It takes some genuine skill to make a movie about an historical figure and historical events that everyone is aware of and still create an aura of dramatic tension that has the movie watching public "bare-knuckling" it during the races .... as if we do not know the outcomes! Add to this well-paced movie lots of gorgeous Kentucky blue grass cinematography .... and scrumptious dialogue .... and pitch perfect acting from some of our favorite seasoned actors (Lane, Malkovich, Walsh and Cromwell to name a few) ... and some well-told back story about the greatest race horse of all time and his owner and - need I say it - you have the makings for a truly great historical sports movie about a champion! Secretariat is spectacular - see it!

This is a great movie for both adults and children. I took my thirteen year old daughter to see it, and wasn't really expecting to enjoy it much myself, but I was really surprised. It's a very emotional, captivating movie. I would most definitely go see it again, and will be buying it when it's released on DVD.

It made me laugh as well as made me cry! I have always been a Derby fan. I have looked forward to seeing it since Derby week this year when I first heard that it would be out this fall. I will be back to see it at least one more time, more if I get a chance.

I was in my early 20's when Secretariat was racing and I remember cheering and praying he would win all races, then going crazy watching him win the Triple Crown. However, I had forgotten how truly "spectacular" that winning event was. Secretariat was the underdog, owned by a woman, who was a housewife--all marks against him--not to mention many felt he was too big to be a truly great racer. Watching this movie brought it all back--and all the exciting, great feelings with it! I agree with the jockey who rode him who said in an interview--(paraphrase) "God decided to create the perfect horse" -- He did indeed!

Finally, a movie comes along with hopes raised high, hits the silver screen and knocks it out of the ballpark. These types of movies don’t often get included in best picture selection, but this one probably should.
The potential audience for this is vast. I was 14 years old when Secretariat took the last Triple Crown won in this country. I think everybody in the country watched that last race. Yet it is long enough ago, 36 years that the memory has faded for most people, like me at least. I don’t suppose the timing could have been better to revive the memory of this great feat. On the other hand, as Disney is famous for, they made this a movie that kids will love and want to see over again. At the afternoon showing today with my entire family I saw numerous older couples. While there were a few kids, I’m not sure this movie has even been recognized as top material for kids and families. When parents recognize what a great family film this is, they will flock to it. ANYBODY, 6 and up is likely to enjoy the film.
Like Blind Side, most of the best movies are factual depictions. This movie is really nothing more than a movie about the American dream. It’s about how anybody can be a success if they try hard enough. It also goes into just enough ancillary information and background that everything makes complete sense. Looking back, I don’t think a line in the final production script was wasted. Every line and scene had a purpose.
I realize it may be hard to imagine a story about a horse as being a great movie to watch. Yet from the first frame to the last, this movie had my complete attention. Nobody loves a hero more than Americans. Like most stories about heroes, there is a lot more in the background than meets the eye. I’m sure there were dozens of failures in similar situations as this past and present. While those stories may be interesting there is nothing like the story of those that come out on top.
John Malkovich does an excellent job playing the trainer in the film. I suppose it’s possible, he could be nominated for best supporting actor. He really did a great job keeping this alive and believable. Diane Lane plays the lead role and like most in the film is a relatively unknown face. While certainly not rookies, there was no need to pay tens of millions for the movie stars of today that seem to be in such high demand for what passes as contemporary “art”. Please, just give me a good script, a good story and reasonable actors. The rest will take care of itself. Every actor/actress in this film was more than adequate to their role.
I can tell you that tears were being shed all around me throughout the movie. It’s not an obvious tearjerker, but if this movie doesn’t move you on occasion, no movie will. There is drama, humor, suspense and heroism. Even though we all know how it ends, it feels like you are reliving it, one incredible race after another.
Whether you see this by yourself, with a date, your spouse or family…anyway whichever, you will enjoy it. Don’t miss one of the best films this year-

As soon as I got home from seening "Secretariat" I wrote my friends to recommend the movie. Many of us were young adults when this horse made history. John Malkovich plays his part the best. There is no nudity, no vulgarity, and no bad language to notice in this movie, yet it still tells a good story. If you love history or horses, this is a good movie to see.

This movie was family-friendly & very entertaining. It taught valuable life-lessons, such as not quitting, but going for your dreams, even when it's tempting & more "secure" to give up or stop mid-stream. The fact this is based on a true story is even more amazing! We have twin 2nd gr. boys & they were on the edge of their seats (as were myself & my husband) as Secretariat raced...Must see movie for families (nice to have a good one) or anyone! My 10 year old daughter and I saw the movie last night and it was amazing. We should have waited to see it with my husband who was working. He "met" Secretariat when he was in grade school in Kentucky and said he'd never seen a horse with so much personality. We have a picture of Secretariat in a field with the sunset - just like one of the scenes they showed in the movie. I LOVED it and would see it again.

This is absolutely one of the best movies I've seen in years. The cinematography is incredible and the cast is outstanding. The story and music are uplifting and make you wish the movie didn't end! This movie was great for so many reasons...Great script, wonderful acting, action packed, and a great horse!! I enjoyed this movie so much and was so glad to see the high moral content and loved the Bible references. It's a great example of a great family movie w/o all the bad language, sex & violence that Hollywood gives in so many movies. Thought the owner, Penny, moved between wife, business woman, mother and daughter with ease. The movie had so much good action in it and the acting was superb. It was also really interesting at the end when there were photos of the actual people and how much they looked like the actors...great casting!! It was a much better story than I thought it would be, it was well played and the filming was right on...GREAT JOB!!!

Great Family movie. One of the best I have seen in a long time.. Even tho I knew the story from 1973, the movie just made things very real. Actors were fantastic...Wish we could have more of this type of movies... Our theatre kept rooting for the winner and broke out in applause at the end of the move...

We were soooo glad to see this movie on opening day. Diane Lane is talented and classy as Penny and brings such heart to the movie. The racing footage draws you in to experience the feeling that rider and jockey share. Absolutely the best family movie I have seen in years...probably since "The Rookie". Both are Disney films...imagine that!
