We went to see this movie on 7/18 and before the credits were over wanted to see it again. The theatre was full of people laughing, singing and clapping throughout the movie. Our friends saw it on Broadway and thought the movie version was so much better. I think Meryl Streep and the rest of the cast and crew did an incredible job. It was fantastic. Before I got to the car I had already decided that when it came out on DVD I was going to buy it!!!

I saw the movie with my best friend. We had so much fun! Haven't had that much fun at a movie in a long time. The scenery is fantastic. Definately a must see on the big screen. It's true, Pierce Brosnan can't sing but he's fantastic anyway. Meryl Streep is always incredible but the stand out actor in this was Julie Walters. She may be the next up and coming Meryl Streep! It was so much fun I wouldn't mind seeing it again!

I thought Mamma Mia was great! I have seen the musical 3 times so I knew what to expect. They did a great job with the movie. I loved Meryl Streep, but wasn't too sure about Pierce Brosnan's singing ability. A definite must see!

I've always been a big fan of ABBA, though I never forked over the dough to see the musical. And I have been accused of extreme prejudice where Meryl Streep is concerned. In her dramatic work, I just don't see it. That is, I do see it. She is all technical and I have always felt, needs a good dose of "the method" in her acting. I never have to feel anything for her characters because they appear so self-indulgent, they do all the feeling for me. My biggest pet peeve in anyone's acting is crying on a dime and Meryl gives us that in bucketloads.
However, I am a fan of her comedic work, "Defending Your Life," "Postcards From The Edge." She appears to be a genuinely funny person on talk shows, I like her.
So, it was with great anticipation and excitement that I went to see "Mamma Mia!" I wanted to love it. I wanted to want to see it over and over again. It seemed such a joyful piece of work. But I was shocked. Where was all that humor. She appears either on the brink on tears, in tears, or wiping her tears throughout the whole movie. She plays it like it's a Shakespearean tragedy. Where was the irony? Where was the wink? Thank God for Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard. They knew the type of movie they were in.
I basically blame the director who was perhaps too in awe of Ms. Streep to pull her back.
The rest of the direction was dreadful as well, but if we'd had a funny and finessed performance from Ms. Streep it would have gone a long way.
I loved the all the big musical numbers. Colin Firth's voice was lovely and Julie Walters just a joy.
Then we have poor Pierce Brosnan and I'm not even talking about his valiant attempt at singing. I'm talking about those loooong minutes that he had to stand there with absolutely nothing to do, but look uncomfortable while Meryl played Prospero or Lear singing "The Winner Takes It All." I haven't seen scene chewing like that in a while. An I had no idea what she wanted from him. A song is just a monologue to music after all.
The one number I will give her credit for is "Slipping Through My Fingers." It was lovely and appropriate and pulled back. But just once I'd like to see her do a performance in which she didn't cry.
I'm not saying I didn't laugh and enjoy some of the movie, but all added up, I couldn't ever sit through it again. I honestly have to say it was just dreadful.

The movie had me laughing and smiling almost as soon as it started. Meryl Streep did a great job as Donna and Pierce Brosnan (although he can't sing) was a perfect Sam. You won't be sorry you paid to see this movie.

This is a toe-tapping, rolicking, good time. You want to sing and dance through the whole movie--and it is fabulous seeing middle-aged people having a wonderful time. Who cares that Pierce Brosnan cannot really sing? This movie takes one's mind off all aches, pains, and worries about the price of gasoline. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple of hours smiling. You will not want it to end.

Have enjoyed Mamma Mia! a few times onstage so was looking forward to the movie. When watching previews I was concerned that Streep was too old for the part, unfortunately my concern was well founded. She can sing well but she was just too old to come off realistically as the mother of a 21 year old. Although the other actors weren't much younger than her, hers was a critical part. Physically, she dances and moves well for her age. The suitors were well played by the Brosnan, Skelgard and Firth although, singing was weak. The views of the Greek Isles and the Meditteranean were gorgeous and made me want to go there,,,NOW! Despite the Streep concern, the movie was enjoyable.

I thought the movie was good, although I think that they could have chosen a better singer than Pierce Brosnan to match up with Meryl Streep. The world should watch for Amanda Seyfried - she's going to be a superstar!

This film took the music of our youth and applied it to a snappy plot. They had fun with it and I did too. Go with an old friend so you can laugh out loud together as you remember "when" catching all the little jokes!

I don't believe that my words would do this movie justice, just that everyone should go watch this movie. Whether you are an ABBA fan or not or even whether you have seen the stage show or not, it is an upbeat and fun story! I had recently gone to see the broadway production in preparation for seeing the movie and I felt that the story and the songs were held in tact with the added bonus of the beautiful scenery of Greece. It took my breath away! JUST GO SEE FOR YOURSELF! It was a great experience for one and all! LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!

I have seen the production in Vegas and fell in love with it. I was a bit skeptical about a movie version, but the chills came with the opening scenes. Beautiful scenery, Streep was awesome through the entire movie. "Dancing Queen" was my favorite scene. Christine Baronsky was fantastic in her rendition of 'Does Your Mother Know" However, watching Pierce Brosnan try to sing was about how I imagine Brett Favre would sing...A little painful, but I certainly enjoyed looking at him. All in all,I thought it was a fantastic musical. Loved every second of it! Will see it again and again.

I don't know what film many of the reviewers saw but it wasn't the same one I saw. This is just a plain fun movie--I saw the musical a few years ago on stage and the movie preserves the songs but adds so much more with the beautiful Greek Island scenario. The bougainvillea canopy at the wedding reception alone is worth the price of admission! Sure Pierce Brosnan can't sing but he IS a good Sam and Meryl Streep CAN sing--and Christine Baranski is amazingly limber for a 56-year old! And the chorus of Greeks is just wonderful, especially in the scene where all the women abandon their chores to sing with Meryl Streep.

4 stars: Good movie. I took my mom to see the film because we enjoyed the Broadway show so much. I thought the director chose a great cast to bring our favorite stage characters to life. Meryl Streep surprised me with her fantastic ability to belt out the classic ABBA tunes. Pierce Brosnan performed better than I expected, but then again, he's an actor, not a musician--so I say kudos to Pierce for singing on the big screen. The movie was slightly slow getting started but once the humor kicked in, the movie was very entertaining. I suggested to my girlfriends to rent the movie instead of paying to go to the theater, but I definitely recommend seeing it.

"Fun" is the best word to describe this film. "Plot" or "content" may not be. As I've heard with the on-stage musical, the biggest drawback to the whole thing is that the writers seemed to have found any excuse to toss in another Abba song. (And I do mean ANY excuse, including some really useless romantic side story lines.)
Still, Amanda Seyfried is outstanding as Sophie. She brings some real honesty to the character. And watching Pierce Brosnan belt out a tune was worth more than a few laughs. I have to say, Meryl Streep didn't knock me out of my socks. Watch for the Greek Chorus, though. They'll pop in at the best times.
Overall, it was a fun, rock-out on-screen musical--just don't expect to have your life changed by watching it.

Take your best friends to this! It is awesome and everyone leaves smiling. All the songs were great. Meryl Streep can sing and dance like a teen ager. She is so inspiring. It was a nicely directed movie. It featured amazing cinematography and awesome choreography.
It brought ABBA songs back to life. The movie scenes and the song lyrics complimented each other and went perfectly with the theme.
A perfect star cast.

I went not knowing much about this movie. I just knew what the media had to say about it. I knew it was a play first, a friend of mine had seen it in Vegas and had rave reviews. I'm getting the sound track from itunes and pretty sure I will purchase the DVD when it comes out. I can't say enough how nice it was to enjoy a movie so much!

Movie great as a follow up to the broadway show! Scenery a great plus - live show better from a vocal standpoint althought Streep is excellent in her role and has a GOOD voice to complement the acting. Julie Waters excellent also.

I've seen the play and had high hopes for the movie. Both the play and the movie do a great job of proving the timeless of ABBA's music. Where the play actors hit every note and are never seen out of makeup, the movie actors add a fantastic human element. Meryle Streep did a fantastic job of playing the role of Donna that is a welcome surprise. The rest of the cast did a great job also. The movie does exactly what it is supposed to do, make us laugh and feel good!

OK, I have to admit, I really got into this movie. Not because of the plot, but because of the music and upbeat tempo. This movie has no redeeming social value, its not GREEN or anit-war, but it feels good! ABBA music was one of those genres that you listened to to make yourself feel good, but quickly hid the record when friends came over. If your looking for a purely entertaining evening, try it out. By the way Pierce Brosnan(007) singing made me cringe, but in the spirit of the movie, was bearable. Meryl Streep's acting in "winner takes it all" will probably merit an academy nomination.
