You need to see this in all its glory in Imax 3D. The visual effects in this mode are fantastic. Without that effect, however, the story line is thin, predictable, and been done before. If you see it at the Imax, though, you won't care.

As some others have said, seeing this in IMAX 3D is the way to go. The movie is a visual treat, not just for the things you see, but for how it pulls you into the story. The vision the movie-makers had for the visuals is spectacular.
Although the story is familiar (think 60% Dances With Wolves, 10% The Matrix, 5% Starship Troopers, 5% Star Wars, and 20% new/creative story), the story is interesting to watch and entertaining.
Overall, a great movie. One of the best SCI FI movie-watching experiences I've had in many years.

If you have not had a chance to see to Avatar, and/or are on the fence, I would highly recommend it. It's worth the effort. If not for anything else, the sheer visual experience.
It is an absolutely amazing and revolutionary piece of filmmaking. I personally believe this the forefront of a new genre of filmmaking providing the ultimate immersive experience.
I saw Avatar in IMAX 3D - in my opinion the best way to see this film. If you are not able to catch an IMAX 3D version, then see it in any 3D version.
The film was shot with special 3D cameras invented by Cameron for the making of this film. Seeing it in 2D will NOT do it full justice.
Thanks Mr. Cameron for once again setting a new standard in epic film creation!

This was beautiful; a movie you need to experience in the theater. I was afraid there would not be much of a story given the hype on the technology but I did enjoy the story as well. It was a bit predictable at times but it didn't feel any where near 2 hours and 40 minures.
Note that two in my party felt nauseous from the experience. I, however, am quick to get car sick but only felt a glimmer of nausea for less than one minute at the start.
A must see!

A mix of Aliens/Dances with Wolves (only this time, most of the humans are like the Aliens)with a nice philosophy of life by the residents of Pandora. Possibility of redemption of humans and saving our own planet from destroying "Our Mother" suggested.

The Imax 3D was amazing. Not your parents paper 3D glasses anymore. The effects were so facinating you think your in Pandora. Has to be the best movie I've seen in years. I think I never even moved throughout the 2 plus hours of the movie. Was totally mezmerized.

I absolutely LOVED this movie and I will see it in the theatre at least one more time. Time flew by and it was the first movie I went to that everyone was silent throughout and applauded at the end. Go see it!!!!

This movie was terrific. The IMAX experience was worth it. I took my two young children for the first time to experience the IMAX theater and it blew their mind. We all loved the movie. I highly recommend watching it either 3D or IMAX. It is worth spending the money. Great job James Cameron!!!

Truly a piece of art! This movie exceeded all expectations that I had. The graphics alone are worth the price of admission but was surprised at the fact that in the 2hrs and 40mins of the film there wasn't a single moment of down time where you might be tempted to run to the bathroom. (make sure you go before the movie starts) The plot was also captivating and kept you guessing as to how it would all work out. The only disappointing part was the negative picture it painted of "So Called" Marines in what I could only describe as "the future" but then again it is from Hollywood, not the most supportive group of people of wars and our troops so not really surprising.
I will be going back to see it again and I recommend it to everyone!

Spectacular. See at IMAX/3D. I recommend sitting halfway up for optimum viewing.
Reminded me of what happened to the American Indians. They too had Respect for each Other, Mother Earth, and a clear connection to Spirit...
Their conquerors worshipped wealth and power, and their followers were not much more than robots, but that's what happens when you give your vital attention over to the false promises of the greedy.
It won't be the same if you wait for the cheap seats in your living room and I predict that you will then, regret having missed your chance to see this one on the big screen.
I wouldn't listen to negative remarks, unless you are a robot and need their programming.

After finishing the movie, I was tempted to perceive the movie in two separate ways. First, I was going to give the movie an A for special effects. Second, I was going to give the story an A-/B+, holding it as high as the new Star Trek.
Thinking about it deeper, you should not separate Avatar's effects from its story. Avatar is a story about the power of perspective; the immersive experience of another culture moves a human beyond prejudice. The 3D cinema experience is also powerful, and brings us ever closer to the characters. Is there an inflection point when our own hearts may be so changed by a story that we will challenge authority? Will technology amplify stories to make these inflection points happen more quickly? Final Grade: A.

Excellent story, well told although the "evil company" aspect was overdone as usual. It was mind-boggling to think about the amount of detail that went into creating an entire environment. The 3D effects were appropriately done, without unnecessary things flying into your face. Really something special.

This movie was awesome in 3-d. However, Imax screen in Gateway 12 was tiny compared to the screen in Imax Arizona Mills where I watched Star Wars 2. I really wish I went the extra 10 miles to AZ Mills to see this movie on a huge screen. I didn't think we would be waiting in a line to get in since we pre-purchaced tickets online. Barely had enough time to find seats after showing up an hour early and the line didn't move untill 10 minutes before the movie began. The visuals are the best this movie has to offer. Story was good not great, kinda predictable. Not nearly as cool as T2 was when it came out. Overall for this movie I would rate visuals 10+ the story 7 and the theatre 3

I had heard the script was weak but I found it to be great! I loved everything about the movie. I don't think the 3D had any effect one way or the other though. I loved the colors, the scenery. I could watch this movie over and over again!

Stunning visual effects, the 3-D IMAX experience was incredible. Cameron has created a detailed alien world that was fun to explore along with the Avatars. Had he left it at that I would have given 5 stars to the movie. Instead it evolved into a fundamentalist environmental screed where the evil U.S. military beats up on the "valiant", saintly Tree worshipers to get some valuable rocks for evil capitalist corporations. Ridiculous. That almost pulled it down to 1 star for me. The Avatars are more interesting than the cartoonish buffoons trying to defend them. Sigourney Weaver will be laughing all the way to the bank as the evil capitalist Cameron also makes a fortune off this visually delightful, content foolish movie!

One word sums up this masterpiece: AWESOME! Experienced in Imax 3D, from the very first frames to hit the screen, your mind is on sensory overload. No exageration, you really do feel as though you are right there on Pandora, safely watching every scene unfold. Avatar is more like going on a visual thrill ride than simply "watching" a movie. Even with a 2hr 40min run time, you WILL NOT get up to use the restroom. You won't even get to consider it!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that audiences can see that the intense action scenes are a way of reminding us that no group has the right to take over the land and culture of another. What was happening on Pandora is a metaphor for not only what the invading Europeans did to the Native Americans, but what has happened all over the world, throughout history, when one power believes it has the right to invade and assume control over native peoples.
