I've seen it twice. The first time was thrilling! The second time gave me a better understanding of the characters and their intentions, as well as time to determine if this movie was really all it's been cracked up to be. Yes, I believe it is. Although it is extremely predictable, the visuals and action open the movie up to so much more than the premise. This is a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen or the element of grandeur will be lost. See it. Twice.

This movie is all about the visuals. The FX team did incredible work, and the whole alien world is incredible. Definitely worth seeing for the eye candy.
The story is derivative drivel. It's completely predictable and many of the characters are wooden movie stereotypes.
The 3D was a neat effect, but it kept bothering me because elements outside the center of the screen where blurry/out of focus.

The movie I think I really want to see is on- how they made Avatar. The story was stereotypical. We needed to know more about the characters to understand or care why they were doing what they were doing. So don't care but enjoy the trip which really is wonderful and expansive. I want to fly my own Tera-dactyl through the gardens of hanging mountains. Way too much violence at the end, we get it , My kids and I don't need to see flying body parts and what happened to "all life is precious". Couldn't the movie transcend and show new ways to handle conflict over resources?

This movie's plot may have been predictable but, it was visually very beautiful and awesome. We saw it on a 3D IMAX screen and it was definately worth the extra cost. It had a different feel than your standard 3D, where things come out of the screen towards you. It was as if you were walking through the forests with them. This gave it a very realistic feel and we really enjoyed that. I would like to see more 3D movies made like that.

From a visual standpoint this movie is amazing. The story line has been seen before, but the 3-D and CGI make this dream world and your imagination want it to be as real as is looks.
I'm sure most everyone in the US has seen this movie by now, as it has taken me 6 weeks just to get tickets before they sold out, but if you haven't seen it in 3-D, don't wait any longer. It's awesome!
I will own this when it hits DVD, since I will likely have my 3-D ready TV by then.

I am not really into sci-fi movies but I wanted to see this one. To be sure I got the full effect of the film, I decided to see it in 3D before it left the theater. Needless to say, this film was worth every one of the 2 hours 40 minutes. It was exciting, touching, action-packed and yes, even romantic. I was pleasantly surprised mostly because, though not Oscar quality, the acting significantly contributed to the likeability of the film.

This was a movie that was worth the admission price, and mine was hefty with taking a family of five ranging from 8 to 50. This movie was done so well that it is liked from young to senior. The 3-D effects were great but the brilliance of color was so stunning that You actually think your on another planet. The story I felt was good being about greedy industrialist hiring mercinaries to forcibly relocate a species on their planet from their Sacred Holy Land so the rich Mineral underneath can be mined. If You missed this on the big screen..You missed a lot of good movie!

My wife and I both really loved this movie! The 3D aspect was amazing, but the story itself was excellent as well. Coming in at over 2.5 hrs, the movie never feels rushed. You really come to understand the motivations behind the protagonist's decisions, which in turn makes later scenes so much more engaging and emotional. I'm really looking forward to the sequel!

this movie should be in the category "Animated". It combined the Lord of the Rings, every cowboy and indian story, science fiction, Romeo and Juliet....and the whole thing was aimed at kids. I'm a senior and love movies, but shades of Soylent Green, Avatar is a world with just one grownup and one cliche military bad guy. In the 50's the same guys were using the Atom Bomb on ants. Now they are using Shock and Awe on a world of teen age natives. Don't these people have aunts, uncles, Wise Elders? The visual effects were stunning,however.

The visual effects were wonderful. I felt like the whole thing was right in my lap! However, the movie is very definitely making a point about the gruesomeness of war. When the giant bulldozer came up over the ridge I felt like I would throw up. There is a tremendous amount of violence in this film. The US military were definitely portrayed as the bad guys. I am glad that we have freedom of speech in the USA because this movie would be banned in a lot of countries if they were the target of its message.

MUST see in 3-D...hurry before it leaves the theaters! Absolutely beautiful scenery and characters. Stunning. The story HAS been done before (think Dances with Wolves) but it is in the WAY it is told here that is truly fantastic. DO NOT take your kids to see this, though. My husband and I are parents and we were STUNNED to see kids in the theater. The battle scenes in the last 1/3 of the movie are WAY too intense for kids under 13'ish. I let my 8 1/2 year old see some PG-13 movies...but this will NOT be one of them!

I had no idea Dances with Wolves II could be worse than the first. I would have expected something more than cool special effects and a climax scene that scarcely distracted the audience from this movie's otherwise mediocre attempt at a plot. Score, supporting cast, and character development were appalling considering this movie was as hyped as Gladiator.
Even if you can put aside the not-so-subtle left-wing ideology in this movie's tired themes (rapacious white man loses to spiritual natives), you would be better off watching Titanic again. At least that movie develops its themes rather than relying on stereotype and faux drama.
Two stars for glowing jellyfish gods and robotic war machines copied from Iron Man.

My son calls "Avatar" "'Pocahontas' with blue Indians," which is appropriate, since the script seems to be Pocahontas plus dashes of "Die Hard," "Rambo," "Robocop," "Godzilla," "Independence Day," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Star Wars," "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," "Alien," "Lord of the Rings," "Starship Troopers"...oh, crimony, EVERY action movie of the past 35 years and then some. And then there are the funny parts, like the ore called "unobtanium," and the 3D shots of Upsydaisyland from the "Rocky & Bullwinkle" cartoons. But what pictures! "Avatar" is a true epic--sprawling and all that--and the 3D stuff is amazing. So, I say, "Enjoy." Not every movie has to be a deep treatise on the human condition to be worthwhile.

Brilliant movie. Following principles of Deep Ecology, James Cameron weaves a tail of fantastic creatures living in harmony with nature. There are elements of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's noble savages, American Indians, shamanic knowledge, Medieval romance, a hero's quest and savage attacks against corporate and government mentality and greed. Good food for thought and a visual feast.

He went 12 YEARS before coming back and BREAKING HIS OWN RECORD. Doesn't that say it all? This is my new favorite movie of the 21st Century and I'm sure it will be for some time to come. Cameron has set the bar higher in every way. Each time I see Avatar I come away with a little bit more.

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, the story keep our interest throughout the movie and the photography was unbelievable. We took our 9 yo grandson and he thought it was great. Will probably see it again.
