After reading the negative reviews I almost decided to pass on this one. I would have missed an enjoyable couple of hours. Although not one of the years strongest films, there was a certain degree of irony (my main passion for seeing a movie) and the family tension was therapeutically engrossing. In other words, I found myself thinking how messed up this family was and reflected on my own. Eric Bana has set up a niche for himself that I hope he uses again and again. He seems to have been born for the part. Each sister held an endearing quality and a warning sign. The supporting actors were brilliant. They held the movie together. All in all, I may even watch it again.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I am a big world history buff, and this movie took the cake, although it was a bit innacurate, it made for some serious entertainment. It was amazing along with its actors who were brilliant. This remake of the King of England is amazing, its incredibly scandalous and nail bitting!!! Theres a great story line, with minipulative women and terrible powerful men. I love Eric Bana and in this movie he was amazing along with Scarlett and Natalie. Must see!!!!!

This movie was so historically inaccurate it was a joke. I was amazed that such quality actors as Natalie Portman, Scarlet Johansson and Eric Bana would have degraded themselves so much by appearing in it. Just to name a few of the inaccuracies. Mary was the older, not the younger sister. Both girls lived in France with the French court when they were young. Anne was not banished there. Mary was no virgin when she got married. She had already slept with the French king, Francis I, and many of his courtiers. They referred to her as the English Mare, because she had been ridden by them so many times. She wasn't married until she was Henry VIII's mistress. This movie looks pretty, but is pure trash.

First off, the reviews are pretty accurate in the sense that the movie did "butcher" history by trying to add a theatrical aspect to it. However, this shouldn't discredit the film itself, or the actresses- Natalie and Scarlet, as for Eric he could have done better. Considering the genre of historical dramas, it is one that is hard to embody. With that said, it's even more difficult to translate books to scripts, (ie. harry potter, lord of the rings,etc.). For it's particular genre the movie isn't too bad. It keeps you at the edge of your seat for the most part, but I don't think it's worth $10. Wait til it comes out on DVD. Aside from the phenomenal acting delivered by Scarlet and Natalie, the movie is quite dull; so don't go into it expecting too much.

Why oh why, I came out of this movie so disappointed. This movie had the potential to be brilliant. Sadly it barely made Good on my radar, frankly it got one of those stars because of Natalie Portman who made a valiant effort to inject some life into the character of Anne Boleyn. Historically this movie butchered the truth, not to mention it had about as much resemblance to the book it was based on as a big mac has to a rib eye steak. Eric Banner was pretty much just eye candy in this flick, his character while one of histories most notorious Kings came off as nothing more then a selfish male wench. Scarlett's character while mainly filled in fictionally wasn't very accurate nor very compelling. This really should have either been a longer movie or a mini series, because the depth and breadth of the material covered deserved more then this. While disappointing plot wise, this was a beautiful movie to look at, wonderful costume designer and the ladies wore those dresses well. I'll be curious to see if they release a directors cut of this movie when it hits DVD because it could quite possibly save this movie and make it worth seeing again. Bottom line, if your looking for a historical movie, this is not it, if your looking for something akin to Elizabeth (1998) you'll be sorely disappointed. If you like period films and aren't interested in the historical content then watch this flick, it's somewhat satisfying but it feels like it's been over edited or it's missing something. I would recommend it though just to watch Natalie Portman, she was the highlight of this movie.... well ok I'll be honest she pretty much carried this movie.

The overall movie left a lot to be desired in terms of historical accuracy, however, that is to be expected with most period pieces. The hollywoodization should not detract people from appreciating the performances in the film. Natalie Portman was outstanding as Anne! She did an amazing job! Her performance is one of the main reasons my rating is so high. Her character is perfectly coniving and wretched and you despise her, even when you pity her.

I thought that this wasn't a bad movie in the beginning and the middle, but then it became really sad and depressing from the middle to the end. I feel like they stretched out the bad parts of the book and took away the majority of the good parts. It wasn't a bad movie if you haven't read the book though. All the actors/actresses were amazing(Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson). Probabaly, this wasn't the way I would have done the movie, but it wasn't so bad.

Wow, that movie moves fast. I mean months and sometimes years take place from scene to scene...it's unfortunate because they crammed so much into it that there is very little character development. I think that Bana was non-existant and the girls over-acted. I wasn't thoroughly bored since I think this story is intriguing (not exactly true to history,) but it wasn't all that great.

Powerful movie with amazing cast. Natalie Portman is outstanding in protraying Anne. As well as Scarlett Johanson as Mary. Although there were some akward cuts but overall a lot of history, beautiful picture and costume..., and the plot that often keeps you on your toes. Advice, don't think too much about the book, just enjoy the movie. One of the biggest films with outstanding cast of the year.

I read the book before hand, and it goes into alot more detail, and doesn't pit the sisters against eachother as much as the movie does. It builds more of a bond between the Boleyn siblings, and then shows their fall. I think the movie spent to little time on each aspect fo the story, and seemed to rush all of it to an end. Other than that I think Natalie Portman was the perfect person to play Ann, she nailed that role!! The 2 stars are just for her acting..

I'm a history geek so I enjoyed the movie (regardless of inaccuracies). I think I would have liked it more if I wasn't a fan of the book because you go in expecting that and this movie really didn't share any aspects with it.
It just felt like it was missing something, there were some plot holes and jumping around. I hope when this is released they also release a Director's Cut. It reminded me of Kingdom of Heaven, the general release was ok but missing something. The Director's Cut filled in those gaps and made it a whole new movie. I think that is what this movie needs.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I read the book by Phillipa Gregory and became entranced by this period of history, subsequently reading several history books on Henry VIII and his wives. The book took some creative licenses, but was still riveting, and for the most part, historically accurate. The movie, on the other hand, avoided delving into most of what made this period in English history so fascinating - namely the religious and policial implications of Henry's obsession with Anne. The movie made it seem like these events occurred rapidly, when in reality, Mary Boleyn was with King Henry for several years before he lost interest (and bore 2 children by him, not one), and Anne struggled to maintain Henry's interest for over six years before becoming Queen.
Natalie Portman does an excellent job in the role of Anne Boleyn, but I think this movie would be confusing for anyone not familiar with the history.
Generally, movies based on actual events that veer off-course from the "truth" annoy me. They leave an inaccurate impression on the viewer and do injustice to history. However, the film was still entertaining and would be worth a rental.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

C'mon. Movies are entertainment - Disney never stays true to the original story and nobody smacks them upside the head. I've read a few versions of Henry's biography and biographies of all the wives. I still liked this movie. Natalie was convincing. Scarlett was convincing. Their uncle was despicable. Kristin needed more screen time - she's fabulous. Eric is too hot to worry about if he is convincing - but he was. (I wonder how tall he is.) Well done. I enjoyed it. Can you IMAGINE being a woman during that time in history?! YIKES!

Wow what a wonderful, sensative and powerful movie. The passion from which power comes from exudes in this film. Bana can be lead around the nose by a skirt, he rules with his other brain!. Portman knows her power and being cunning. Johansson undeniably wins in the end with strength and power she never knew she had. Elizabeth is the testiment to the other Boleyn girl! Bravo

This is one of those movies that illustrate how powerless women have been in history yet how great they have influenced history even w/o that power. This movie demonstrates how jealousy and greed for status most times have disastrous outcomes. Overall, an ok movie-interesting piece of history to say the least- especially regarding how one decision can change the world forever.

Very enjoyable... When I see a movie, I want to be entertained and this movie succeeded in doing that... I don't know how people can read the book and then see the movie simply to investigate what "was" and what "wasn't" in the book. This movie is "BASED" on a novel.. and the NOVEL is "BASED" lightly on historical facts with a lot of presumed drama thrown in. So if you are looking to just compare with history.. just tune in to the history channel.
If you're looking for a good entertaining drama for a few hours that is well acted and an good story to watch... this is it. I liked it a lot, the costumes, the portrayal of the era, and the acting were well worth the ticket! Enjoy!

What a bad movie of a great book. This movie was not factually correct, historically correct, or true to the book. It played like a boring documentary , in fast forward. The screenwriter obviously forgot it was the story of The Other Boleyn Girl, not a rushed through, ill- acted history lesson on the disgraced English queen. There are some really great actors in this movie, it's a shame we never get to see what they can do. Don't waste your money on this one. Or better yet, just buy the book instead.
