This storyline have been use for years but the Special Effects and 3D experience is definitely worth your time. Good family, date and or even by yourself movie................I would see it again in the theater.

The plot has strong analogies to an alien "Dances with the Wolves" and rider\dragon bonding compares to Eragon, nevertheless, the world Cameron created was beautiful and spectacular. Anyone with an appreciation for the creative and graphics work to pull this off will be amazed. Each Nai've having their own character and style, and breadth of wild life and jungle animals incredible.
I agree with the other reviewer; Zoe Saldana should be up for an Oscar. The depth of emotion from humorous to agony, from hunter to companion, and doing much without seeing environment while shooting.
We loved it. Everyone who world on it should be very proud, and it should go hand-in-hand with other technically ground-breaking movies like Stars Wars.

This movie is really something to see. The set and all the effects (especially in 3D) are outstanding. Not only is the set great, but the storyline is as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone to see! If you have the opportunity, definitely splurge and go for the IMAX 3D. You won't regret it!

Wow!! What an experience!! iMAX was sensational, and the movie itself ranks way up there as one of the best ever - right with Star Wars & LOTR. The attention to detail and story telling were spectacular. Visuals were simply stunning and the whole story was fascinating. We saw it twice now, and enjoyed it more the 2nd time! A must see for everyone. Our 3 year old daughter enjoyed it too.

I gave the movie 5 stars because it will definitely will immerse you in the story. However if you are looking for the IMAX 3D version to pull you out of your seat and blow you away you will be a little disappointed. Certain parts of the movie were enhanced by the effects, but there simply weren't enough. Most IMAX 3D features take your breath away and pull you in the film. The effects in this film did not. Seems like they missed a golden opportunity in 3D here.
The 2 hour and 40 minutes fly by. The story kept moving along and the special effects/GCI only enhanced the film and never took away from it.
Go see it.

Took my 15 year old son and wife to this movie and all three of us loved it. This normally is not the kind of movie my wife and I would go to, but glad we did. Special effects in IMAX 3D just rocked! I did pick up on the political undertone a little, but still enjoyed the story. Better buy tickets in advance and show up early for good seats. You won't regret it.

The ending I felt should have been better especially coming from James Cameron. The special effects in IMAX 3d makes up for any flaws in the movie. The Navis are very likeable and at one moment I even shed a tear.

While it is true that Avatar's plot is not going to win any awards in the originality department, the screen presentation is utterly unsurpassed. Direction and cinematography are fantastic, and the CGI is nothing short of miraculous. Weta Studios and ILM have managed to cross the "uncanny valley" and are quite close to making the effects indistinguishable. A highly recommended viewing experience if your expectations are kept to the visual realm.

Visually stunning adventure. Cameron has created a world that draws you in in ways only like Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings did when they first came out.
BUT, the plot is blatently political, overly so. The story has been done a hundred times in movies like Little Big Man, Dances with Wolves, Lawrence of Arabia with some Lord of the Rings and Return of the Jedi thrown in. You'll swear you've seen the final battle scene before, almost frame by frame.
But still, it was good fun. See it in IMAX. Only way to see it.

This movie is perfect for the IMax 3D experience. None of the typical 'stuff coming at you' that you see in mde for 3d movies. Just a wonderful three dimensional image of an alien world populated by creatures of fantasy. The combination of adventure, sci fi and love story are balanced well. I recommend this to everyone big and small.

Although the plot is nothing special, the setting is amazing. The na'vi are a believable but fantastic people living on an equally believable but even more fantastic world.
The story is paced very well and the action scenes are exciting, and especially intense in 3D.
I don't know what the movie experience is like in a normal theater, but I do not for a moment regret paying extra for IMAX 3D.

Absolute best movie I have ever seen. But it is Zoe Saldana's performance that I most want to review. She SHOULD win the Oscar, if the rules allow her to be nominated. Totally immersed in her Navi character, and totally mesmerizing on screen, her performance shining through all the CGI overlay. Like Jakesully, I would have tried to ride the Moktor dragon for her too.

This was the first movie I had been to in years where people were actually applauding and cheering at the end of the movie. Unbelievably gorgeous movie and phenomenal story. I loved every minute of it! I am counting the days until I can watch this @ home in 3D. OVER and OVER and OVER.

I walked out of the movie and I was speechless. This movie is probably one of the most amazing films that I have ever seen in my entire life. It was beautiful and stunningly amazing. The CGI effects looked and felt real. Going to the 3D IMAX is probably the only way I can recommend to see this movie because it truly helps you to be engulfed in the whole experience and the whole world. I will be seeing it again and will recommend it to anyone at anytime. This is a must see movie and must be seen in the theatres.

I'm not sure where to begin. There's so much to love. I've seen it twice in IMAX, and I still gaped at the vistas. The sights might never get old, but they will, alas, get smaller when I have to see it on DVD. Oh, and let's not forget the powerful story.

Movie is very good, but I felt the almost 3 hours. Actually wanted to check my watch after the first hour, until more of the story involved life on Pandora. The film reminds me of DANCES WITH WOLVES (which was also 3 hours, but that movie flew by). Performance capture was better than I've seen, but faces still rigid; mouths especially. Sam Worthington was not as good as I'd heard. Pandora creatures were great. Lots of fun to watch. The epic battle was so realistic and moving I started to cry.

The shift from competition to cooperation in our world will be necessary to survive the planetary changes already in progress. The creators of this movie obviously understand the concept. With the power of this movie to influence, it is a wonderful consciousness that Avatar chooses to promote.
From a visual perspective, the IMAX 3D Experience's potential has been fully realized. This isn't "poke-you-in-the-eye" 3D, it's "total immersion" 3D. Your brain doesn't fight it. Your brain welcomes it. And it want's more.
The two of us plan to see it at least once more in IMAX 3D. We paid $8.75 on a Tuesday night to see this film and we felt we got our money's worth.

It was amazing. I got so rapped up in the 3D and special effects. It is amazing what can be done in the studio now. The story was great and the action was even better. This was one of the coolest movies I ever saw. When the movie ended I just sat back and said "WOW", expensive in IMAX but worth it.

I watched the movie in IMAX 3D. The 3D visuals were truly revolutionary and stunning to behold.The best part is that it's simply part of the movie, rather a gimmick forced into a movie.
The story was unoriginal. If you watched Dances with Wolves or Last Samurai, you got 90% of the plotline except for a different ending. Nonetheless, the movie was overall a very enjoyable experience. Highly recommended.

While the stories are borrowed from other films, especially Cameron's own, it's a whole new wrapper. The telling of those stories, so wonderfully entwined into one makes all the difference and puts a whole new way of making movies out there for other directors to use. The directing and the writing is great. The technology behind the special effects create such wonderful visual effects that does nothing but add to the acting ability of most of the cast. IMAX 3D gives so much to those effects that it almost makes me weep at how much even the BluRay DVD on a 60" will pale in comparison.
