The Kids Are All Right hits all the right notes...funny, realistic, entertaining, and well-written. Annette Bening was outstanding as the type A Mom who is flawed but knows it, and is honest enough to apologize and try to make amends. Julianne Moore is also wonderful, and plays her role to the hilt. Mark Ruffalo was a joy to watch, and you just gotta love that guy!! Each character struggles with his or her own issues, and the complexity of family relationships is skillfully depicted as the movie unfolds. I see tons of movies, and I have to say, this one is certainly one of my favorites for the year. I would certainly vote for Annette Bening to win the Oscar for Best Actress in the coming year.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a funny, complex, engaging film--enjoyable and easy to watch; yet there is so much going on in such unexpected ways that it ends up being deeply meaningful. It has great depth and psychological sophistication, but it's also a hoot! Lisa Cholodenko has directed and co-written a great film. The acting is superb, too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie received such glowing reviews, I was really looking forward to seeing it. What a disappointment! The director couldn't seem to decide what her theme was. Was she trying to make a movie about a "real family with two lesbians at the helm;" or was it a movie about "the consequences -- good or bad -- of having children by way of a sperm donor;" or was it a movie about "parents dealing with teenagers, one of which was leaving for college;" or was it a movie about "marital infidelity?" It didn't help that the two women at the center were each one-sided "types" that wouldn't ring true if they had been a heterosexual couple. Or was that the point? The characters were under-developed, even downright shallow. The thin plot didn't go anywhere -- so many "issues" were tossed at the audience, then left hanging. And, in case we didn't "get" that there was tension in this couple's relationship, every bit of dialogue between them contained some form of sniping. I would expect a film that's supposedly aimed at a more sophistocated audience would not resort to hitting its audience over the head to make its points. After awhile, the entire film became downright annoying. As weak as the ending was, it couldn't come soon enough.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I was initially very excited to see this film, unfortunately my excitement was not rewarded. The characters lacked depth, the plot was weak and it does little to demonstrate an accurate representation of of a lesbian couple and their family realistically. There seemed to be little romantic connection between Annette Benning and Julianne Moore and they represented what Hollywood thinks lesbians are. Very disappointing.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

As a lesbian mother, I heard so many good things about this movie that I was eager to see it and went with my fifteen year old daughter (It was my mistake taking my daughter, should have looked to see if it was really suitable for her.) But I myself didn't want to see all that sex between the straight man and supposedly lesbian mother - I can see male/female sex in any movie. While the lesbian family seemed to make it in the end,.things were lukewarm between the two women, and while I can accept that it's like that after a while, it would have been better to have a flashback showing how hot they were for each other in the beginning. Without this, the film gives the impression that if a woman wants real sex she's got to find a man to f-- her - that relationships between women are about support and cuddling but not "real" sex. Which many people think to begin with, so it fostered that myth. In fact, the only sexy, dynamic person in the whole film was the straight man. I liked the children and the scenery. Other than that, forget it. I left feeling really let down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Sure looked and sounded like real life to me, from the relationship between the two women, to the kids and their moms and each other. Excellent to have a good, solid movie for grownups this summer - or anytime for that matter. Well acted by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore - and the kids were absolutely all right.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it. The acting was very good and the story/plot is an interesting concept. The characters could have been developed more as several popped in and out and it left me wondering why they were in the movie at all. You basically knew what was going to happen from the start and the ending was shallow. It kept my interest throughout but did not make me think too deeply (which I would have liked).

Forget about the lesbian couple at the center of the story, it is really about the resilience, the slack one gives the others, flexibility and forgiving nature that is at the heart of loving family. The characters have depth and are very real. Not one of those films that never meets expectations.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
