Avatar does work as eye candy because visually the film was very impressive, which does make it worth watching. However, the story/dialogue are not as fresh the visuals. The movie would have benefited from being 30 to 40 minutes shorter. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 7 here I guess I will give it a four.

I went to see this movie with both my wife and friend and we all thoroughly enjoyed this movie. We saw the IMAX 3D version and it was an amazing experience. You felt totally immersed in the movie. It was well worth the 12 year wait for another great James Cameron movie and all the hype that went along with it. Would highly recommend for people of all ages and my wife will most likely go back and see it again.

I did not want to see this movie but took my husband and daughter on Christmas day and WOW was I impressed. The whole movie was exciting with some parts being absolutely beautiful. The flowers and the floating mountains are wonderful effects. The battle scene is so real. James Cameron did a fantastic job on this one. I do recommend that you see it on Imax. What a ride!!!

Avatar is a wonder to look at. James Cameron's film is a technical marvel, and the world he creates is beyond realistic. The only shortcoming with this film is character development. The characters are all one-dimensional, and while our hero (Jake Sully) has a change of heart about the alien tribe and the human's treatment of them, the portrayal onscreen is not fully fleshed out. The bad guys are just bad guys, with no complexity to their characters. Richer characters would make this an instant classic.

Avatar will soon be legendary. It is the most unique and captivating movie I've ever witnessed. I did not just 'see' Avatar, I witnessed a movie that was hyper-realistic; the CGI scenes were more detailed than the live action shots (intentional or not?). As the movie progressed, Jake Sully's life as a paraplegic appeared unreal and his adventures with the Na'Vi became his new reality. This visual evolution was startling and unprecedented. At the end, Jake's Avatar even looked more realistic than it did in the beginning of the movie.
The story is multi-layered and accessible to many age groups. It is well told and is more than good enough to go along with the spectacular (never-seen-before) visuals to make AVATAR AN INSTANT CLASSIC.

This was an amazing movie that took me on an unbelieveable fantasy trip to Pandora and totally immersed me in the story and the breathtaking technology used to create this one-of-a-kind movie. While the storyline was somewhat predictable, it was still compelling and interesting throughout the movie; but the IMAX 3D with booming surround sound experience along with the amazing movie special effects and animation were mesmerizing. I was left thinking this was something everyone should experience and this is definitely the movie technology of the future. You must see this movie in IMAX 3D!

This wasn't the first time I saw a 3D Imax show, but it was the first full length motion picture for me in that category. What a show! I have never been taken away like that - you are litterally in the movie and what a movie to be part of. If you don't view this movie in Imax 3D, while it's available, you are missing out on one of life's rare treasures.

This is my first experience viewing a movie where the CGI characters and other effects are not detectable. All are seamlessly integrated with real actors making for a truly believable experience.
My only gripe is with the 3D viewing glasses. They appear to be made so that the tips of the frame that go behind your ears place a lot of tension onto your head. Might be OK for a short viewing but not with a full length movie. The back of my neck hurt and even with periodic movement there wasn't any relief.

It exceeded our expectations -- we expected it to be entertaining but we actually really liked the story too. We were a group of 5 -- two of us were not big sci-fi people, but we enjoyed the special effects. Definitely recommend the 3D IMAX experience. Having said that, I thought it was about 20-30 min. too long. A little bothered with Signorey Weaver's character smoking in a controlled scientific lab environment. Also not the best message re: smoking knowing this is a perceived "family" movie.

This movie reminded me of the experience I had when I first saw Star Wars. I was 18 and I remember thinking I had actually visited another world. Avatar is the same experience. I took my 13 year old daughter and she shared the same feelings I had about Star Wars. We felt as if we had seen, touched, and even smelled this planet, this world. I can't imagine going to see movies that aren't IMAX 3D again. Hopefully, this will help Hollywood sees the importance of the movie experience for the viewers.

Not only beautiful, but a great story as well. Jake Sully's transformation to his Navi avatar, his interest in Neytiri, and his introduction to Navi ways made the movie really move forward quickly. The floating mountains were amazing, but a little disorienting in 3D. Our elementary-aged child found it visually overwhelming.

Honestly, I did not expect such a powerful breakthrough in the field of animation so soon. Immensity of 3d efects is shocking. Throughout there is a sense of proportion which only reinforces the urgency of sensations from the movie.
The plot is fairly simple and a scenario can be predicted by 2 if not 3 steps ahead, but do not want so .... Very good

By far the best movie experience ever for me. Not saying the best movie ever but the experience in IMAX 3D is just out of this world. I would say though it is in my top 5 of best movies. Even if you don't like scifi you will like this for the story and the lives of the Navi. My wife does not like scifi in fact we went to District 9 and I had to bribe her to stay. So I saw this with a freind and then begged her to go. Finally after days and fights about it she gave in and actually loved it. So for you sceptics out there experience an incredible movie that will draw you in and never let you go. Make sure you use the restroom and get your food before in fact don't even drink anything you don't want to miss 1 second!

Fanstastic visual effects and graphics. Story although not the best, still very good and something new and different. Sends a nice message to the people.
3D is more realistic rather than usual popping in your eye type of effects.
2hr 40m is still long and the glasses still strain your eye wearing for such long time.

This is a movie that is definitely worth the extra bucks to see in IMAX 3D. I had to use the bathroom an hour into the movie, but held it in the rest of the way because I didn't want to miss one second. Very few corny parts, but the special effects are amazing, and they fit well with the movie. I know there are few IMAX theaters, but please make the effort to see the IMAX version....awesome!

The story line was totally predictable, but the world that was created was stunning. The 3D IMAX only made it better. My two kids sat through the whole thing and really enjoyed it. They had been bugging me for weeks to see this movie. They were not disappointed. The foul language was not something I enjoyed explaining to them. There was also some EEWWs during a intimate moment but soon forgotten when the action started up again. Overall, worth seeing.

First movie I can say that 3D did have a significant impact to the overall impact and story of a show...and quite a spectacular and thrilling show it is both visually and content-wise.
