It's almost a "Blacksploitation" movie, with some redeeming qualities. I predict it will be a box office success. I agree that Hollywood must stop the overkill with the jittery camera. It's giving us headaches and making us sick. Having said that, there is an artistic quality to many of the scenes. And although you've seen it all before (the plot and the characters), it's still scripted and played out in an interesting way.
Superlative casting. Incredible acting, gorgeous black and white cinematography, artful direction. In the Ingmar Bergman style. A real art movie. You are left to your own conclusions at the end, however. What seems to be beautiful and lovely on the outside turns out to have evil lurking within. Also, the director says that one of the themes is religious (in this case, Protestant) terrorism.
Superb acting. The story is quite interesting. But, it's very slow moving, as it's ALL about emotions, emotions, emotions. Feelings are the topic of the day here. Beautifully filmed, it's about Tolstoy's last days, and about the commune his followers started. i hadn't known that he was a Jesus Christ figure with a cult following, even before his death. Beautiful, superbly acted, but VERY, VERY slow.
This is the ultimate chick flick. It is so incredibly painful to sit through. I was just so bored and thought of all the other things I could be doing. I was so completely not interested in these peoples' lives. The guy's father was the only interesting character. Richard Jenkins is an Oscar nominated best actor, and it shows. Plus, he was autistic, so that made it interesting. I could have cared less about the romance of the young couple. This movie was such a drag. Please read the critics reviews on the Net. They are all universally bad reviews. No one liked it. It is probably a teenage girl's favorite movie. But, oh so terribly difficult for an adult male to sit through.
A cartoon for adults. Quite a story with lessons for everyone. Really funny dialogue. Great cast. I didn't see many kids there. It's really so much for grown ups. But, 10 year olds and up would catch most of the humor. To watch the animals faces is entertaining in itself.
I came home and spent two hours searching the Internet after the movie to find out more about the history-- what was partly true and what was made up. Also spent time researching the many interesting actors.
