My husband and I went to see the movie last night and had a good time. There are some plot holes, which most movies have, but we were impressed with the visual details. The cars, the imagery, sets, were what made the story believable and that's what is fantastic about the movie. If you are not expecting an oscar worthy movie and like the alter reality plot you will have enjoy this movie. Don't worry about the rotten tomatoes ratings as you'll enjoy it.
I liked Twilight but New Moon was better. Which is funny because with the books I liked Twilight better and I found New Moon pretty annoying at times. The action in this movie helped the speed that Twilight was so slow at. I think introducing new characters helped thicken the plot and the director did a great job at making you follow everything. I enjoyed that most the actors really knew their characters well. I've read all the books so I feel this was very important. I thought it was great and fun movie to see and I'd recommend it to any of my friends who are into sci fi or fantasy type movies. And given my age of course I wasn't gasping when the lead characters removed their shirts--I was laughing with my husband.
The movie is an interesting script written off a book that is barely over 10 pages long. It brings the story to a real setting so that we can relate to Max. I loved the book as a kid but I was most interested in the creative illustrations. The move translation of these were awesome. I think older kids might be ok with seeing this and getting it but it's not for every child. If you are expecting a Disney storyline this is not it. I went into this movie with no expectations and if you do that you won't be disappointed. It's a strange and original type of fantasy movie. Although I don't like the idea of rewarding a naughty child the adaptation of a mother's relief when her child comes home is done well.
I thought the movie was well done even though there were obviously a lot of details they had to cut out. I think everyone should read or listen to book on CD the Harry Potter series but not everyone will--and so I felt like they linked the sequences together well for many who will never read or listen to the stories.
My only criticism was when things are made over dramatic--like the CGI creatures in the water. They were already scary from the story--but made more goblin like than you were lead to believe in the story.
Outside of these exaggerations of detail the story was great and I'm excited for the next movie. But in the mean time Harry fans, or fantasy fans, in general should go see this movie.
I went to see Coraline in 3D last night with no expectations. When I do this I'm much more pleased than if I had high expectations. I read the book before this came out and the differences are great. However I think the adaptation was a good one and it made everything more visual than the way you picture it in your head from reading the story. I'm very glad it was in stop animation because if it was in CGI I wouldn't have appreciated the details and movements of the characters as much.
I thought the movie was great. It had less cheesy effects than the first movie and I loved getting to see all the different scenes they filmed in Chicago near where I worked. I think they did a good job at integrating the surreal with the realistic to make it believable. It makes me very excited to see the next one.
