I should have known it was an omen when we saw one preview after another with comic book plots and starring special effects instead of actors. These film makers have successfully turned a clasic literary franchise into the "whap bam pow" of Batman television. On a positive note, the cast was enjoyable and can really act since they read the script with straight faces. We really need to find a way to let Hollywood know we are smarter than this.

If spending millions of dollars on violent, fire-breathing scenes, countless head butts, witless sarcasm and blood and gore is the measure of greatness, then this is a great film. If smooth-flowing plot, excellent characterization, believable turn of events is what you value, skip this film. I long for the Sherlock Holmes of old: restrained, cultured, reasonable who wins by a battle of wits and not by a battle of countless groin kicks. This is clearly a film aimed at the hip, slick and cool generation who adore violence and demand only meagre sense in a silly plot trying to capitalize on the Dan Brown Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol genre. A bloody waste of time and was thrilled when the movie was over.

The only thing this had in common with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, was the theft of the name, and the location (London). Otherwise, this was one of the most abysmal interpretations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works ever. Truly horrific, and disappointing. Holmes was not a ninja, he was not a childish braggard and he had significantly more class and brains than Downey portrays. Arthur Conan Doyle is spinning in his grave.

It's hard to imagine such a younger pair of
the legendary super sleuths, but, somehow,
Downey and Law pull it off!
Their quirky, comic style makes this version
quite palpable.
Full of martial arts skills, the pair adroitly meet their foe (Mark Strong) in the role of a foil for the always nefarious "Moriarty" (barely seen) as he(they) lead them through a sometimes serious but, comical chase through London's city streets.
The occult plays a key role for both the problem and solution of the final riddle.
A fun version of the traditional, if that's your
suit!!

My husband and I both enjoyed this movie immensely! The action sequences were great, and Robert Downey, Jr. did a great job of humanizing the Sherlock Holmes character. I really enjoyed the way they incorporated science without being overt about it. Great story, great chemistry between characters, great cast. I would definitely see it again!

The super slueth of old is gone and replaced with a Jean Claude Von Dam type, as is his partner, Dr. Watson. The story line becomes very soft because of the unending violence accompanied by loud noise and music that overcame some of the dialog.
There is plenty of action in Sherlock Holmes (at times). Unfortunately, the attempt at making our hero a super slueth is fairly lame and the action mostly unbelievable.
Not a movie for true Sherlock Holmes mystery buffs. The acting is good, but that is the redeeming value for the film. I would not recommend it if there is another option. Too long, too noisy, bad sound, fair dialog and in general not that great. That sums up my impression (save your money).

Overall, I thought it was a good movie and RD, jr is spectacular as Holmes. Jude Law was a strong supporting actor as well. RD might be one of the greatest actors of our generation. At no point was I reminded of Iron Man or Tropic Thunder. The storyline could have moved along faster in some places. All in all it was a good movie but not the blockbuster as promised. It was long but so was the Dark Knight and I never got tired of it. I believe this comes from the way the story line was weaved together from multiple characters. Sherlock plays like one large canvas with SHERLOCK written all over it!

Being a staunch Sherlock Holmes fan I was eager to see this movie. I did enjoy it and would recommend it to others. Although the characters have been "souped up" for presentation for today's audiences. I prefer the restrained mania of Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock in the BBC series.

The movie was just ok as far as I was concerned. I was with 2 others and we all dozed off at some point during the first hour or so. The story line was boring, but Downey and Law did a great job. Overall I was disappointed that the movie did not live up to my expectations.

You are IN the nitty-gritty, sooty world of old London. The scenery or art direction, from start to finish, was perfect. Holmes and Dr. Watson were on a more equal footing than the original pair, but here, it works. Downey Jr. and Jude Law were the perfect choice for the roles. Robert Downey played all Sherlock's imperfections to perfection, ingenious, but an utter mess, you can't help but love him. Accents too thick? No, they are not. Old London accents ARE thick. Sorry, but I don't want my films dummied-down. I understood every word. Guy Ritchie took big chances with the way he did things, the flash-forward/flash-backs were a big risk, one I thought brilliant. It did require you pay attention, a big drawback for some I guess.

Loved the cinematography and the consistancy of the style and color. Guy Richie did an excellent job with his choices.

Overall fun to watch but miss the more cerebral side of Holmes; the physical side was great as it developed, particularly in the planning part - could have done without so much blood; the plot is thin - need a better mystery to solve and stay away from the supernatural. Very much enjoyed the give and take of Law and Downey. The movie looked good, and was fun, but lacked any depth.

...that a movie is a STORY...told with moving pictures....live action...or animation. You'll notice the only thing capitalized is the word STORY....and this one didn't have one. Amazes me how Hollywood can spend all those millions and forget that fact. Know how I can tell there was no story? I couldn't remember the movie ten minutes after I left. I had to come home and read the critics reviews to learn what I forgot so quickly.
I LOVE Robert Downey Jr. But he had no personality...no real goal...and so his character wasn't someone I cared about which is IMPORTANT. LOL I would tell my friends to wait and get it on DVD.

Went with my 15 year-old daughter and 24 year-old son. Both of them loved it! Thought it was action-packed and amazing. I thought it was a bit slow, but overall still a really good movie. Fun, funny, dark....it was really a great combination!

This is the best movie we have seen in a long while in the theaters. The story line and humor is directed toward adults so we wouldn't recommend for kids under 13 - hence the rating. Loved the parallel of Holmes life and Downey's. Jude Law played a good Watson as well. Great choice of actors! We look forward to the sequel we know is coming.

Too many fight Scenes. Holmes would have figured out how to end a fight with one blow. Story line too thin - was only a small part of the movie. Should have been revealing clues throughout the movie, not a 2 minute wrap-up at the end.

Movie is full of actions and jokes, with really good actors. But is not recommended for funs of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories about Sherlock Holmes because has nothing from original except names. For funs I would recommend to see English or Russian movie about Sherlock Holmes.

Robert Downey mumbled endlessly thru the whole film....couldnt really tell What he was saying and his accent was not good at all ( i just saw Invictus where Matt Damon's south african accent was really great!!)
and the unending violence was horrible and I had a hard time getting through it..
it lost my interest because there was sooooooooo much violence ....

Admittedly I have become a bit of a RD Jr groupie :) and he does not disappoint in his portrayal of the eccentric and "all knowing" Holmes. Jude Law I believe served as a great balance to Holmes' character as the ever reliable Dr. Watson his characters development wasn't incredibly deep but interesting enough to provide greater understanding to the Holmes & Watson partnership without overshadowing the main story. Overall it was a great movie - even greater date movie if your gal likes mysteries, action and explosions ;)

A great movie, full of mystery, romance, humor, action, and suspence. Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. played excellent roles. The fight scenes where so captivating. Not what I expected at all. I loved the comedy especially. Kept me laughing the whole time.

Poor attempt at a grandiose plot. It fell flat. Holmes moments of deduction where hurried and the viewers were never given a chance to have think time which is what you would want in the genre. It seems to me that most of the effort when into making London seem realistic to the epoch while the writing suffered.

Good flick, well written, interesting characters and good action. Holmes is acted superbly by Downey, and he and Watson make a believable team. Best parts are Holmes' kung fu moves, as well as his constant ramblings of his lunatic attention to detail.
