More Angel Smackdown Needed

There were moments in this film where you caught glimpses of what it COULD have been. For the most part, it was unexceptional. Lucas Black looks several IQ points below average when he's listening intently (think mouth-breather) and Paul Bettany didn't have much to do other than shoot stuff, sound portentous and British and to shoot more stuff. If you were jonesing for Doug Jones, it's a disappointment.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Visually Stunning, Too Long

I 5-starred this movie because I didn't have the option for half a star. Really, the half was only because about 30 minutes could have been cut without any great fuss. Avatar shows that Ms Weaver is still the awesomest strong, female actor out there; Ms Saldana has a gift for making hissing noises (and I mean that); and Mr Worthington has a bright future. Seeing Avatar in IMAX isn't necessary, but the 3D is worth the couple extra bucks. The tall and lithe blue people are amazingly realized, but I don't know that CGI is going to replace live action anytime soon. It is a fantastic tool for story-telling and I look forward to what James Cameron pulls out next.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
