Excellent movie telling an unknown chapter of history. David Denby of "The New Yorker" was the only major critic who really got it--read his review online. Daniel Craig proves what those of us who knew his work before "Bond" already knew--he is a real and versatile actor. The movie brought tears to my eyes at moments yet was not overplayed or sappy--simply honest.

We went with some trepidation because the critics were not impressed, especially the Wall Street Journal. Well...the critics missed the whole point of the movie. Instead they focused on minutia when this is just a great story about how ordinary people can rise to extraordinary heights. It also shows why Jews have survived for 5800 years despite repeated attempts to eradicate them. At the end of the movie there were cheers and loud applause from the audience. Highly recommended.

Extremely heartwrenching beautiful movie. I took my teenagers so they understand who they are and where they come from. That there are those who still call for genocide against the Jews and it is the right of the Jews to survive.My children know that they can fight back.

This story, offered incredible acting along with a great screenplay. The reviews that I read pretty much say it all... with the exception of one reviewer stating the performances were "conventionally epic in style and tended to overdramatize." This person apparently was not able to grasp the magnitude of what The Bielski Brothers were up against, not to mention the thousands of Jews who were willing to take unimaginable risks for the sake of their freedom from a hateful Nazi presence.

This year there are a lot of options for fans of historical films of the WWII/Holocaust genre. In fact, as I write this, there is a Valkyrie add on my screen. Valkyrie, The Reader, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, among others.
Defiance is different. The story of the brothers standing up against tyranny, and seeing the oppressed become the oppressor is an interesting twist on an important part of human history.
This movie is very human. You will laugh, cry and cheer on the Jewish comrades moving through the forest. You will even be disgusted with the heroes at times. But it's definitely worth checking out.
I would probably rate the film at 4.5 stars, but in the spirit of the holidays I am rounding up.

The movie was everything I'd hope it would be. It was a nice change of pace after all of these Holocaust movies that came out this year to see the Jews fighting back. The director also directed Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, and Glory so I expected good stuff and was not disappointed. Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber both delivered beautifully powerful performances with the help of a great supporting cast. Knowing that it is a true story makes it even more unbelievable. I highly recommend this movie to be seen IN THEATERS which I do not do often. It's always nice to see a movie live up to its trailer, which is rare.

Although I understand the imperative to be visual, it is not even remotely plausible that forest survivors lived in the open. They remained cramped INDOORS. Another jarring detail was the use of nails rather than using craft to fit logs together.
I am not guessing. I've translated a number of survival stories from Yiddish.
Leadership and risk taking was collective, rather than dependent on one strong family. The group was as safe as its weakest link. Survivors were not caricatures, but real and varied. They were not trying to make a theoretical point - they were trying to survive. And many did.
The film wants to be Shindler's List. Good though the film is, at that level, it fails.

Defiance is a highly enjoyable film despite its conventionally epic style and tendency to over dramatize. The performances are fantastic and contribute to several compelling scenes. It was a relief to finally see a movie that doesn't depict the Jews of WWII as helpless victims. The film is also brave enough to depict Jews with a wide rang of reactions to the brutality that they are forced to endure. Through different characters they are portrayed as both virtuous and brutally vengeful, as well as everything between.

Ed Zwick shines some light on the exploits of the Bielski brothers who took no crap from anyone growing up and kept the same attitude during WWII. Anyone challeging thier existance was dealt with harshly and without remorse. As naturalistic events unfolded in the forests of Bellaussia, family and Jews gravitated towards them until by war's end they saved 1237 Jews. They maintained order in their Jerusalem in the Woods by love and force, as needed. Spellbinding, although the real life brutal exploits were a thousandfold, it took the genius of Ed Zwick to condense the Bielskis everyman heroes into an entertaining movie.

Edward Zwick brilliantly captures the feel of ultimate hope and triumph from the very beginning. We are left feeling joy for every person in the forest, for every unlikely hero who dug deep down within themselves for the strength to survive, to live another day. Daniel Craig was fantastic as their leader. His vulnerability wins you over, and his complete devotion to saving each and every one of his people was so heartfelt and exactly what heros are made of. My boyfriend and I found it a joy to watch such a well made movie. Every minute, every shot, reeled you in and never let you go until the last scene, until the last credit. Thank you, thank you Edward Zwick for sealing 2008 with the most excellent of movies.
