My friends and I enjoyed this movie immensely, the cast and cinematography were excellent. Tolstoy led a privileged life and was considered a saint in his country; his wife was, like all women of her time, held in less esteem although she was a full partner in their intense and emotional marriage. The interplay between this marriage and the love affair of his secretary and one of the commune women emphasized the way man-woman relationships would change in the new century. I had not realized that Tolstoy was such a believer in socialism and had founded a commune. Although I've never read his books, I will now.

Enjoyed the movie immensely. Knowing a little about Tolstoy's life didn't matter one way or the other as this was his last year of life and I found it to be quite real in emotions, love and in general, relationships. True love will rule over everything else.
I'd give it a 5 of 5.

Superb acting. The story is quite interesting. But, it's very slow moving, as it's ALL about emotions, emotions, emotions. Feelings are the topic of the day here. Beautifully filmed, it's about Tolstoy's last days, and about the commune his followers started. i hadn't known that he was a Jesus Christ figure with a cult following, even before his death. Beautiful, superbly acted, but VERY, VERY slow.

The acting is superb, the settings-- both in the Russian countryside and the interiors-- are beautifully detailed. One doesn't need to know about Tolstoy and his wife (though seeing the movie will make most want to know more) The film tells you what you need to know. More than anything, it's about what it means to love, from beginning to end.

The performances by Helen Mirren, Plummer and James McAvoy were EXCELLENT! It also portrayed Tolstoy and his movement of which I had no knowledge and was very interested to learn. It kept my interest throughout. It had romance, suspense, volatile emotions, and personal trickery. The historical piece was very informative. I really enjoyed it. I would have given it 5 stars but I reserve that for the VERY VERY BEST movies I have seen and this came close.

It helps if you're into Tolstoy, but this movie is more about relationships - husband and wife, friends, etc. Tolstoy was a rather unique dude and this movie may not grab you, but if it does you will think about it again and again. Helen Mirrin and Christopher Plummer give great performances.

Mirren, Plummer, Giamatti & McAvoy are all pitch-perfect in this gorgeous film about the last year of Tolstoy's life. There is not a weak spot in this movie. McAvoy impresses and rises to the occasion in the company of some of actings finest thespians! Add to the acting some of the best scenic cinematography in any movie over this last year or so - mix in an excellent script & dialogue and you have a movie that would have made TheMovieRhino's 2009 Top20 list had the Rhino been able to see it earlier. A film that all adults should see in a movie house - if at all possible! Bravo to all!
