The 3-D IMAX experience took advantage of every opportunity to scare you about being in an unsafe place, off-balance and about to fall very far to the ground that was so far below it was shrouded in mist. In fact, that is my predominant memory of the movie. From flying straight down on a flying beast while hanging on to nothing or falling off a very high cliff and grasping a root by the finger tips, it was pretty real.
The war machines and the completely made up plants and animals were amazing.
Yes, I would recommend it to others but not so much for the story as the visual effects. The story had weak spots but who cares.

The best movie we have ever seen. The IMax 3D so enhanced the experience! It's been years since I left a theater stating that I would pay to see a movie a second time...honesty I would pay to see it again numerous times. Would love to see a sequel!

Avatar is a visual masterpiece; the world of pandora is a heavily detailed and very original environment. The stage is set for a masterpiece, however the original aspects of the story seem clipped to provide room for a overplayed and generic environmental admonishment that humans are bad and destroy trees for profit.

It was very good. The plot was old, but interesting with a new twist. The CG was fantastic and the sound was good. I grew up knowing imax as the screen that would engulf the audience at museums. This time it was not the case. The glasses made me feel skeavy as they were oily and the lens's dirty. Also they were too tight for my normal sized head which caused a headache. The screen was nothing special and I felt that some parts of the movie where blurry. I credit my frustration more to the theater itself than the actual movie. I will return after the holiday rush to view in digital 3D or 2D so I can compare. I will be purchasing the Blue Ray so I can view it on my HD home theater as well. I would have rated the movie a 5 of 5 otherwise.

The most detailed character and computerized scenes by the aid of 3D IMAX brought a banquet of vision; A heart touching story triggers your thoughts about conflicts between civilizations ever since human history after stepping out of theater -- what else can we expect so far for a movie? Avatar IMAX 3D is a wonderful and enthralling sensory experience. However, don't expect a unique story line. The Pandora world that Cameron created was breathtaking. I took my whole family to see it. My 70 year old grandmother to my 15 year old nephew enjoyed it immensely.

The best reason to see this movie is to thrill at the progress of movie technology because after that you will spend the whole time thinking "Where have I seen this before." This is a massive dose of anti-Americanism where we are left to feel guilty for just about everything including breathing. Spare me please; who wants to go to a movie to be preached to by Hollywood!

I generally like all movies, but this one has opened my eyes to the future of moviemaking and special effects. Much like Apple changes the direction of consumer electronics, this movie will certainly change the way CGI is used. Every little detail was constructed perfectly. I don't want to get too hung up on the special effects because it will make the story line seem inadequate. This is not the case - great story line which will leave you wanting more as the credits are rolling! Even though I'm right wing, and James Cameron is clearly as liberal as it gets with the messages behind this storyline, it was easy to look beyond this and really enjoy the movie. Great job to everyone involved and go see it today!

Best 3D ever with crystal-clear IMAX visuals, terrific depth and complexity of images. I enjoyed this movie immensely but the plot is very predictable and you can see situations coming from a mile away. Reviewers who do not acknowledge this are, sadly, easy to please. The first 20 minutes of the movie includes one of the greatest and most embarrassing examples of "laying pipe" in cinema where a character blurts out the back story in about 15 seconds of uninspired dialog. A fun film to watch, visually breathtaking. It takes 3D and CGI around a new corner. It's just not near "the best" or "the greatest" but simply neato cool glitzy fun. See it for what it is and take your friends; chances are good that they will love it.

This movie was an experience unlike other. In earlier movies I've seen, you have this heady feeling after a movie, but not this one.
The whole movie is so engrossing, that you never realize that the 2.5 hrs are long, that too w.o a break.
James Cameron has taken movie watching and movie taking both a couple of eons ahead .
All in all, a great narration, better than life like graphics, and a whole some conceptualization, that will take another Decade to beat, and it will be James who will do it, just like he did in T2, and Titanic.
If you miss it, you're missing something great !!!

If you just went for the artwork it would be well worth the price. However, the story, although pretty standard, is very well told. The fact that the director used actors (except for Sigourney Weaver) who were not well known dovetails with a story ecompassing the balance of life on a planet threatened by evil aliens (humans) and a love story. Everybody gets their shot and in this instance they're right on target. A movie classic for all time.

Forget the story - it's thin and only used to sort of hold it together. The rest of it is an incredible experience. How did they do it? I keep asking myself. Insofar as animation or whatever else, it's far and away the best ever - beyond Dreamworks, etc. It's not just for kids - it's an adult experience. Do not miss it - and if possible, see it in IMAX3D

Great SFX, superb photography and cinematic technology. I saw the Movie in IMAX 3D. This is the only way I would watch this. Watching Zoe Zaldana run around in that skimpy outfit made my heart race!
Unfortunately the movies goes nauseatingly kumbaya. It is reminiscent of Lion King during the Pride Rock scenes in the scenes at the Tree of Souls. It is a tree-hugger's peacenik movie without a doubt.
I give it a maximum of 3-stars for the plot. It is entertaining but too much environmentalist green bull for me. Once was enough, enjoyed but would not go again.

PHENOMENAL does not begin to describe the state of the art animation and computer generated world of the AVATAR. Add I-MAX, 3-D, powerful surround sound and you are over the top !
Great story line. Please take special note of the "connection" that the NAVI make with all creatures around them, their planet, and their GOD, all one global network.
If only we could realize our ability to connect to our Eternal Source of life and ability, our GOD, quit fighting over ideology, and quit plundering each other and our planet, eliminate greed.
Hopefully AVATAR will plant these seeds of thought.

Cameron delivers! Excellent F/X and solid story, albeit the latter smacked of Dances with Wolves and The Abyss parallels in a very different setting. My kids and I loved it! Reminded me of seeing Star Wars as a child for the first time. Delivered Lord of the Rings quality F/X with several WOW's with the IMAX 3-D version. Highly Recommended and will easily recoup its investment.

I 5-starred this movie because I didn't have the option for half a star. Really, the half was only because about 30 minutes could have been cut without any great fuss. Avatar shows that Ms Weaver is still the awesomest strong, female actor out there; Ms Saldana has a gift for making hissing noises (and I mean that); and Mr Worthington has a bright future. Seeing Avatar in IMAX isn't necessary, but the 3D is worth the couple extra bucks. The tall and lithe blue people are amazingly realized, but I don't know that CGI is going to replace live action anytime soon. It is a fantastic tool for story-telling and I look forward to what James Cameron pulls out next.
