I think visually this movie was terrific. As far as it being engrossing and understandable story-telling - not so good. If you have read the book, and read it somewhat recently, you can follow the film, but I think that if you don't know the book, you will be not be able to follow the plot.
It seems like the script writer took the highlights of the book and glued those together to form a film without using the nuanced parts of the story that tie the highlights together to make the story make sense.
In all fairness, I did not see the first six films - perhaps they were all done this way? I have read the book series twice and am a fan of that.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I have never used this word when describing the HP universe...but this movie was simply boring!
As a fan of the HP books and movies, I have always enjoyed how faithful the movies have been to the book. I need to go back and re-read Deathly Hallows because I simply can't recall so many pointless, convoluted moments that have little connection to the main plot. The movie would have been much more cohesive, fun ride if they had cut out about 30 minutes of Harry, Hermione or Ron brooding for affect. Sadly, that's not an exagerration. I was disappointed in the last movie and this one continues the trend. I'm ready for the HP series to be mercifully over.

The movie stayed very true to the book and had a great stopping point. About the only "bad" thing I can say about the movie is that it would completely lose first-time Harry Potter moviegoers, but really- are there any of those left? lol I hope they release Part 1 and Part 2 together on DVD as you will definitely need both to complete the story- can't wait until July!

This Harry Potter is by far the one with the most action. I appreciate that this is only part one, because to turn the entire 7th book into a 2hr movie would be terrible. This part makes hope seem lost, which is exactly the feeling I got from the first half of the book. Very well adapted with cutting-edge graphics. Great job!

This was a good movie.
Some interesting back stories particularly how the subtitle "Deathly Hallows" came to be.
The drag was that came in the last 45 mins of the movie :-P
The movie could have been lighter by 30-40 minutes and would have been just fine. My teens and their friend disagreed with me on that but I was texting my wife (she wasn't interested in seeing it) during those last 45 minutes telling her that the movie was a real snoozer.
Yes... I know I shouldn't have been texting while at the movie but it was my way of trying to avoid nodding off which I felt myself doing a couple/few times when there were lags in the action and there were too many lags :-P
But since my kids and their friend liked it...it was worth a few winks and heavy eyelids :-)
Ahhhh...no; we went to a 2pm showing so it wasn't late and I wasn't tired...the movie was just 20% longer than it needed to be.
With all of that said as a parent...I would just be prepared to struggle about 1hr 45mins into the movie. Have some popcorn or do something to keep yourself alert for about 30 minute of the scene in the woods (the hollows) when the main characters are camping out and "finding themselves."
That part is a real snoozer.... (I was wishing I had my iPad that I left in the car; I could have read some news or done something else productive).
My 14 year old said that part of the movie was good...it was all the "emotion" and it was needed to round out the movie. Well I guess since her perspective was over 30 years ago for me...it came across as corny and a drag on the movie (for me).
If you find yourself in a similar place you could just go ahead and catch a few zees if you're out of popcorn or candy and no iPad :-) It would also be a good time for a rest room break... you won't miss a thing.
But if you do decide to get some shuteye do have your kid give you a nudge when the back story about how the "Deadly Hollows" came to be. That part is a great little animated story.
It sets up Part 2 for the movie which I am looking forward to seeing in the Spring of 2011 because I want to see how the end of Part 1 starts in Part 2. Moreover "it is about time" to wrap up the Harry Potter movie series.
The cute hapless kids from years ago are now like freshman college age so the charm of fumbling innocence has worn off. It is time to be grown-up wizards and do whatever it is that grown-ups with magic wands do :-)

This one was definitely better than the last one. I like how they have taken a different route with it, and made it more dark and suspenseful. It is keyed more torwards everyone now, instead of just children. They have made it more grown up, and mature, so that it peaks the interests of those young, and old.

I went in having read just one review, that this movie didn't quite have the foward movement of the previous films. I won't spoil and say what it DID have, but it was mesmerizing to me as a Harry Potter movie fan; and very befitting the magical environment.
When the magic was used, it wowed. The twists, and even nuance of the 3 main character's expressions in some scenes came across as almost an electric current, or more accurately, "Did you see that? Did I just see that?"
There are not many times I can report that a movie had no slow areas. This one IS one of those times. I found myself checking my watch only at 1:30 and 2:30 when it was within 2 minutes of the end. The first was because we were out of popcorn.. AGAIN.

Admittedly I have never read any of the Harry Potter books. With that said, I found this movie to be very well produced and very enjoyable. The special effects were superb! One particular part really 'got me' ! I recommend it to anyone but it would help to have an avid HP reader at your side (as I did).

Closely followed the book. They ended this half just about where I had guessed. If you have read the books or watched the prior movies you should be able to follow the story, but it is just the first half. I am looking forward to the second half, but I will be sad to see it all end.

For fans of the Harry Potter book series, you'll know that book seven moves fairly slowly in the first half of the book -- All of he action is in the last 1/4 of the book.
Well, this movis is all about the set up for the last movie. This movie "drags" along at a very slow pace. Even those portions of the first half of the seventh novel that were exciting were given short shrift in this movie.
I was disappointed with this movie.
I felt as though the producers could have done a three hour movie of the seventh book that was outstanding -- instead, the producers are milking it by making the seventh book into two movies. I can only hope that the second half of the movie that comes out in July, 2011 vindicates this one.

This was the best Harry Potter movie to date. It is on a whole new level than all the other movies. From the acting to the cinematography, everything about it was fantastic. It was fairly true to the book - as close as these movies can come to the book. It was a two and a half hour long movie that felt so short. Warning: there are scenes that are scary and graphic, so if your child is younger than 13 or easily disturbed, I would highly discourage them from seeing it.

Really put the trio's friendship and dedication back in the forefront. Great continuity with the book. Slower than some would like, but really builds up well to the final movie. Funny and touching, exciting and poignant. Ends at a good spot so that you know part II will be action-packed.

The movie was good even though it seemed strength out, porting from one location to another but it did follow the book. I think they could have shorten these scenes in the woods and on mountain tops looking for the answers and spent more time with action scenes as at the end of part one. I noticed people in the theater were surprised at the ending. It was what I expected being part I of a two Part moving.

An elaboration on that equation:
‎2.5 hours - .5 hours of filler + 1 hour of remaining story = 1 wholly satisfying Deathly Hallows experience shorter than a Lord of the Rings movie. While beautifully shot and not without its moments, Deathly Hallows by no means needed to be divided into two films. The middle section of the movie certainly could have been trimmed, and very little key events remain in the story to be told
(minor spoiler alert):
--dragon
--Hogwarts
--epilogue
I may change my mind when I see how they tackle Part 2, but I can't shake the feeling of a shallow desire to milk this franchise for as much money at possible at the expense of having a lean, well-told story. Lord of the Rings remains the bar for a good story, well told, best honoring the source material.

"The Deathly Hallows Part I" was true to form of all the HP movies; important details were overlooked (i.e. the relationship with Kreecher) and exposition was missing from quite a few scenes late in the film, seemingly for the sake of special effects. If you are interested in a fun movie, this is for you. If you want an accurate novel to screen experience, you may be slightly disappointed.
