'The Messenger' isn't as great as I expected from other reviews, but it is good, and well acted. I suppose you could interpret it as anti-war if you wanted to, but to me it was more the story of a short time period in the lives of a couple of army personnel that had to bring the bad news of a soldier's death to the next of kin, with the resulting emotions and consequences. It's not a typical story with a well defined beginning and ending. This movie could, however, be quite enlightening to those who haven't previously contemplated the human component of the effects of war.

Script, story, pacing, cinematography, score - all A+. Add pitch perfect acting by the entire cast and - viola - you have a nearly perfect movie. Some critics have said this a left-wing liberal slant on the war and on our military. I did not take it that way. War is H*ll! It always will be. This film deals with the repercussions of warriors killed in action and the extraordinary men who are charged with notifying the nearest of kin of their death. Tough stuff! A well-told tale about the heroes that guard our freedoms and those that give the ultimate sacrifice . See it!

A deeply anti-war movie with tremendous characterizations by the two main protagonists. Woody Harrelson has proven once and for all that he has it in him to be a serious actor. Belongs in the pantheon of Iraq/Afghanistan movies with In the Valley of Elah and Hurt Locker.

Saw this movie twice in the same week. Can't wait to buy the DVD. I was particularly struck by Ben Foster's performance. He had the enlisted Army guy down so well: body language, the attitude, the fatalism. To me his facial expressions alone were worth the price of admission. Woody Harrelson turned in one of, maybe his best, performance ever. Discussing this movie with my girlfriend, we were also struck by how there was so much 'stuff' packed into a 107 minute movie. Much to think about and mull over. Five stars.
