I took my 6th grade daughter to this movie and we both loved it. It was a very powerful movie and one which allowed us to discuss further moral and ethical issues like euthenasia, abortion and genetic engineering which the theory of natural selection lends itself to.
People who have slammed this movie as being propaganda are just part of the problem which Mr. Stein is clearly illustrating exists in this country. There is a wall in place in which new ideas and new science, that challenges the world view of the dominant culture and media in this country, is put down, ridiculed and dismissed. Those who express opposing thought are labeled as bigots, fundamentalists, and kooks. We are not talking about teaching Creationism in schools, but allowing the inclusion of Intelligent Design as a viable alternative theory, which is something far different. If you don't think science is racing toward the discovery of an intelligent designer being responsible for life on this planet, do some reading on the research being done on the "God Particle" in physics.
I challenge you to watch this film and then research Darwin's theories yourselves. Go online, read what he actually wrote and decide for yourself. Personally, I find that in the "Descent of Man" there are many troubling and completely ridiculous aspects of his "theory". And that's all it is, a theory. Why is this accepted as scientific fact? It's laughable to read that the morality of the species of Man developed through natural selection. Pity, remorse, self-sacrifice, compassion, guilt - all these attributes and more - Darwin explains developed from tribal ape communities through natural selection. Come on, this strains credulity.
Ben Stein should be applauded for bringing this to the forefront. Bravo, Mr. Stein. This is an important film. Go see it with an open mind. Don't be intellectually lazy, research it for yourself and make your own decisions.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The style of the film was somewhat odd. Using a standard documentary technique, with the insertion of clips that were plainly for parody or satire, made the piece difficult to take seriously. However, the idea that the establishment in the science or medical fields does not want there to be debate or research is made plausible by Mr. Stein's film. Also, the reasons many of the folks gave as motivation for beliefs or actions on both sides was quite revealing and thought provoking. Many of the folks interviewed plainly had strong personal, political or social agendas to advance that had very little to do with science. That aspect seemed to be at the heart of a spirited discussion our family had afterward. Probably worth seeing once, as it did make for a great discussion about a variety of topics including group dynamics, entrenched bureaucracies, and human motivation. Trying to understand Mr. Stein's motivation in even making the film was certainly a big part of the conversation.

As an entertainment factor, this movie failed, but as a documentary, I thought it was well done. I got that the references to Hitler and the Holocaust were meant to remind us of what could happen if the truth is stifled. Whether you agree or disagree with the Intelligent Design theory, it should still be allowed as an alternative to evolution. Besides, what difference does it make how we all got here?

This movie is not about evolution vs. creationism. No, really. It has nothing to do with it. This is simply about people with differing views being silenced. Having gone to college myself, this has been observable. The rule is simple: if you disagree with evolution or even would like some questions answered about it, you can expect to come under harsh criticism at best. At worst, you fail (as a student) or lose your job (as a teacher). This move addresses these issues. Although it is clear that Ben is a creationist, he doesn't let that cloud his research. He follows proper procedure the whole way through.
As far as quality goes, this movie does an excellent job. Along with the raw research, Ben throws in a small amount of comedy. I'm not sure this helps his message but it does make the movie easier to watch. Final words: this is well executed, well documented, and entertaining. As far as documentaries go, you won't find much that's better.

At the end of the movie I had to take a moment to breath. I was speechless. All I could do was absorb the truth that was exposed and silently cheer the brilliant Ben Stein. Kudos to Mr. Stein, and the intelligent academiens who were expelled for seeking and admitting knowledge. If you arn't afraid to admit that there are other truths and that it goes beyond what is the popular view, admitting that science has always been about overcoming barriers, and that science has become a political power hungry whirlwind of scientific trash, then you have been waiting for this documentary.

This film is simply shameful. It's bad enough that it peddles radical misconceptions about the nature of evolutionary theory and the scientific viability of the "alternative" Intelligent Design approach. Stein acts as though the scientific community has simply ignored the Intelligent Design movement, when in fact countless articles in countless peer reviewed journals have soundly dissected and dismantled it.
The worst part of the film is the use of the Holocaust as anti-evolution propaganda. Mr. Stein, I expected better. Stein uses selective quoting to make it seem as if Darwin himself supported eugenics and genocide. One only need read the next few sentences PAST the quote Stein uses to see that in fact Darwin REJECTED such views, arguing that they were in conflict with basic human care and compassion - in Darwin's view the most noble human traits.
It is truly a pity to think of how many will be mislead by Stein's lies....

I've always been a big fan of Ben Stein and greatly admire his intellect but this so called documentary showed a great lack of any intellegence. I found it interresting that he did not concentrate on any of the points of Iintellegent Design vs. Evolution, but rather presented it as a freedom of speech issue. He took a few disgruntled employees and used that as a springboard into his conspiracy theory that somehow "Big Science" was preventing any discussion of ID and squelching anyone that tries to present this point of view. This is utter nonsence. There is no "Boss" of science. There is no single authority. The people that lost their jobs failed to demonstrate any experimental data to support their hypothesis. The common thread among ID proponants is "since this is so complex it must have had a designer" is not science. There is no experimental data, no predictions, no theory. Just "prove it isn't so" statements that defy logic.
There are many highly religous evolution biologists that have strong faith and still have no issue with Darwinian evolution. Stein did not seek our or interview any of them and instead used one of the most outspoken and controversial athiests as his foil.
The cheap trick of showing the evils of "Darwinism" (there is no such word by the way. Ism's are beliefs - Catholicism, Prostistantism, Budism, Hinduism etc.) by using Hitler and how he used Darwin to justify his actions. History is full of evil people using the words of others to justify their deeds. The Bible has been used to justify slavery, genocide, incest and murder. Even the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" was used by Charles Manson as his inspiration. It is a lot of nothing and, other than being self serving, does not promote the cause of free speech that Stein claims to be promoting.
There is no lack of free speech in science. ID has failed repeatedly to present even one piece of experimental data to support it's claims. In a Science classroom evidence is everything. There are reams and reams of data to support Darwinian evolution and nothing but belief to support ID. One of the major tenents in science is that it can be falsified. That is evolution can be proven wrong. All it takes is verifiable experimentation or solid evidence to the contrary. If the ID people have this they should bring it on. A Nobel prize is waiting for them.

Ben Stein’s movie/documentary goes right to the point. How many of our scientific theories of the past have given way to new and compelling evidence over a period of time? Ben Stein’s case for academic freedom, particularly with reference to naturalistic Darwinian evolutionary theory is absolutely critical for the integrity of the scientific enterprise. The opportunity to critique and challenge naturalistic Darwinism in civil, rational discourse in light of a growing body of rather compelling, contemporary, scientific evidence pointing to design ought to be inviolable. It is rather frustrating that whenever there is the suggestion that such evidence points to design, well-qualified scientists find themselves “expelled” from the opportunity to debate, teach, and publish their arguments without those arguments being dismissed under the label of “religion.” One has but to read the publications of men like Michael Behe, William Dembski, Jonathan Wells, Stephen Meyer, and Guillermo Gonzalez with Jay Wesley Richards – to name but a few – to see that their works are scholarly, scientific, and subject to review and scientific critique, and invite the same. To summarily dismiss them as “religion” because they suggest that the observed evidence points to “design” unveils the underlying naturalistic philosophical commitment of many Darwinian evolutionists who choose to define science in terms that disallow even the possibility that the evidence might point beyond itself to a designer. But once one realizes that it is the naturalistic philosophical commitment that refuses to allow civil debate and critique, then he needs to cry “Let the debate proceed!” And that is what Ben Stein has done.

This movie is a much needed in todays culture. The scientists that spread the "evolution gospel" are silencing those who would present other views. People need to understand that this isn't Science VS. Religion. I.D. and evolution are both religious and it takes faith to believe in them both. It takes far more faith to believe in evolution. The problem is evolution is tax supported, I.D. is not. These scientists are quick to believe aliens could have deposited the necessary ingredients to make life here on Earth rather than that God made it just like he said in Genesis because they have no proof for thier theory. The Bible also says, "the fool in his heart has said there is no God." Well done Ben Stein and Company for making this film. I hope there is a sequel.

I enjoyed the movie very much. For the people who claim it's simply creationist propaganda you obviously were not paying attention. The theory in discussion was Intelligent Design, NOT creationism. They purposefully stated this over and over. Almost every ID scientist they interviewed constantly reiterated that they were not creationists at all. Even the scientist at the end who so vehemently denied the idea of ID said that someone, something must have seeded life on this earth. They weren't even trying to force the idea that this was what happened on people, they just wanted an equal opportunity to research a theory. Darwinism is a theory, evolution is a theory, ID is a theory, why can't all sides of the argument be researched? If it is indeed a baseless argument as Darwinists claim, why are they so afraid of people learning about it? Why are they so quick to claim any ID theory is just a creationist fairytale? They would rather attack their opponents by name calling then by challenging them with real science. America is about freedom. All theories with adequate evidence should be researched with absolute freedom. If the powers that be are going to suppress any idea they don't agree with then we should be compared to Hitler's Regime. As to planned p. being connected to eugenist, try searching for planned p. videos. A man called several different Planned P. offices offering to donate money, with the stipulation that it was only to be used to kill African American babies. Planned P. was ecstatic about it. They offer abortion coupons to minorities, doctors coerce women who may or may not be carrying handicapped babies to kill them. When did we decide who deserved life and who didn't? Where is the line drawn? Darwinists teach us that only the strong should be allowed to survive and reproduce, should we sterilize the obese, the asthmatic, people who have a family history of Alzheimer's? The dehumanization of our times is so disheartening. I only hope this movie brings about a change.

The movie gets to the point I think most of us have known all along. There is no reason not to discuss ID in the classroom: the complexity of the cell, as we know today, makes the Darwinist theory of spontaneous life from primordial soup seem very unlikely; the cell is a microscopic factory, not a sack of goo, as Darwin supposed. In much the same way a rational person would look at a physical manufacturing plant and realize someone designed, built and put people and procedures in place to run the plant, so too the complexity of the cell leads one to consider it as a well-designed factory that runs according to certain rules. The only reason it cannot be considered is that points to a creator. These guys and gals (Scott, Dawkins, etc.) have a lot riding on keeping ID away from the view of rational people. Their work and their belief system would be questioned, and when you have no firm base to stand on, questions are dangerous things. Therefore, expell the infidels. Thank you Ben, for this documentary. It was well done, and shows the beliefs and to a certain extent, the scientific, religious and moral consequences of both sides.

I don't usually go to documentaries because I usually like entertaining movies with a plot. This movie was done very well & Ben Stein made it entertaining & held my attention completely. I think it was very fair at presenting both sides of this argument. It was very interesting to see that the Darwinists can't say how the earth got started. I would have liked to see more discussion of creationism but maybe next movie. I will definitely recommed this movie to anyone I know.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It is refreshing to hear scientific views on human origins that have not been censored by those under the influence, fear, and blind faith of Humanism.

A movie that asks the musical question, is it okay for scientists to ask any question and pursue any line of inquiry even if it means considering including the role of an intelligent designer in the universe. The answer of science is "no" that is, if you mean the designer is God. Now, if you mean the designer is an alien or something--now that's just science! This movie pokes fun at atheistic scientists and their fundamentalistic faith in themselves and their methods. Thanks Ben Stein you made Richard Dawkins look like the whacko he really is! "...a little bit of a lizard" was the best line in the movie!

Expelled claims to be a documentary, but is in reality, a creationist propaganda piece. There is literally no science in this film, only crudely constructed associations of modern scientists with Hitler, using a worn and dishonest overlay of old film footage showing German stormtroopers marching in the streets while Stein laments the expulsion of a few ID scientists with an ax to grind. To say this is a dishonest film would be a gross understatement. Ben's poster-boy for the film's central theme (that scientists are fired and careers ruined by "Big Science" because they advocate intelligent design) is Richard Sternberg. Sternberg was an unpaid Research Associate for the Smithsonian in 2004. He peer-reviewed a controversial paper on the "Cambrian Explosion" himself, without the assistance of an associate editor, bypassing the standard practice there. Sternberg had given his resignation six months before the paper was published. The paper was later found to be without merit and was retracted. Even after his duplicity, his position was extended in 2006, though Sternberg never reported to work. The secondary theme of the film is that intelligent design should be allowed to present evidence to the scientific community. In fact, the scientific community has been asking proponents of ID for years for this very same evidence, or even a statement of intelligent design theory. Both Dembski and Behe have written a few books concerning "thought experiments" - "explanitory filters" and "irreducible complexity", meant to give evidence for ID, but no known research has been done, even with the support of the Discovery Institute, of which they are both Fellowes. The extent of ID research has been to insert religion into what are considered "gaps" in evolutionary theory, and in essence, to argue from incredulity, that if one doesn't know, or can't understand the current science, God did it. But the most disingenuous element was to see Ben Stein, a Jew, use the Holocaust for his own ideological agenda, for a few pieces of silver. For Ben to wander the now weedy fields of Dachau, holding his face in his best attempt at despair, is disgusting at it's very core, and the ultimate insult to those who lost family during one of the most nauseating events in human history. For all of the above, the film is an insult to those who know better, and dishonest trickery to those who don't. Except for a few Christian blogs, the reviews from all major sources have been scathing. Financially, the movie did poorly over it's initial weekend, and will no doubt enjoy a deserving, rapid, lonely demise.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This is pure propaganda disguised as serious discussion. But anyone with a high school science education should be able to see it for what it is. Stein doesn't even seem to able to grasp the concept evolution and makes a complete fool of himself with this film. Is he really that stupid or is this some sort of publicity stunt.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I took my entire family. Even the younger ones that could not totally understand it had questions we could discuss as a family. This is a must see movie for everyone. We all assume that scientists are after the truth but this movie proves otherwise. I won't tell you more but we are losing our freedom of speech and anyone that doesn't realize that is not paying attention or just doesn't care.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I thought the movie was extremely well done and offered some viewpoints that we don't seem to be allowed to hear much. I'm thankful Ben Stein had the courage to delve into this issue and then bring it to the attention of the public.

The movie does an excellent job discussing the intellectual bias afforded evolution. Questions why alternate hypothesis cannot be discussed or even entertained for consideration. Discusses an individual's 'worldview' and suggests their might be certain prior assumptions that lead to the scientific conclusions of evolutionists. Overall a very good introduction to the ongoing intellectual debate of scientific naturalism and its underlying deistic or atheistic assumptions. The movie is a collection of interviews of various scientists, mathematicians and philosophers who share their opinions on this great debate that confronts our society.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
