What a great film - especially for Fantasy.Science Fiction action movie fans. The best I've seen . It has new levels of 3D technology, great sound levels, good musical score and even a nice boy-gets-girl story and the bad guys (us!) loose.
At the end of the movie there was an ensorcelled quiet applause and when the credits started to roll, usually people start leaving -but nobody did! They just wanted to stay in that other world.

A very memorable movie. The computer generated characters, amimals and scenery where the best I have ever seen. The 3D IMAX was an exciting experience, but as my two grandsons told me, it was like the icing on the cake, they would be happy to see the movie without it. I agree.

This movie was amazingly awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the 2 hrs and 40 minutes flew by. Don't listen to the haters that knock this movie. They only hate cause that's just what they do :-) I watched it in IMAX 3D and was blown away!

The formulas is well known: disaffected soldier gets posted to an isolated billet, "goes native" and tries to intervene in the inevitable conflict between two cultures on the extremes of a technological divide. I find it compelling, time after time. I am a sucker for the underdog and cheer as loudly as anyone when they prevail. What makes this NOT just an exercise in applying that formula is the incredible quality of the animation, coherence of the story's universe and the flawless narrative pace. If only all CGI spectacles adhered to such tight editorial practices the genre would deserve more critical respect.

The visual effects were amazing. But more importantly, the story was horrible. The story was corny and not well thought out. Without digging, I now know the political leaning of James Cameron. He is a anti-war, green lefty. I wouldn't mind the green/anti-war message but the thinking behind this message was on a second grade level. Environment=good. Corporations = evil. Science= good. War= evil. And then the dialogue. The mineral the greedy corporation wanted was called Unobtainium (sooo clever!). The war strategy was called "Shock and Awe." Hmmm... I wonder what this was referring to? The story was so bad that it ruined the entire experience. I would have rather spent 3 hours just watching the special effects with no story and no dialogue.

The Imax 3-D effects are amazing and they blend seamlessly with the live action portion. My 13 and 10 year olds loved it and had no problem with the nearly 3 hour length. Could do without the "Political" message, but terrific none-the-less.

I'd describe it as a fusion of Dances with Wolves (similar story) and the Star Wars or Terminator series (the effects). It was a good, albeit predictable story, but clearly this movie was dominated by the effects, which were outstanding. For SciFi fans, this is a must see, although it has crossover appeal as well.

I was very dissapointed by this IMAX experience. # 1 the theater had major technical problems starting the previews and movie - at least for the first ten or twenty tries - whcih meant we ran 30 minutes late. # 2 whatever my expectations of IMAX were the reality didn't come close. It was a small screen. The 3D was cool though. # 3 the directions to the theateron the IMAX website are WRONG and we got lost an almost got there late - and when we did we had trouble finding a seat for three of us. We wasted 1.5 hours driving each way for the IMAX experience. I would not recommend it.

I recommend this movie with some hesitation, but it boils down to the ONLY reason to see it is for the 3D effects, which you just won't get on TV. That said, the novelty of these special effects becomes thin after the first hour.
It's unfortunate that they spent so much time/money on this movie, with little more to show for it than the effects. Cliched characters, sporadically interesting plot, and DEADLY dialogue. I was itching to get out after 2 hours.
And I don't see how anyone could possibly compare this movie to "Star Wars," which in its time was much more innovative and at least had some humor/pathos in its dialogue and characters.

Amazing Film. I walked into this movie expecting a big let down. For months it's been talked about and promoted, how could it be that great? I walked out completely awestruck. The characters, whether CGI or real, with the help of a great script, draw you in and make you forget that 95% of it is fake. The premise of the film is a definite reminder of what's wrong in our own world (did somebody say "Bush Era?"). I recommend everyone see it so they can also be reminded of what's right in our world.

First off, this technology and the way it was employed in this film is the biggest invention since the talkie. Some would say this movie is corny. Yes, there is a love story between a boy and a girl. But, the big love story in this movie is that of The People and their planet. The fact that most reviewers didn't get that is a sad statement about our stewardship of our own planet (a point that Cameron makes in the movie, btw). Avatar is a big statement about our time in history. Apparently, it is not thinly veiled enough for some. Whatever. Go for the eye candy. Go for the savagery if you can't get that out of your blood. But, if you are a romantic who believes there's hope for the future, go for the love stories -- they're both good.

I had never seen a movie in IMAX before; so this was a great experience. The plot was fairly simple, which is good for my partner who is not really into SCIFI. The visual effects truly brought you into the movie. I had concerns about the length, but it didn't seem that long. If you liked Titanic, then you'll love this one, too. I even teared up on a scene.

The genius of this film shows from the get go! It is an incredible IMAX 3D fantasy!
We all walked away having been in another world. Only later reflection would help interpret what we saw.If you start the film with a blank in your mind as I had, you do not know the direction it will take.
I came into the story with my empathy on the human side. The alien planet's environment was hostile and foreboding. It is kill or be killed, no time to think- just react!
I left having a totally different point of view- not bad for a film critically accused of parallel plots from former works.
'Avatar' touched my heart and left me regretting having to leave the theater to go home!
Did anyone say sequel?

What a great movie!! It's the ONLY one I've seen yet that it was worth paying extra for 3d and Imax!! I loved the amazing visual effects and sound but most loved the story line. It had a ton of very deep messages, mostly dealing with our connection to mother earth and the universe and the disasterous disconnection humans can have all because of greed. This movie had it all!!
The best thing was at the end when my 16yr old son told me he wanted to go live with and be like them!

The 3D was immersive, did not overpower the film, and the glasses were not cardboard. The ~3 hours sped by. The plot was..a plot - nothing groundbreaking or breathtaking, but enjoyable.
If there was a downside to the experience, it was waiting almost half an hour after the advertised starting time for the film to begin. The ~3 hours of movie went by quickly, but that wait to even start had us all champing at the bit.

Regency 24 IMAX, Jacksonville, Fla. First let me say that the story has been told before. Read your high school history book. Next though, the graphics are BEYOND DESCRIPTION. While 15.00 is a little steep for a movie ticket, I was not disappointed.

Easily the most immersive filmgoing experience for me since the original Star Wars. The effects are amazing, and the world they created is breathtaking and alive. IMAX 3D enriches the environment adding depth to the gorgeous imagery; the 3D is not used for cheap 'pop out' effect. While I would give the IMAX 3D experience 5 stars simply for the grandeur of the images and effects, I would give the story and characters in Avatar 3 1/2 stars. The story was very familiar and predictable, and the messages were not subtle in the least. But the characters and plot did grow on me and I really did become emotionally invested, so director Cameron accomplished what he set out to do. He worked on this film for over a decade, and it shows.
