character developement and interaction, romance, special effects and a powerrfu story line! Everything looked incredibly real. We saw the movie in Imax-3D which added to the experience. This is absolutely a "Must see" movie!!! Do not miss this one!!!

The special effects are off the charts. Its like you are in the forest with the actors. attention to detail, everything you see looks amazing. The story is average at best, we have seen it before with films like Dances with Wolves. The acting in this film was horrible. Except for Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver. But you don't go see Avatar for the acting, you go for the effects and the action and there is plenty.

Avatar is a movie that will wake people up and win awards and this is definately the movie that will accomplish all that they set out to do. This movie flows very well and speaks to you on a whole new level of communication. Mr. Cameron has outdone himself this time.Viewers will talk about this like we talked about Star wars years ago.The story line is superior. The actors were convincing and the scenery and color were like no other movie ever. See this movie on the biggest screen possible.If I didn't already own two Blu-ray players and a 7.1 channel surround sound system this movie would make me buy one.One of the few movies I have ever seen that brings life to the screen like nothing imaginable.I will buy this in Blu-Ray.

I was hoping this movie would live up to the hype around it, and it didn't... It blew it away! I figured that Cameron would make an excellent looking CGI film with fantastic special effects and a decent story to carry it. Let's put it this way... The CGI actors in this movie realistically portrayed emotions better than most I've seen this year with REAL actors. The planet of Pandora was alive, beautiful and frighteningly real. The story was gripping and I found myself cheering against my own people. The romance between Jake and his lady was heartfelt and came through very well. Now, I was going to write some cons, but frankly, I cannot think of one. Rare is a film I walk out of in anticipation of a sequel so much as I am with Avatar.

This was my first 3-D IMax and it did not dissapoint me from the start to the end it was awsome and the best part for me was that the producers didnt purposely have things thrown at you it was all natrual which made it awsome, I truley do hope they make a sequel which I do believe they can, a must see movie

James Cameron continues to deliver the "event" movie experience. I've waited years for Avatar to arrive and had the highest of expectations. The film exceed them all. Some of the most incredible 3D was found in the simplest of executions. The subtle, "not" in-your-face style draws you in and immerses you into every amazing scene.
Don't miss this one in IMAX 3D. The experience is worth three times the price of admission.

Great movie to take my 14 year old granddaughter to for a fun adventure. We bought a large popcorn and she got an cold drink. The movie was so good, we only ate the top 4 inches of the popcorn and drank 1/2 the drink. The time flew by. Good time by both of us.
I had heard it might be a little to much action for me, as I hardly ever go to a movie, but I loved every minute of it. Glad I went to the first showing as when we came out the lines were very long.

It was one of the most visually amazing movies that I've ever seen. The CGI was breathtaking and the 3D was lizard brain activating! The storyline although typical was still captivating. Really enjoyed the movie. This movie has take 3D and CGI to the next level. It will be hard to watch any other action / adventure movie without the superior 3D animation and CGI that Avatar has. A love story wrapped around this Sci - FI epic is great. A must see on IMAX 3D movie.

Although the story is not entirely original, the application of the premise and incredible visuals compensate for any lack of originality in the script. If possible, watch in Imax 3D, to fully take advantage of the visuals.
All acting was decent or better (the colonel was well played, as was Sully - look forward to him in Clash of the Titans).
Probably the best movie I've seen this year (or tied with Watchmen).

This has to be one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Visually, it's the Star Wars of our generation, like George Lucas, James Cameron has raised the bar in visual cinematics with one of the most gorgeous and lush movies of our time. The world of Pandora literally comes to life before your very eyes. The story is very cowboys and Indians in space, but brought up to the 21st century standards. This movie will have you wanting to see it again and again, if not for the story, to pickup on all the action and beauty you missed the first time around, as there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of things going on in scenes at any time.

It is a story that has been told many times. The CGI was amazing and will most certainly draw the crowds, but anyone who has ever heard the story of Pocahontas or seen Dances with Wolves will see the similarities.
