We found this true tale of daring and determination an inspiring counterpoint to the infinite sorrow of the Holocaust. As a descendant of Jews from this same part of Byelorussia, I know that many are indeed that tough and that resourceful. It rings true. The direction and performances were entirely convincing and made me feel I was given a window into that time. Was there some recognizable Hollywood formula in the telling of the tale? Of course. But there's a reason for the formulas. They work.

This is Edward Zwick's strongest film since Glory. Its a previously unknown true story about brothers leading a group of Jews to standup to the Nazis. Their relationship is quite complex and brings out some great acting. The scenes are as powerful as they are frightening with a constant undertone of sadness and hope. Its written with wit and charm. The constant reminder of imminent disaster makes this a truly compelling film.
Forget 007. This film is exactly what Daniel Craig should be making. Liev Schrieber is great.

This movie was compelling on two fronts. First, we have heard so many accounts of Jews being hidden and taken care of by non-Jews, this is the first account on a large scale of Jews hiding in the forest and taking care of themselves. Second, contrary to so many accounts of people walking into cattle cars or gas chambers without fighting, here the Jews were fighting to stay free.
