This is one of the best of the HP movies (I thought only #3 was better), and as an adaptation of the book is faithful and manages to distill it down to movie size without losing the power and imagery of the book. It is suitably dark (the cinematography is supurb in its bleakness) , the music is subdued but well done, and the screenplay and the acting brings it to the level of intensity the books had.
Are there things missing? Yes, without spoiling anything, I was a bit sorry that there isn't more about dumbledore's background that you see in the book, especially the tabloid attack on him (though that may be in part II, I have no way of knowing).
The movie is really about the three main leads, and they have grown into the roles literally and figuratively, and there is not a missed beat among them. There is nothing childish about their performances, and they have you believing this is real, not an easy thing with myself. And it is 2 hours 30 minutes yet it doesn't feel that long, it kept me into it until the very end.
One warning, there isn't a lot of lightness or humor in this (which is like the book), anyone expecting any sign of the gee whiz kiddie kind of thing is going to be disappointed, and I would be very careful about taking kids to this one who are younger then 11 or 12 (the pg13 is spot on IMO), make sure they have a tolerance for heavier stuff as this is not disneyfied in the least, unlike the first couple of movies.

Didn't quite hit it out of the park this time, but very close. The decision to split this last book was the only correct way of doing this.
I believe this was the best filming job of all the movies. But they could have spent less time showing them in seclusion on the mountain tops and used that to further the background story.
This is definitely not for anyone that has not read the book.
Can't wait for part 2.

The plot jumps a bit with some awkward transitions. Great photography and dialogue (though understanding the English accent was impossible at times). I would definitely recommend this movie.

After watching the latest Harry Potter movie I was utterly convinced that the decision to split the last book in two was a good one. There is so much explanning to do to wrap up the series it would have been very hard to adapt the last book to the screen in one movie and make sense of it all. Also, the young actors who portray the main characters have definitely matured and their
acting show how far their acting skills have evolved. The pace reflects the mood in the book, it's slow and introspective. Not a lot of action in this movie but if you read the books you know this part remains faithful to its source. I highly recommend this movie to all Harry Potter book lovers. For those who skipped the books beware you might find it too slow!

I thought that movie #7 was a HUGE improvement from movie #6 {and #5, for that matter}. I still had major issues, though.
SMALL SPOILERS ALERT
I hate that the voice of Doby was changed. The new voice didn't fit the character, and it really took away from the emotion of his scenes for me.
I think that Helena Bonham Carter did a better job in this movie, but still think she's generally awful and makes a terrible Bellatrix LeStrange.
The "nudity" in the locket scene didn't bother me for the sake of nudity, but it was really surprising, and really not necessary to the point of the scene.
I felt like nothing was explained for the audiences who haven't read the books. I mean, I remember everything from the books, but I saw the movie with someone who hasn't read any of the books, and I really felt like the movie was confusing to them.
The flow wasn't smooth, the feeling of the book was lacking, and some moments were just plain awkward. Generally, the bits of the book that were taken out should have been explained better so that the average moviegoer understood what was going on.
Despite all of this, I really, REALLY enjoyed the movie. I feel like the kids acting stepped up a notch, and the entire experience was a great one!

Conveying 150 pages of a book, closing gaps from the previous 6 books and depicting emotion visually - they did a great job translating it to the screen. Although they condensed in a couple places to help move the story along (ie. 3 months in the Black house devising a way to get into the Ministry of Magic was skipped - losing the story line with Creature), it was an excellent job for a 2 and a half hour movie. Also they didn't leave the cliff-hanger so loose that you felt jipped at the end, but still enough to draw you back for the finale.
Although faded in color, it wasn't as dark visually as the previous few and I could actually see what was going on. They also kept more of the humor that 's in the book unlike the previous few films. The hand-held camera effect was a little disorienting, but not completely overused as in so many action films today. I could have done without the naked makeout session with the smokey Hermione and Harry vision (I believe in the book is was just a kiss), but overall an excellent 2 and a half hours spent.
Looking forward to the final one.

My family and I feel this is the best of the Harry Potter series. The actors have all matured and gave good performances. Of course, the movies never completely compare to the books, but this was a good adaptation. We can't wait until the last one comes out!

Very intense scenes for small children. Lots of close-ups. This movie is amazing with lots of "big screen" scenes that have to be seen in a movie theater. Lots of action, but always interesting personal scenes. A great family movie if you have children 10 or older.

Excellent Potter movie. The actors did very well to express the feelings which took tens of pages in the book to show. Yes, the movie is dark and slow but the book was ever so much more. I agree with other raters that the scene with Ron destroying the locket went overboard with the nudity - totally unnecessary.
Still, however, an entire flow from the book is lacking in the movie - Harry's conflict between searching for the Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows. The hallows were Dumbledore's weakness but they are Harry's strength because he is able to overcome the desire to obtain them. With that, he is able to use them in his meeting with Voldemort. Rowling wrote much in book 7 to make this point which is missing in the movie.
I'm hoping that this will come out in Part II. If not, then Yate's screenplay will be as poorly written as that for Books 4 & 6.

Huge fan of Harry Potter; got the last one signed by Rowling herself. As for the part 1; best so far only a slight disappointment since growing up watching the movies from the 1st movie to present and now its the end next year, makes me want to stall seeing the last one until its on T.V rather the theater.

One of the best set-up films I've ever seen. -I could have easily sat and continued to watch for another 3 hours to finish the story. The stopping point was perfect. I cannot wait to see it unfold. I will miss this film series. Thank goodness for the books and DVDs/downloads. What an incredible story from start to finish.

This was a nice change from the past repetitive magic school classes and sports games; the kids have grown up and can now demonstrate what they've learned. It was a bit slower at times but was overall enjoyable. It leaves you in suspense so that you are anxious to see the last one.

Mostly boring, very slow and appeared to have a lot of "filler" material -- the movie should have had the slow "filler" material removed and the next movie combined with it to make ONE movie. I doubt will I go see the next movie nor even purchase the Blu-rays of these two movies to complete the collection.

I'm not usually a HP fan, and I went with my bf, open to the movie and stuff. (I'd only seen Half-Blood Prince) and it was good so I was somewhat excited for this movie. I don't regret it at ALL, it was an AMAZINGGGGG movie. It was funny, it had all the elements of a great movie---action, humor, emotion, and of course a bit of romance---not to mention the magic. It was great, I totally recommend it!!!

I liked this movie. However there were parts that they choose to spend time on that I felt were not as important and the time could have been been spent better developing the plot or explaining the plot in other areas. The movie it's self was well done. I just felt if I hadn't read the book I may have been lost.

The acting is better than your average hollywood movie, keeping with the English stage tradition. The special effects are awesome and the movie will spook you at times. The story line is intriuging, filled with symbolism and subplots that will have you contemplating the movie for a long time after you see it. Moments of comedy slice up the serious nature of the plot and the scenery is just gorgeous! The costumes are fantastic, super well done and whimsical - you may find yourself copying the trend. Five stars.

It was very entertaining and exciting. I can't wait until part 2 comes to the theatre. I couldn't believe we had sat there for 2hr 15 mins it seemed so short of a time to watch. I would recommend to all the followers of Harry potter to go and watch. a++++

"The Deathly Hallows" was well worth the wait to see it. The tone of the movie stayed very true to the book, and the ending scene was perfect to set up the conclusion of the series. The only thing I could have done without is the imaginary scene with Ron fantasizing about his worst nightmare. I don't want to spoil it, but the end of it was definitely unnecessary, and not something I felt was in the book in that manner. Otherwise, it was an excellent film, and I can't wait to see part 2!!!
