I was really looking forward to this one. I knew it would be a stupid kind of comedy, but for the most part it was just stupid. I did laugh out loud a handful of times, but the funny moments were brief and spread out over a terrible movie script. It seems like there was no thought put into plot or creativity. More like "Let's just put Steve in awkward and unbelievable situations and hope it's funny." I had high hopes, but it was choppy, extremely uncomfortable, and lacking any real creativity.

This was awful...a few funny spots, but not many, kind of painful to endure. And more crude than I expected - must have followed the "if you can't be funny, just be crude". Shocked that Steve Carrell was associated with this.

A very funny, well written comedy that avoids the pitfalls of most comedies ("serious" scenes, cheap laughs, weak plots, etc). Steve Carell is at his comic best, and Paul Rudd holds his own at every turn. In a world full of cynics, I'm with the fools. Professional critics blasted this movie for being predictable. Frankly what Hollywood fare isn't? It's how you get there that counts. This is Carell's movie and he makes his character, "Barry" endearing. From the Beatles' song at the beginning to how Rudd's character reacts to Barry, there's just enough empathy to keep the movie from being mean-spirited. Good comedies that can keep a consistent tone are hard to come by. This one achieves that and enough laughs to make it worthwhile.

Can you say, “overkill”?
The writers of this screenplay decided the only way to make this boring, one-joke story work was to fill it with so many gags and gaffs that the audience wouldn’t notice. They didn’t. Most of their eyes glazed over within the first thirty minutes. Imagine elaborating on Dumb and Dumber to the point that you couldn’t stand it.
It is a shameful waste of outstanding comic talent which ends up being buried beneath a pile of “what stupid thing can we throw in next?”. The only interesting, if idiotic, sequences are of the elaborate dead mouse dioramas (which should give you some idea of the caliber of the rest of the film).

This was a very entertaining movie. Paul Rudd and Steve Carell make a great comedic team. I enjoyed the storyline, and the dinner scene is fantastically funny. I would recommend this film.
