Some may debate the quality of the film itself, but there should be no debate on the importance of its message. I.O.U.S.A. provides an easy to understand summary of what arguably is the most important issue facing the United States today - that our future financial obligations will outweigh our collective pocketbook by such a large gap that the United States will face bankruptcy.
Personally, I am confident that our nation will rise to meet the challenges before us and avoid the doomsday scenario. But we can't sit back and wait for someone else to do it for us. We each have a responsibility to get involved. I urge everyone who reads this review to at least get informed on the topic. Take 90 minutes, see this film.

I found this movie very informative. It got the crux of the issue across which is that we have a deficit in leadership and a lack of people participating in our democracy in holding them accountable. I think everyone can agree change needs to occur in our government but this movie gives people easy to understand information about how important it is to do it now and how it needs to come from the people as our leaders have shown incapable of making change.

IOUSA provides a good picture of economic needs and questionable leadership.
Surprisingly, no one suggested adoptng a single payer health care option to replace our wasteful health insurance payment system; probably because that needed correction will hurt many American workers and investors.
Paying only for what you can afford" is a "no brainer," if legislators will also cut the many "special interest protections" lobbied into Federal law.
Simplfying and redesigning our tax laws and cutting out loopholes will create pain for "special interests", but if enough people benefit, I hope it would create a system of web-based political donations by voters.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

There was no way this topic was every going to be "Mama Mia!" It's not a fun movie, though it is carbonated with a spritz of Jon Stewart and Saturday Night Live. But it is an important film, and it is its gravity that keeps one in orbit, even as one wonders when it will be over. It could have used a bracing round of editing to tighten it up, sharpen its focus. But it is rightly considered the "Inconvenient Truth" of the deficit crisis. It is important to our future as a nation in the way that climate change is important to our future as a species.

Every person 13-130 years old needs to see this movie! This is not a "feel-good" movie; there is no "spoonful of sugar to help this medicine go down". Rather, it's a bad-tasting medicine that this Country HAS to take soon to protect our National fiscal health! Enlightening and frightening at the same time - particularly for our kids and grandkids' futures. If you care about anything other than yourselves and "living for the moment", see this film!

One complant would be with the movies request to start saving. Only brefly mentioning that what money we do save should hold it's value.

This is just the wake-up call that our nation needs. We can't keep increasing government program spending while cutting taxes at the same time.
The movie doesn't get into detail about solutions, but if this movie gets enough people to stand up and say that it's important to have a balanced budget and reduce the national debt, we'll find a way to get ourselves out of this mess.

This is an uneven documentary on the enormous challenges of our overspending and underinvesting. We MUST come to terms with this and with the entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security before they destroy us financially. Kudos to Pete Peterson and the Agora folks for bringing this to us. Let's hope enough of us are willing to struggle with these issues before they destroy our wonderful nation with its blessings of freedom and abundance.
It would be good to follow up with more about the potential solutions and how difficult it will be to get a political consensus to make these necessary but tough choices!

There were many messages in the film, but I wish it were required viewing for all politicians. I want to have a forum between the two presidential candidates the day after they see it. Heck, I would love to see a 3rd candidate with the fiscal muscle and know-how it will take to put this country back in to balance.
Should be shown in all schools, public television, and for sure, put it into general theatre publication. The more people see it, the better we can shape future policy decisions.

The film has a clear message about the national economy: the inmates are in charge of the asylum, and matters will become worse until responsible, sane adults willing to sacrifice their political careers take charge.  The theses that the country is (a) overspending, (b) running unacceptable deficits in several sectors, and (c) racing madly toward a financial cliff were well presented and supported.  The film is an accountant's view of the future: yet another linear extrapolation of current trends in a nonlinear world, but still an important film and required viewing by everyone concerned with the immediate threats to the national economy.

I went in braced for a neo-con screed, and was impressed by the overall non-partisan nature of the (very disturbing) information and how it was presented.
The overall message is clear: We all need to pay very close attention to this issue, not just in an election year, but from this point forward until our elected officials (of all flavors) are held accountable for doing their jobs.
I will purchase a copy of this movie when it's out on DVD, to share with friends, as a frequent reminder of my civic responsibility, and to inform my daily choices. Don't miss it!!!

The scary bit was great, but much of the time spent watching people riding in cars should have been spent talking about how much debt is created not just to buy things that people can't afford, but buying things that nobody needs. See The Story of Stuff.
NOBODY in the discussion panel even mentioned the FairTax bill. How fascist can one group be that the only solutions they seem to have always promote more corporate-government growth?

Unlike past financial crises which have been addressed to some degree, this one may continue to worsen. The American population is increasingly uninformed, selfish, unpatriotic and intensely partisan. National savings rates, educational ranking as evidenced by test scores and capital formation for the production of tangible goods continue to dramatically decline in the face increasingly intense global competition and political instability. Wall Street has prospered and is bailed out for unethical, predatory practices while the middle class continues to be squeezed.
Everyone needs to be more aware of what is at stake, and we should urge all of our friends to attend I.O.U.S.A.

I was very excited to see this movie as I bought tickets online and looked forward to this event all day. The movie was fantastic --- a realistic, hard core reality check --minus the usual government sugar coating that we usually see. My heart raced with fear during most of it --- the only problem I saw is that there was only a handful of people who watched it -- meanwhile there was a packed theater next door for the cartoon adventure movie. Put down the numbing out movies America - this is real life and a glipse of our very near future.

The issues are critically serious and must be addressed if our grandchildren are to have quality lives. I worry that not addressing these issues makes us more at risk for internal violence, revolution, and inter-state war. For me the graphs and narrative went far too fast. I would have wanted more time to process each point. Furthermore, I would have liked a handout that summarizes the points made.

An excellent presentation of the most serious issue facing the USA. One could almost see our country slipping from the wealthiest, strongest country in the world to a third tier nation dependent on others who own us.
Would have preferred more focus on the failures of the Congress. Some may assume the film 's comments on the need for leadership referred to the current president , although many administrations and members of Congress made mighty contributions to the mess we are in. Of course the biggest culprits are you and me, the voters that don't care enough to change.

There is now doubt that this movie has inspired me to want to educate the younger generation about fiscal responsibility. How has such a rich nation turned into this? This movie was terrific. It should be a requirement for all high schools and colleges to play this movie to educate the youth of America. Then to start a movement to require that in this democracy we demand that our government understand the needs of the generations to come and how to BALANCE a budget.

A great documentary depicting the truth about the way our nations monetary system is
handled, which is absolutely hypocritical.
It explains through easy to understand language and graphics how and why the
U.S has evolved into a nation that has no
money. It certainly is a wake up call to all
Americans who enjoy the freedoms we
now know to enjoy. The unfortunate scary
part is our so called controlled media are
not willing to inform the public of our out
of control financial crisis. The information
throughout this documentary should be
spread like the plague. I recommend
every American to take an 1 1/2 hour of
their time to see the movie. Its a truthful
well documented, highly educational,
eye opening movie that is a must see.

IOUSA reminds Americans that we have allowed - if not consciously encouraged - the politicians who work for us to dig a financial hole that will become a serious burden for younger generations. Facts are presented clearly and creatively. If you are comfortable taking what you can while you can, don't see this movie, because you - not "they" - are the target of its fiscal wake up call.

Very informative, but American's just don't get it. Our economic crisis is way over the top for most people to comprehend, this movie explains it very well. Our schools should be broadcasting this in every classroom across the nation so that our children can start to feel and realize what their reality will be, if nothing is done. During the round table discussion, Warren Buffet was the only one up there feeding more B.S. to us. On one rebuttal David became infuriated over the pie in the sky outlook that was being discussed. I feel Warren has too much at stake to feed us the truth and Walker knew what Buffet was doing. David Walker should be running for president. GREAT MOVIE. A MUST SEE.

This movie is a must see for every person in this country to learn about the fiscal disaster that we face, which is significantly worse than even the movie portrays. Much of the movie is made while the credit crisis remains in its infancy which could cause the deficit to soar to $13-15 trillion overnight, certainly adding salt to the wounds of trying to pay for medicare and SS in the future. I would have given the movie 5 stars had it illustrated the impact of the current credit crunch along with declining GDP.
