I've never been a fan of Robert Downey, Jr. Not because of all his personal struggles (though his judgement has certainly been less than impressive many times), but because I felt like he was a one-note actor who could only play smarmy jerks. Also, Iron Man himself has always been a character I could take or leave. I never had much against him, but never sought out his adventures either. Consequently, I wondered if seeing Iron Man would be an unpleasant repeat of the Ghost Rider experience -- an actor who annoys me playing a superhero I don't care about.
Well Robert, all is forgiven. You were fantastic. And Shellhead, you're more interesting to me than you've ever been, thanks to this movie, a note-perfect film distillation of Iron Man comics. The movie does an absolutely stellar job of making Iron Man an emblematic hero for our current historical moment, and makes Stan Lee's concepts seem smarter and more prescient than they ever were (not that they were dumb at the time!)
The casting is outstanding -- Jeff Bridges makes a wonderful Judas-like villain, and Gwyneth Paltrow is refreshingly strong: she's not the hero's girlfriend, and she doesn't scream once! For his part, Downey as Tony Stark begins with his standard smarmy jerk routine and then transforms it marvelously as the character's heroic side emerges .
Highly recommended.

The first 15 minutes were terrible for young kids. It's a shame that they had to add that junk, but the rest of it was pretty good. Great surprise ending.

Ironman marks the beginning of the summer movie season as far as I'm concerned. It snuck up on me while I waited for "Indy" and "Dark Knight", and boy what a pleasant surprise it was! Robert Downey Jr. was our perfectly sarcastic brainiac hero, Gwyneth Paltrow was a great secretary longing for her boss, and if Jeff Bridges doesn't have physically the biggest head in pictures, I don't know who does.
Ultra cool!

Its going to be this summer's blockbuster action movie. Great performance by Robert Downey Jr. - very believable. He has all that cocky sass, and the plot allows him to be creative. There's enough heat between him and Gwyneth to steam up half a mirror -- would have liked to seen more of that. Awesome special effects and a plot that has some depth make this a must see movie. All the techie's are going to love it and the ladies will like the romance.
I'm hoping they use a 2nd suit in the sequel (for Howard) and get things heated up a lot more between Downey and Paltrow.
Few movies are actually worth the time and money - this one certainly is!

This was one of the best movies I have seen in years. The CGI was great and the beliveability was off the charts. This is really a great movie the only problem is I thought he should have asked his assistant to marry him. But the sequil will probably cover that.

One of the Best Marvel Movies out to date. Go and see this movie even if your not a marvel or action fan. The director and producer did an excellent job on the overall direction and building the story line for the viewers. There are a few parts of really funny humor. Mostly all the actors did a wonderful job acting, Robert Downey Jr, Terrence Howard all of them did a great job. Action fan or not, one of the best and well done movies of 2008. You won't be disappointed!

Of all the super hero movies released in the last few years (Spiderman, X-men, etc), this tops them all. The only super hero movie better than this is the Chris Nolan Batman movie. Definitely worth seeing in the theater.

As all of you know, when Stan Lee began to draw Iron Man for DC comics back in 1924, he wasn't always the altruistic hero he's portrayed to be. In fact, he originally began as an arch nemesis to Batman, meant to match his powers measure for measure. However, as is the custom with so many three-dimensional villains, Iron Man soon learned that there are things worth saving, and that no amount of money can buy the honor he quested for in his lust to defeat the Dark Knight.
This film, like so many titles of recent years, doesn't follow the original story, of course, starting Iron Man out as the superhero we know and love. We find out very quickly that Iron Man's superpowers have largely been preserved, with the exception of his rocket boosters which were deemed "impractical" by writer and producer David Hayter.
Although many people questioned the decision to cast Jeff Bridges as Iron Man, most agree that he puts his best foot forward in a convincing as well as compelling performance. Similarly, Ian McKellan is sinister and strangely sympathetic as Iron Man's nemesis, Magneto, whose apocalyptic motivations shall always remain a mystery.
Although the movie flowed relatively well, I felt that the ending was a bit dull and meant largely to leave room for Iron Man 2. Magneto's escape into the mountains just as Iron Man is attempting to harness the Silver Surfer's board to obliterate him couldn't save enough steam to keep me satisfied to the end.
All in all, if you appreciate a good movie and don't mind the inconsistencies, platonic acting, rather shaky special effects and deviated storyline, you should find this movie to be a good time. Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for Elektra 2 to come out later this summer.

Robert Downey Jr was irreverent, brilliant, funny and completely sexy! Jon Favreau brought out the best in Downey. While I wasn't thrilled with the look Jeff Bridges was sporting, it did suit his role as a complete jerk without being over the top (normally he is brilliant and sexy too). Gwyneth Paltrow surprised me by pulling off her role as the plucky and under appreciated assistant. But the best character was the fire hydrant wielding robot who managed by turns to infuriate Robert Dowey Jr's character and endear itself to the audience (think R2 D2 from Star Wars - A New Hope). The robot filled the part of comic side kick without detracting from the main story. All in all, this is a movie I will watch many times over with my family.

I, someone who is not a fan usually of comic book themed movies, went to the show with a avid ironman fan, a child who loves comic books and my mother who is in her 70's. Everyone loved the show, including me. The theater was packed and the movie was action packed. Robert Downey Jr. was awesome as his character Stark and as IronMan. Gwyneth Paltrow was a good leading lady and really seemed to play well to Mr. Stark. Funny, action adventure for everyone. Few graphic scenes and suggestive content, but all in all a great movie.

Been waiting for a smart, stylish, action-filled, adventure film? It just landed at a cineplex near you! Get your fluids adjusted before Iron Man starts, because you're not going to want to miss a moment of director Jon Favreau's Marvel-ous adaptation of this comic hero's tangled tale. I've never read Iron Man or anything from its related family of comics, so I came into the theater with no background beyond what I'd seen in trailers over recent months. It proved to be two hours and six minutes of exciting value for my ten dollar ticket.
Casting is excellent, from Robert Downey, Jr., as brilliant but self-absorbed billionaire engineer, Tony Stark, to Jeff Bridges as the glib and ruthlessly ambitious Obadiah Stane, Gwyneth Paltrow as the Stark's loyal (but leggy) corporate sherpa and Terrance Howard, well-paced and plausible as Stark protégé, USAF Lt. Col. Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes. Other supporting cast also contribute very effectively to our immersion in the film, notably Sean Toub as Yinsen, and a couple truly nasty terrorists, very nicely portrayed by actors Faran Tahir and Sayed Badreya.
Visual effects abound and it's some of the very best photo-realistic digital animation and special effects you've seen. ILM, the other dozen or so VFX houses and literally hundreds of production artists, engineers, technicians, producers and visual wizards have put their best foot forward and collectively transported us into Starks brave new digital domain. Stunts are seamless and well-executed. Several give the audience a good laugh or a real twinge of the inflicted pain. Audio design, mix and a great musical score also contribute notably to the overall success.
The screenplay writers also signed-on for a major challenge: bring a popular story and characters from the world of comics to a much broader audience of theater goers and make everybody happy. They succeed in bringing story, characters and background to life for us through great writing, plucky dialogue and insightful exposition. Only good screenwriters can also bring out the personality and humor from a team of robots and an unseen computer.
The greatest applause here, however, really goes to Jon Favreau as director. It was fun seeing his cameos in the film as Stark's chauffeur, Hogan, but that's a good disguise for the enormous work he had to put into the creation, organization and execution of this very demanding story, script and visual elements. This was a huge leap from the fantasy world of Elf to the ultra high-tech gleam, glitz and gizmos of Iron Man, and he pulled it off with brilliance. Kudos, Mr. Favreau.
I always stay through the final credits of a film because they tell an important story of how a film was created, crafted and brought to life. Also, because writing and production is my own profession. On occasion this dedication to credit-watching also delivers a final surprise and Iron Man now shares that distinction. That's cool, but the real story to this epilogue is the number of audience members who remained in the theater to savor this little cinematic morsel. I'd say nearly a third of the audience for this 8 PM Saturday night feature remained in the theater. Many were clearly Marvel comic fans, aware that a bonus was about to be paid for their patience. No one was disappointed. Most left buzzing about what it all meant.
Marvel is onto something big here. I just hope it continues to keep Jon Favreau, and others on the creative team, busy making exciting and engaging films for quite sometime to come. It brings to my mind the successes of a franchise from a galaxy, far far away.

I thought the latest Batman movies were great until I saw Iron Man this past weekend. This is by far the best Marvel based movie to date! From the acting, to the story line, to the special effects, this movie will not disappoint anyone. This is going down as one of the great clasics for sure. I haven't heard people applaud a movie in a long time and they went nuts for this film. Iron Man Rocks!

Iron Man isn't just another special effects film that focuses on a gimmick. Without Robert Downey, Jr. inside all that metal, the Iron Man still would have been a cool flick, but with him it's far more. Downey is an intelligent and very underrated actor (a situation he's largely responsible for, but that's another story) and he brings it to the fore here. The story is well-written and smart, without beating the viewer over the head with its messages - though the messages are definitely there. Jon Favreau is a funny, funny guy and his direction excellent here. I loved his Hitchcock-type cameo too. This is a great cast - Bridges' villian is just right. If the upcoming Memorial Day flicks are this good, we viewers are in for some great times at the movie house, if you ask me.

Great for the older kids and Awesome action. Definately a Big Screen movie worth spending the money, especially since everything is more expensive. Will not disapoint

"The trailers for Iron Man promised a lot of action and sarcastic humor, and I'm pleased to see the movie delivered delightfully on both counts. No spoilers, but the nanotech effects with the suit were amazing. Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts was adorable, and the post-credits zinger scene raised the awesomeness of the whole movie to another level.
Loved it!"
