There are so many things that one can say about The Dark Knight. The first thing I would say is that you definitely shouldn't be taking anyone under 12 to see it. As much as I loved Burton's and Jack Nicholson's crazy fun take on Joker, -this- is what Joker is really about in the comics. He's evil, sadistic, and yet has a playful side at times. The movie captures Joker's personality perfectly, as well as the ensuing chaos of the city he besieges.
Perhaps my only qualm with this movie is that it is less about Batman and more about what is happening around him. However, since Begins focused so much on Mr. Wayne, to see what else is going on in his world was a welcome change.
With Iron Man and now this, the bar for superhero movies has been raised precipitously high. Way to go, Nolan & Crew!

I've been a Batman fan forever, this one was not a disappointment! It is a longer movie but it keeps your interest throughout and advances the plot well. Heath Ledger's performance was astounding, by far the best Joker I've ever seen as well as the best villain performance I've ever witnessed.

Not only is Nolan's latest Batman adaptation the best one to ever be put on film, but Batman goes places and visits subjects that no other comic movie has dared. Never have I seen such sacrifice in a character. The depth of Batman goes far beyond anything mild-mannered or geeky-romantic. The Dark Knight is the epitome of everything that should be in a GREAT movie. With enough action, plot, and character to keep everyone interested, Batman has reclaimed his position of the truest American icon.

Christopher Nolan weaves a tale of moral complexity that is often not seen in a superhero movie. This story knows exactly how to approach this popular genre. It uses a very fictional tale to exemplify aspects and themes of our reality. Nolan tells us why we need heros and more then that he analyses what a hero is. Go see this movie. Greatest movie I've seen in years; characters were well developed and believable (even ones with only brief appearances). Story just excellent, not angsty as it had potential to be. Good humor in places and good gravity in places. Just go see it, totally worth the arm and leg prices.

Let's put the cards on the table, I am a HUGE Batman fan stemming mostly from the 1989 film and the following "Batman: The Animated Series" on WB. Those two pieces became the standard by which I judged all comic interpretations, in that they provided depth of plot and character while keeping action realism at a premium.
And last night I shelved those two standards and made The Dark Knight my favorite comic book movie ever (top 10 of all movies), and easily my favorite movie of 2008.
What went right? Well Nolan knows how to work a camera, and knows how not to abuse special effects and gimmicky or cliched action sequences. The first 2 hours moved FAST, lots of well choreographed action that (despite the lack of blood) was very violent and visceral, the last 30 minutes were slower but appropriately so, I needed some time to digest the rich, juicy, delicious center. The writing was also superbly strong, although this too hit one or two snafus in the final minutes.
Now, the acting and the character depth are what really make this the overall best movie of 08. Bale comes back strong, and maintains a strong connection with the rest of the cast (especially with stand outs Gary Oldman and Michael Caine). But it was Heath Ledger who MADE you pay attention to the film, he was insane, he was about as diabolical and psychotic a character as I have ever seen and that perfectly fits what the Joker really is (not the weakling goofball of Adam West days). The Joker scared you, kept you off balance, and seemed to be present in a whole other realm than the rest of the cast, he really was a man whose psychosis went deep and corrupted the world around him.
This is a gold standard that all Action, and Crime Saga should aspire too as it has a huge plot that flows nearly perfectly despite its ambition. As a comic book movie, this is the kind of quality that pansies such as Spiderman and Superman Returns should have been. The Dark Knight was a fantastic way to show Heath Ledgers amazing, and final, performance. The film exceeded my expectations throughout its duration, occasionally slipping, but for the 98% of the film that worked it worked AMAZINGLY. In fact I'm going to go see it again tonight.

Replete with references to the Patriot Act, Iraq War, terrorist homicide videos and the problem of defeating an enemy whose only aim is to create chaos; The Dark Knight aims to prove that lying to the masses is sometimes a good thing. Heath Ledger is incredible, the music and visual effects are excellent and the moral/ethical conundrums faced by the good guys are plentiful. The Dark Knight is truly dark, and leaves the audience with a better understanding of what it takes to truly defeat pure evil.

There's no doubt in my mind that Heath Ledger should "receive" the Oscar for his performance in this movie--hands-down. Forget the cartoonish version of the joker played by Jack Nicholson; Ledger's joker is an eerily realistic, blood-thirsty psychopath that would not think twice to slit your throat and laugh about (in fact, that method of death would likely be a little too quick for him). Throughout the movie, this character walks the fine line between comedic and scary (I have to admit that I fealt guilty for laughing at his antics at one point in the movie). All BS aside, Ledger paints the perfect picture of a deeply disturbed madman who is thrilled to the point of physical sensation--displayed by his frequent twitching and high-pitched laughing fits--at the sight of pain, death, chaos, and destruction.
Add another stellar performance by Christian Bale as a truly hardcore version of Batman and the surprise emergence of another all-too-real villain and you've got not only the best Batman I've seen, but the best superhero movie I can remember. What made this movie so great is that the characters make you believe they could be real instead of some far-fetched supernatural being.
THIS IS NOT ONE FOR THE KIDS, so get a babysitter and go check this one out. You'll be blown away...

Everything about this movie is amazing. Heath Ledger is getting all of the well-deserved and appropriate praise for this movie (which I do not disagree with...his performance truly was amazing), but the other actors in the film should not be overlooked. Everyone in the film did an amazing job and the story line is fantastic and never drags. "The Dark Knight" is the complete package, and is personally the best movie I've seen in a few years.

The Dark Knight is undoubtably the best movie I have seen in a VERY long time. No doubt, the passing of Heath Ledger adds to the hype of the movie, but as soon as he comes unto the screen as the Joker, his performance out shines anything else that could be said. The story was executed perfectly.. I would see this movie again and again! I have no other words than to say I was absolutely blown away. Every single person is this film gave a steller performance. I would be amazed if this movie doesnt sweep the awards shows.

Not only a great comic book movie, and not just a great action movie. But "The Dark Knight" is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The social commentary is moving and the acting is superb especially Heath Ledger, who if the Academy was smart would give an Oscar nod. The entire cast, writers and director transend the comic book genre to greatness with a complete movie.

The latest installment of the Batman series is without a doubt the best of the bunch. The writer's clearly wanted to remove the "comic book-y" feel of other superhero movies (Spiderman) and be true to the legend. Everything that has been written about the performance by Heath Ledger is an understatement, and if he does not win an Oscar for his performance then Congress should launch an immediate investigation into the Academy (Arlen Spector - did you get that?). Ledger's Joker is a psychotic madman without a conscious and with no gimmicky storyline to explain his madness. He just, in the words of Alfred, "wants to watch the world burn". He is ruthless and smart, more than a match for The Batman.
This by no means diminishes the performance of Christian Bale - clearly the best Batman to don the cowl and cape. He's fully fleshed out here, with all his flaws and characteristics that make him a man, and his struggle to remain true to his cause for justice is as mighty as his struggle with his arch-nemesis.
The fact is, unlike most superhero movies, you really do not have to suspend belief to think this is real, to get into the movie. The supporting cast of bad guys, including Eric Roberts, were a bit stereotypical and stiff, but it did not detract from the movie itself.
My only regret is the untimely death of Ledger will prevent us from seeing a reprise of his role in any future movies. This will easily be one of the best movies of the year.

I would give the overall movie an 8, but Heath Ledger gets a 10. He did an amazing job in a role I never thought he would be doing. The joker character made the movie with his little tics and jokes. It's too bad Heath died before we could all apprechiate what he could really do.
