Although my son was looking forward to it, I didn't really expect much going into Speed Racer. The annoying Spritle and wooden dialogue didn't do much to change my mind through the first hour. Even the visuals seemed boring. As soon as the movie hits the cross-country race midway through the film, that changed. Spritle was thankfully pushed aside, the race scenes became much more exciting, and I actually started to enjoy the characters (except for Spritle of course.) Although it was about 20 minutes too long, I ended up liking the movie far more than I could have believed by the time it was over. For pure popcorn entertainment, it works.

I took my 8 year old and my 3 year old son to see the movie. It was a little long for my 3 year old but my older son loved it. There were a lot of non-action scenes that seemed to drag on but when the action started----you forgot all about it. I honestly don't remember hearing any 4 letter words and can vaguely remember smoking. There were some scenes that were violent but they didn't show anything too graphic. Lots of neat special effects. We all really enjoyed the movie! It's set up for a sequel!!!!!

Seems like critics have it in for this picture (which is ironic because everyone fawns over Tarantino), but don't let them discourage you. It is unlike anything you have seen. I was a big fan of the original cartoon, and I was not disappointed, despite the almost unbelievable computer effects. It is also more kid (and not just boy) friendly than most of the other films I have seen lately.

This was pretty good, my kids (5 and 7 yrs.) will probably want the DVD when it comes out. As far as comparing it to Transformers...It wasn't as impressive, and it was just as long. Overall, I would recommend this movie to anyone who has watched the cartoon as a child, and won't take it too seriously, for a fun-filled night out.

The movie could not have been cast better. Unfortunately, they couldn't save the plot or cinematics. The movie was about 20 minutes too long. I'm sure the director was going for the comic strip look, but with all the neon effects, I felt like I was in an updated version of 'Tron.'

With the PG rating I didn't expect what we got. My kids are 4 and 6 and it was too violent for us. I would not recommend for little kids. There was a lot of gun use and very violent race scenes. I thought it went a bit too far. Oh and showing a little kid giving the middle finger salute is not something I like to promote. I like the costumes and sets. Much of it reminded me of a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory type movie. I'm not familiar with the original or the cartoon so maybe that is how they all are. I thought that was creative and fun. It could have been a much better family movie if they would have toned down the violence.

I loved the anime as a kid and this movie was no different. I felt the cast did a terrific job recreating the characters and the film had amazing special effects that kept me wondering what they were going to do next. Overall this movie had everything for everyone no matter what age so I highly recommend taking the family out for a night of high-speed racing fun.

I was very excited to see this movie as I was an avid fan of the Speed Racer cartoon as a child. The movie does indeed translate the cartoon into live action quite well but does so in any overlong and simplistic manner. The film seems to be geared toward an 6-8 year old audience. The visuals are fantastic if a bit overdone at times. In particular, the use of sliding individual characters across the frame to move from scene to scene was overused and annoying! The acting was fine but could have used more substance in the script. I had a good time but felt the film would have been much stronger at 90 to 110 minutes.

Our family of four really enjoyed Speed Racer. The message of the film is that family is more important than anything. It was refreshing to see a movie that didn't have smart alecky kids talking back to and rolling their eyes at their parents while the parents act like idiots. The action was great as were the special effects and music. We're big fans of action adventure movies and we loved it! It was a lot of fun to share the Speed Racer from our childhood with our kids.

This movie could have been cut way down. Too many unnecessary scenes. Also the suggestive scenes that were in the movie were not necessary for the target audience. Also the characters and the movie were stretched a bit beyond what the animated characters were. By the empty seats in our theater (only about 20 viewers) the movie didn't do well.

Visually one of the most original films I've ever seen. It's a perfect blend of real and unreal that is absolutely unbelievable but at the same time I didn't bother to question. It's the kind of movie that's not afraid to completely let go and just be a fun movie for the sake of being a fun movie. No need for messages, political commentary or an over-inflated sense of self importance. It's just a ridiculous and ridiculously fun over the top adventure film that at it's core is a simple story of a family who loves racing and who loves each other. Cant beat it. I've been waiting for this movie for years and I was completely and thoroughly satisfied in every way, shape and form.

If you go into this movie expecting an amazing cinematic experience, then this is not the movie for you. If you go in expecting to have a good time, and see a Speed Racer cartoon with real people, you will enjoy this. They took the cartoon, and brought a great translation to the big screen. It was fun and fast paced. The colors and backgrounds look just like a cartoon. Once again, Emile Hirsch put in a great performance, this time as a classic cartoon character. Like I said, don't go see this movie expecting one of the best movies you have ever seen. Go in expecting to have a good time, and you will love it.

The movie is a true tribute to the classic Animated series from the 1960's. The film had great casting with John Goodman playing the role I believe he was born to play Pops Racer, Emile Hirsch as Speed, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer, Christina Ricci as Trixie, and Matthew Fox as Racer X. The Special and Visual effects were awesome. Five Star all the way, everyone should see it, along with Iron Man.

I really liked the way the characters were picked out, and how well everything matched the original cartoon. I rather enjoyed it, IN SPITE OF the "Inappropriate gesture"
Folks gotta remember, Chim-chim and Sprytle were the comic relief and rough humor to balance out the drama and danger of Speed and Racer X. You don't see a single episode of SR that didn't include CC&S pigging out on somebody's stash of sweets, getting sick and making rude jokes. I would never have expected anything less than a bird-finger from him. Call me the devil's advocate, I guess.

I went to see it with my 16 yr. old son expecting a flop, but was pleasantly surprised. This movie had me cracking up at times and revisiting my childhood. The Wachowski brothers out did themselves. Even Pete Fernandez the original voice of Speed Racer was featured in the film as an announcer. Trixie looks beautiful and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job. The vivid colors and mixed animation works well. a must see for the entire family. When it was over, my son said he liked it better than Iron Man. When is Speed 2 coming out!!!???

I took a six-year-old to the movie and she really enjoyed it but I could tell she was getting bored during the longer dialogue scenes. To be fair this film wasn't intended for my daughter's age group but I could see pre-teens being bored out of their minds too during some of the longer scenes. Beautiful looking movie and very well done but borderline self-indulgent because they could have easily trimmed 20min off this thing: Did we really need to constantly pan back to the reporters covering the race? Cutting back on that a bit could have cut 10min out of this opus.

My family and I saw Speed Racer on Opening Night (Friday, May 9). My three sons, ages 11 and 9 year old twins were on a playdate with a friend of ours and her 9 year old son. The movie was great! I did not particularly care for Speed Racer as a child but the renewed version exceeded my expectations. Finally a children's movie made for KIDS! What a concept...Only one profane word was used in the whole movie and it was bleeped out. Keep making movies like this one and I believe kids can return to being kids. Thank you
