Very poorly done. The southern accents were not genuine. It did not have the "ring of reality" - seemed too phony. Seemed Tennessee Williams at his nadir.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

My husband and I were compelled to see this as we so highly regard the writing of Tennessee Williams. The movie depicts a particular time and place superbly - Memphis, Tennessee in the 1920's - and the contrast and conflict between its socioeconomic classes. This is not TW's best work but the screenplay is lovely none theless, using the loss of a teardrop diamond earring as a device to reveal the inner workings of the characters. The acting was, on the whole, very good - we were thrilled to see Ann Margret and Ellen Burstyn - and the costumes were gorgeous.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Byrce Dallas Howard is magical in this performance--"I see an Oscar Nonmination for her". Tennessee Williams would be proud of this production.

There may be a good reason this was never produced: it's a kind of tired Tennessee Williams indulging in his well-known clichés. The motivation for the characters is unclear and they are quite exaggerated. Meryl Streep is terrific. Bryce Dallas Howard overplays Fisher Willow. Ann-Margaret is surprising, and Mamie Gummer is excellent. If you like Tennessee Williams and his vision of the south, you may enjoy this movie despite its defects.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I believe the reviewers were so hard on this tale is that they were unfamiliar with a smart young man who came from poverty but could fit in genteel society. Bryce Dallas Howard, in a beautiful portrail, was a woman who socially could run away without being disinherited. Not many people today can relate to this, but the topic was real enough in the 1920s.
This is a fine movie with fine actors and dialogue, a view of an earlier world. Don't let some critic whose view of the world started with the 60s talk you out of seeing a good drama, a piece of theater on the screen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Essential for Williams fans. Less than riveting, but features characters (including its spoiled, reckless, heartbreaking heiress) and dialog that are uniquely, authentically Williams. Such unknown material, full of precious jewels, written during his peak years must be seen by those of us forever under his spell. No doubt he would have refined his script had the film been made in his time. Kudos to the filmmakers for leaving the script untouched by modern adapters. In its authenticity its value lies. Also in some performances: A quietly riveting Ann-Margret, Ellen Burstyn's rousing death-bed scene, Chris Evans brooding in the Paul Newman role (if only!), and as the heroine, a harsh but emotionally honest Bryce Dallas Howard.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
