I expected to enjoy the sound and visual effects but had little expectations about getting drawn into the story. I was blown away by the entire experience! The underlying messages about our connection with "all of it" and a kind of sacred relationship we have with all of life really touched me. The 3-D and other effects are great, and my recommendation is absolutely go see this movie with an open heart so you might breath in who we are for one another and the difference we each make in this world. -Irwin

Same story as Pocahontas with an excellent high-tech and special effects twist. Eye-filling and magical. I think the movie was artfully done. The characters and their obvious Hero/Villain status were a lot like Titanic--not really a bad thing. You just recognize the hand behind the camera and the pen in many elements of this movie. Worth the price of admission without qualification.

The new digital 3D technology is amazing--I really felt as if I had been immersed in an alien world. Which is good, because if I had to watch this (3 hour) movie in 2-D, I would have left half way through. The script was absolutely archaic, and the borderline racist depiction of the white soldier becoming the "saviour" of the native Na'vi race was like something from the cinema of the last century. Overall, I was glad to have seen Avatar 3D in the theater, but would NEVER watch this at home in 2D--and once was enough for me.

This was the first time, in a really long time, that I finished watching a movie and the only thing I could say was "WOW"..I was blown away by how much this movie exceeded my expectations. I was worried it would be overblown and silly...I am glad to report it was none of those things, and I found myself really rooting for, and caring about, the characters...kudos to the actors and crew...I really enjoyed this movie!

I think James Cameron missed an opportunity to change our view of the military. Instead he had the one hero plot. There were sub heroes, but he could have changed the way the military reacted and the consumerism/destroyer of nature view of the U.S. It was too long, but the effects were nice. The credits were almost as long as the movie. Hope he made enough to pay them all.

As many of the critics stated, I think the graphics are better than the plot but still worth seeing. Graphics were awesome and at times made me feel like I was part of the movie. The only thing better would have been watching at IMAX.

Prior to the first time seeing this film I was skeptical of the odd looking alien characters and of big budget adventure movies in general. But James Cameron succeeded in creating an entirely new world with characters I can sympathize with and an amazing display of cinematography/visual effects.
Sure most film snobs will not enjoy Avatar because it's dialog isn't great and the acting isn't always superb, yet I still stand by my belief that this was the best film of 2009 and is far more entertaining than The Hurt Locker. The 3D effects simply make it more believable and allow the audience to invest more fully their attention and their emotions.
A very well done piece of visual storytelling and I'd recommend it to most anyone!

This movie was fun and the special effects were entertaining. Suspend logic and it can be worth the two hours forty minutes. The acting was mediocre at best, the charachters were cliche and poorly developed. The story was preachy and depended on aliens and an alien world in a failed attempt to be unique and imaginitive. Avatar missed an opportunity to develop more complete charachters and story lines with difficult though provoking dilemas to deal with. Adults capable of becoming a teenager for a couple hours will like this predictable simplistic tale. Often the case with big hype movies this one was Oerhyped. Don't have too high of expectations and you may enjoy it.

Forget the hype. The movie is that good. The obvious amazing things are the graphics, CGI, etc. Importantly, it was the story line and plot that was so great. One of the most powerful movies you will see- especially if you pay attention to the moral and the message. An amazing movie and a great way to teach kids about taking care of what we have. Also a spectacular love story- learning to love the soul of the person- not the exterior. Absolutely a beautiful and mesmerizing film. You will fall in love with it.

This is such a great movie! This is a timeless story. It doesn't matter who you are, what your religion is, your politics, etc., you can connect to this movie. I had to remain seated for a while when it ended because I was just too emotional to get up and leave.
See it in 3D if you can!!!

The movie was very much worth experiencing but seemed to be a future remake of dances with wolves. You would think the writers could come up with a fresh idea for the story line. Avatar is very predictable and offers no new turns. The special effects were fantastic and the new animals and ecosystem were the hit of the show. If you like computer generated movies and games you will love this movie.
