This movie received such glowing reviews, I was really looking forward to seeing it. What a disappointment! The director couldn't seem to decide what her theme was. Was she trying to make a movie about a "real family with two lesbians at the helm;" or was it a movie about "the consequences -- good or bad -- of having children by way of a sperm donor;" or was it a movie about "parents dealing with teenagers, one of which was leaving for college;" or was it a movie about "marital infidelity?" It didn't help that the two women at the center were each one-sided "types" that wouldn't ring true if they had been a heterosexual couple. Or was that the point? The characters were under-developed, even downright shallow. The thin plot didn't go anywhere -- so many "issues" were tossed at the audience, then left hanging. And, in case we didn't "get" that there was tension in this couple's relationship, every bit of dialogue between them contained some form of sniping. I would expect a film that's supposedly aimed at a more sophistocated audience would not resort to hitting its audience over the head to make its points. After awhile, the entire film became downright annoying. As weak as the ending was, it couldn't come soon enough.
