This movie is so much more than Sean Penn's acting - which is nearly flawless here. Penn brings to life a little known story of a true humanitarian fighting for the rights of ALL people. The movie tells the story of Harvey Milk with a certain truth - through humor and tragedy - and reminds us why it is important to be tolerant.
The screenplay is well-written and the cast is perfect in its portrayal of a confusing and difficult time in American history, and of events that have shaped us. Cheers to Gus Van Sant for taking it on and letting us applaud the efforts of the late Harvey Milk. You will be moved if you see this film.

In what I like to call the "Madonna days" I loathed Sean Penn, Then came "I Am Sam". Stellar performance of life with disabilities. Penn is unbelievably talented, his ability to literally become a role is unfathomable! The movie to me was SLOW and quite boring in many periods. However, the end of the movie makes it worth the wait. I feel movies such as this, or "The Boy in PJ's" all teen's should be forced to see, as they have no clue what life was like prior to them having everything handed over to them on a silver platter. I don't know what we call this generation of kids but I'll quote a friend "The Entitlement Generation." Movies like this will give them an emotional tie to learning what it was like prior to their spoiled existence

I have never been a big fan of Sean Penn, but I have to say, having lived through this piece of San Francisco history and having seen Harvey Milk speak on several occasions, Mr. Penn certainly has given not only the best performance of HIS career, but of any actors career in recent times. I am STILL moved when I think of this movie. True, I'm sure a lot of this has to do with my personal connection to the story being gay and a native San Franciscan, but I defy anyone not being moved in some way by this film. It was particularly exciting to see it in the Castro theater where I had seen Milk speak many times.

I was not aware of this story or this person. I guess I slept through the 70's. This is an amazing story and so well acted. Sean Pean is on top of his game. All the actors Emile Hirsch to Diego Luna did the director and the film proud. It teaches that courage and perseverence can excel and bring about change. Unfortunately it also let's us know that it takes only one crazy person with criminal intent to change the course of history. A triumphant story... A must see. 30,000 marching people strong.

Incredible performance from Sean Penn. Unlike Tom Cruise who is always Tom Cruise, Penn becomes the character and is completely believable. He, Penn, is constantly changing, adapting, convincing in whatever part he is playing and in this movie, one forgets that he is watching a movie instead of a documentary. It is extremely difficult to 'be" somebody else, but Penn carries it off. An Academy Award performance.

This was an excellent movie... it is a wonderful tribute to an incredible individual. it is amazing to see how far we have come and yet still so much more work to do for full equality for all LGBT persons. This movie was excellent. I'm a big fan of Sean Penn and I wanted to see this movie not knowing anything about Harvey Milk. When this story was in the news I was just a kid and not familiar with it even though my mom says it was in the news every day in New York. I came away feeling like I knew Milk and that I had lost a friend. Sean Penn should definitely be nominated for an Oscar. He, Brolin the whole cast was superb!

The movie's pace was great-never a slow moment. I cared about the characters the entire time and found the whole piece to be touching, informative, entertaining and even funny. Great 70's period detail too!

This wonderful, true story is eerily timely. The acting is phenomenal. Sean Penn is subtle and sweet and endearing. The best movie I've seen this year.

Incredible film. Gus Van Sant presents his finest work of art, and Sean Penn delivers not just an Oscar-worthy performance, but a performance worthy of the legacy of the great Harvey Milk. Days later, I am still reeling from this unbelievable film.
