Very funny movie, once I got past the whole plot point of making fun of the "extraordinary people" invited to the dinner.
The dinner scene was hilarious; well worth waiting through most of the movie for.
Be sure to stay for the final scenes while the credits roll. Very clever

I love the actors and Paul Rudd is very entertaining, but I guess I just expected to laugh more. The pace of the movie was slow and as much as Steve Carel was trying, he was more annoying than funny. I should have waited for the DVD, like so many others. Movies these days are very poorly done, insulting, and too much about demeaning others.

Steve Carrell is a brilliant comic actor and he has brilliance here in Dinner for Schmucks as well. The problem is, there is too little of Carrell and too much of the unfunny stuff. It is a tired undercurrent of boy and girl together, boy is an idiot, girl leaves, boy changes, girl comes back, happily every after, the End.
That could be forgiven were it just an undercurrent with most of the action taking place on the waves above. But that didn't happen. Too much time was spent on Paul Rudd being a jerk and the movie trying to turn itself into a message.
There is a lot to like about the movie. When Carrell is on, the belly-laughs are there. But sometimes the humor is just simply uncomfortable to watch or not funny at all. A good one to see on DVD but NOT work the cost of admission at a theater.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

3 people in the audience, who apparently don't get out much, were laughing. The rest of us were looking at each other and wondering what they found so funny! Did we just not get it? Yep, we got it and it WASN'T FUNNY. Honestly, Steve Carrell will not put this movie on his resume-he will want to forget he did it. Walked out to get some air, thinking it was almost over and we could kill some time until the rest of the people we were with finished torturing themselves with this movie, and found we had only been watching 45 min!! Seemed like hours. We left, got a refund. There were 6 of us who agreed it was horrible and wanted to leave. Props to Rave/Stonybrook Cinemas in Louisville, Ky, who graciously refunded $75 worth of tickets, so our night wasn't a complete waste. It was only our time we couldn't get back! Trust me, we all have a great sense of humor, and this movie is NOT funny by any stretch of the imagination. I must say though that the actress who played Paul Rudd's girlfriend was adorable. Have never seen her before but hope she gets a better agent! She won't put this on her resume either.

Absolutely brilliant comedy. Hysterical cast, well written. The comedy was strengthened by the fact that the script and characters were able to do effective and timely switches between bust-a-gut laughing comedy and absurd situations on one hand and poignant and sympathetic glimpses at the "idiot" characters who were being lampooned in the movie and by viewers. This was enjoyed by me, my wife, our teenagers, and friends - both genders. Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd were particularly strong. Great movie!

I didn't care too much for one part of the plot, like the main character's girlfriend. That was almost childish the way she couldn't understand why he needed to go to the dinner. But for me,Steve Carell and the black woman pulled the pace of the movie up and that made the movie enjoyable for me.

My husband and I enjoyed this movie, although it definitely was not the best or funniest movie ever. I love Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell and think they worked well together. Jemaine Clement was hilarious and perfect as Kieran, and I was super excited to see him in this movie! Zach Whatshisface was great as well. The plot was predictable at times, but if you don't go in expecting an amazing story and just want to have a good time, I think this movie delivers. We laughed during the movie, on the drive home, and even when we were home. Like I said, not the best movie ever, but I would not say that it's a bad movie at all.

With this cast, this movie should have been better. It takes way too long to get to the actual dinner and then does not deliver some grand finale that would have made the first 7/8's bearable. Considered walking out halfway through; I should have. I gave it 2-stars instead of one because of Zach G.

Sure, it's predictable and over the top. But this is a sweet, competently executed farce, just the way they're supposed to be done.
Not the most brilliant script in the world, but in the hands of a lot of talented comedic actors, the result is damn funny. A few bits fall flat, but most don't. Sort of the inverse of the embarrassingly bad "Grownups."
I looked up Paul Rudd's assistant on IMDB when I got home, because she stole every scene she was in. Turns out her name is Kristen Schaal. Looks like she's done some bit work here and there, and is building a resume. I hope we see a lot more of her in the future; she's hilarious.

My husband and I laughed a lot out loud, but we would only recomend it to a certain audience. It didn't have anything too extremely nasty, but there was definitely some nasty humor that made me and my husband feel a little uncomfortable. Over all we did enjoy ourselves, definitely worth seeing. I do agree the plot is a little out there, but 4 stars for comedy!

The movie premise was a bit weird, but I found myself laughing a LOT. Carrell and Rudd play very well off each other. Carrell plays a great schmuck...
After the movie, my husband and I kept laughing and saying to each other, "Remember that part where....?" and we'd both start laughing. The writing included places for out-loud laughter, but the story idea was not that believable. This is the kind of movie you go to if you feel like laughing and don't care to get too concerned with the plot.

Good movie teenage targeted humor - some adults may enjoy - some may not. Its one of those movies that has comedy for different age levels but is geered more towards male teens. You either love it or hate it.
Steve Carrell is hilarious as usual. Paul Rudd is good as well - a great straight guy for Carrell to work with.

I haven't been to a movie theater in about 15 years, because I prefer watching current movies at home on DVDs. That said, I saw this movie because of a free ticket offer. Not as linear as it appears to be in the previews, yet intelligently funny and surprisingly sweet if quite odd and wrong. The dinner itself is less important than the story of acceptance of yourself and others. Paul Rudd plays straight man to Steve Carell's crazy yet intuitive character. Paul needs to cruelly use his new friend Steve as a clown to make brownie points with his boss. Paul's fiance Stephanie Szostak threatens to walk out on him if he does. But Paul feels he needs to do this to get the promotion that will make Stephanie marry him. And of course it all gets insane and quite funny going from giggles to belly laughs. Its quirky and and presupposes you have a wide knowledge of popular quotations to get the jokes, but if you do its very smart and endearing.
Not everyone will get the humor, but its definitely a hoot!
And oh yes, enjoy the reference to Morgan Freeman. Its just beautiful. Stay through the credits for a last little treat.

I really wanted to like this movie... I like Paul Rudd. It had potential! Really! But it was boring. I did laugh a few times (out loud) but not 2 hrs. worth. I actually left 5 minutes before the end to beat the rush to the bathroom. I didn't care what happened at the end. I had HAD IT. Maybe if it was on cable I would have enjoyed it more. But for the anticipation and the $11.50..... not worth it.
