More character, less action

Compared to previous movies, this one has less action, and a lot more character develpoment. All characters seem believable, and the actors really get a chance to shine here. More suspense and drama than special effects, although (of course) there are those, too - like the attack on the Millenium Bridge in London.
If you are looking for a summer action block-buster, this might not satisfy you. In its more than 2 1/2 hours, there are only a few fast-paced scenes. But if you like a good movie, and especially if you are a Harry Potter fan, you will thoroughly enjoy this flick.
It definitely sets up for the final show-down of book 7 (or movies 7 and 8) - so much so that I stayed in my seat wanting to see RIGHT NOW how it continues!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I am always excited to see a new HP movie however, I do get nervous that things could go a bit awry (as they did when Dumbledore needed replacing). This movie DID NOT disappoint. As usual I was swept into the magical world from the que of the music in the opening credits. This installation was a splendid continuation of the story; New characters are brought to life, it stays true to the majority of the details with splendid visual depictions of locations. Although this is probably the least kid-friendly of the collection as there are several mildly-violent scenes which are a bit haunting. No complaints (just keep the little ones at home), had it been done any other way, it would have been unfortunate. A wonderful addition to the series!

I have read all 7 books to this series. and the 6th one was one of my personal favorites. The movie did a excellent job of staying rather close to the book and getting across all the major points that needed to be covered. It kept me on the edge of my seat and the graphics were ALOT better than in the other harry potters. Don't wait for dvd. This is to good to miss.

While I enjoyed the movie overall, I felt that getting the main gist across has replaced the wonderful emotions of the earlier films. I particularly wanted to see Dumbledore frustrated that Harry couldn't get the memory from Slughorn to stress the urgency of it! I also wanted to see Dumbledore physically stop Harry from saving him on top of the tower, not mildly ask him to go below and stay there. What about Harry's palpable frustration at having to stand by and do nothing? The movie felt like it went blandly from scene to scene so that the final movies are set up enough to get by. So to me this movie is enjoyable, but lacking...Wishing for more of the book's emotion in the next one please!

I thought the entire movie captured the emotions of the book extremely well, but what really impressed me was Tom Felton's performance as Draco Malfoy. The short scenes showing him struggling with his new choice of life was a deeply-felt reminder of the pains of adolescence and every other significant change in life.

Jim Broadbent was really brilliant as Horace Slughorn, so that alone is worth the visit. Rupert Grint gets to show off his comedic acting chops with the love potion segment. Tom Felton is great and Draco gets more screen time. Alll the actors seem to have shed most of their awkward acting tendencies. Lots of new faces, the young Voldemorts are especially good,.
It moves too fast again, except when it deviates from the book, but it's great to have Quidditch back and new characters.
Not enough Hagrid, not the right lines for Hargrid, not enough Snape, but a few choice scenes with him. Now that Snape has some strong purpose, you can feel the fuller character come across.

I thought this was a well made movie. Some of the scenes were just spectacular and definately raised the bar for the 7th movie. I really appreciated the focus on Dumbledore, the co-character development, and the obvious increase in skill that the actors displayed.
This movie definately was content and not action drivin, but thats cool; for us who read the book, we know there is a lot more action to come!

I was very excited about this movie, and really wanted to see the book brought to life. I was thoroughly disappointed! It lacks all the crucial details that set up the stage for the finale. As you watch the movie, you grudging accept the changes that have been made, anticipating the thrill of the final confrontation that ends with Dumbledore's death. And when that scene is also completely changed, you're left feeling thoroghly cheated. Still....if you're a die hard Harry Potter fan, you've got to see the movie.

The movie was good but I felt that key things from the book were left out. They didn't set you up for the next two movies very well. I'd recommend reading the book to find out the details that were left out. Had they made the movie a little bit longer they could've added a few things in. Overall it wasn't a bad movie though.

There is a delicious mixture of comedy and pathos that emulates Rowling's novels well. Of course there are moments which we ask "Why?"--the opening scene for example. The Dursleys would have been better. The end scene (spoiler alert) "Why not?" Seeing the sepulchre at the lakeside would have been lovely and poignantly understated. But the overall quality of cinematography, special effects and yes, even the acting has gone up a notch. The casting is superb: The relationship between Harry and Hermione is quite well-acted. The friendship bond seems quite genuine. Critics will grouse, but accepting the film medium for what it is and the literature for itself as well will maximize the patron's enjoyment.

Wish they had put more of the book in, in spots it was choppy trying to crunch it into a shorter movie time. They could have started the movie with the prime minister visit they skipped it and they could have shown the funneral, skipped also. The rest of the movie was good but it could of been great and they missed the mark.

I enjoyed how this movie was put together better than the previous 5. Despite the changes and missing aspects from the book, the film flowed well and took on a life of its own. The young actors have improved immensely, and they seem to have gotten a knack for humor. I'd say this movie is good for two times through, but I'm ready to move on to the last book.

Every Potter Fan must see it. Of course it is not as great as the book, but the special effects are marvelous. I was a little disappointed that some of the major parts were not included in the film. On the otherhand, the characters were brilliant and the scenery was breathtaking. In all fairness, my only suggestion would have been a more noble send off for the Magnificent Dumbledore.

I thought the movie was well done even though there were obviously a lot of details they had to cut out. I think everyone should read or listen to book on CD the Harry Potter series but not everyone will--and so I felt like they linked the sequences together well for many who will never read or listen to the stories.
My only criticism was when things are made over dramatic--like the CGI creatures in the water. They were already scary from the story--but made more goblin like than you were lead to believe in the story.
Outside of these exaggerations of detail the story was great and I'm excited for the next movie. But in the mean time Harry fans, or fantasy fans, in general should go see this movie.

The movie was excellent! People have to get past the idea that the movies have to follow the books page for page, and understand that there are limits, due to so many different factors. The movie's story does not stray from the character's personas in the book; they are absolutely true to form. This movie does an excellent job of following the book in its most important parts, and where changes have been made, they are completely understandable (although I too, was a bit disappointed that there was no school-fought battle with the Deatheaters at Hogwart's). This movie is fantastic as both a stand-alone movie, or a companion to the books.

This is the first time they've actually completely failed at adapting the book to film. They left out 90% of the story, major key events, and even felt free to add some events in the movie as well. The whole thing was completely rushed and make virtually no sense. What happened to 700 of the 900 pages from the book? The special effects were great, and if I had never read the books, it probably would have been an okay movie.

I give this movie five stars - really - I loved it! The first three films were great, but the last two were a let-down, way too much emphaisis on Fx, at least as far as I was concerned (and my husband felt the same). This one, however, is terrific. Even though I've read the book and knew what was coming I jumped out of my skin a couple of times (it wasn't surprise - just well done direction and effects) and I cried at the end (again, even though I'd known what to expect). The reviews I'd read had said this movie was more chatty and less Fx - and indeed it was, though there was more than enough of the latter to satisfy those who want to see lots of Fx. I recommend the film highly - don't miss it!

Being an avid fan of the harry potter books, I was skeptical about going to see this movie, since the past 5 have been great, but a slight letdown. This movie captured the audience from minute one. The action and suspense had everybody at the edge of their seat, even when most of us knew what would be happening next. Also a new twist was added to this movie. Comedy was a great relief to the sadness that shadows the movie. Ron, Lavender, and Harry had us all ecstatic. Overall, excellent movie, might just go again to see it.

I'm disappointed in the "Half-Blood Prince". Always in the past the movies have stayed with the books and it has been my understanding that this was as per JK Rowling's wishes. I'm wondering if she got to see this movie before it was released! There were ommissions that I felt were a major part of the book. There were changes that just left me asking "Why?" and scratching my head. I don't want to spoil it for the HP fans that have not seen the movie yet, but for us die hard fans, it was disappointing.

I loved this movie. The acting seems more relaxed at this point they are so much of the character that it is easy to see the relationships grow. Slughorn is a great addition to the school. Very funny lines never laughed so hard in a HP movie before.

Generally, the movie was good and flowing over all until the very end. I had no large complaints about some portions of the key story being left out or changed, but I am VERY disappointed in the way the film ended. By leaving the final conflict out of the movie and downplaying the invasion of Hogwarts, it strips the story of key emotional element and leaves the audience with an anti-climatic ending.

Im one of the biggest Potter fans ever.... I thought the movie was great... However instead of adding things that didn't really happen in the books (the burrow scene)... They should have focused more on what really did....Also there really should have been a funeral for Dumbledore i mean come on... And no mentioning of the fact that the locket had already been found (the real one) they just didn't know it... This actually goes back to ootp cuz that's where they came across it... & Dumbledore's wand was actually buried with him... But anyway done with my complaining... I love that they stuck with the flying away of Fawkes tho... *tear*

Much of the movie is compelling; the teen love, friendship (and Quiddich!) subplots in book six are handled with just the right note--funny and touching; appropriate for any kid. But the darker, deeper plot lines, including Harry's personal pain, are muddied to the point that the book/movie's stunning conclusion isn't stunning at all. Maybe that's why there's no emotional release for viewers. There isn't actually a whole lot of emotion to release! There are departures from the book that seemed pointless plotwise, and some bad cuts toward the end. My bet: there's a better (much longer) movie on the cutting room floor. Overall: painless, funny with supercool effects and fine acting--and vaguely empty.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
