The story wasn't bad, just somewhat predictable - I do think it could have been written to make me feel for the characters more, by keeping it more personal and making it less of a "epic chronicles of war" that the second half becomes.
The 3D effect was impressive, but the relative dimness and blurriness made me wonder whether I should go see it again as a 2D movie to see if I can get even more enjoyment out of the visuals apart from the 3D experience.
One tip, the movie is long and has so much eye candy it can be demanding on your senses, to get your money's worth make sure to see this when you're wide awake and well-fed - going to a very late night showing might be somewhat of a waste.

I was amazed and glad my wife had me spend the extra money on the 3-D.The special effects aren't overdone, and despite its length, there really aren't any slow spots; the movie just sucks you in. We both thought it was one of the best movies we've ever seen. The plot was actually pretty good even if most of the elements can be found in bits and pieces elsewhere. This is one I would say you have to see in the theater to truly appreciate its splendor (even if you have an HD tv - I do).

I was so surprised by this movie! I thought I would just be cool looking but the story was very thoughtful and really made social statements. The acting was also very nice and I'm glad the film didn't have hugely famous actors because it made the characters seem more real. Lastly the 3D aspect of the movie was very thoughtful. It wasn't like kids movies were things are constantly in your face it just added depth to the scenes and actually helped versus hindering the story by adding obtrusive visuals. I would give Avatar 10 stars if I could and I will definitely see it many more times!

After having just returned from seeing Avatar (in 3D), I can now inform those poor souls out there who aren't in the know.
I found myself gaping at the screen a great portion of the film. I was literally in awe of the beautiful world sprawling suddenly before me.
The story is only somewhat predictable, but let me tell you this, my friend: nothing else here is familiar.
When the audience continues to sit for 10 minutes after the movie ends, talking to each other about the unbelievable adventure they just shared... That's when you know that you just witnessed true movie magic.

I took my sixteen year old youngest son to it last night at its opening and loved the movie. Never has the visuals been so incredibly realistic and being set in an alien world of such beauty was stupendous. Never a dull moment in the movie. Will probably see it again. Storyline was good though a little predictable. Fantasy at its best and I am sure more and better will come. Computer animation has come of age.

During the movie I watched movie goers... grown men, leaning forward in their seats deeply immersed in the battle scenes, as if they were trying to either assist the Na'vi or maybe meld with the winged creatures... Women were teary as their hearts were pulled in so many directions...

yes yes I would say cheesy plot but still good movie...the character is named Jake again!!!YAY!!so I was like "if jake dies again I will cry" in the end, he......go watch the movie =) it was really really good with the 3D and all that stuff, "Pandora" is really cool. I'm just not sure that the market and the audience out there is ready to make a completely sci-fi movie a classic like Titanic. I remember seeing the trailer for this movie in the summer and my jaw dropped while I watched it. And last night at the Midnight showing I wasn't disappointed. If you have a choice of seeing it in Real 3D or IMAX 3D then it is a must see. James Cameron isn't cheap on the 3D like Harry Potter was where is was only the first 15 minutes. After seeing this I was there was a place like this to go to, it would be worth the trip. The story is well thought out and there isn't any parts of the movie that drag out. I hope that if there is a sequel that it is as good as this one. Also it is a great movie for the family and it has a great ideals that could be talked about long after the movie.

I'll keep it short. CGI=Awesome. Its got the best CGI I've ever seen. Weta worked its magic to outstanding results. Really, check out the facial movements of the Na'vi. Immersion in a Complete Alien World=Awesome. Watch it in 3D is my recommendation. Worth the extra bucks. Story=Good, but not great. Its fairly straight forward and pretty easy to see what's coming, but because the CGI was done so well, you really feel for the characters. I've never felt more strongly for an animated character. All around a great movie, what ever the short coming of the script(and I don't fault James Cameron for that, he's a Director 1st and then a writer) the total package more than makes up for it.

I saw this movie last night. With the regular march of mundane movies lately, I wasn't prepared for this - I expected mediocre. Instead, I got awesome and stunning. It runs long, but you won't notice unless you look at the time. The plot is enthralling, and complete at the end. The music accentuates the visuals perfectly. Visuals and full 3D are beyond belief. If you haven't watched it yet - it is well worth seeing it in Digital 3D. I am going to go and see it again tonight.

Great movie. Really enjoyed it. The special effects are pretty amazing. Not as life-changinga s Jurassic Park, but the closest movie to that feeling since. The 3d was really well done and not overblown. The storyline was predictable but well thought out. The movie is long but the pace is pretty good. This is miles beyond the typical sci-fi pic I definitely give it that. I especially appreciated Sigourney and the various nods to Aliens throughout the movie it was almost a counterpart to that film in many aspects. Overall go see it you'll enjoy it.

The aspect of this film that was most hyped, the 3D CGI, is the highest quality I’ve seen – truly immersive. Completely worth the $15.

I stayed up way past the call of bedtime to watch this movie. So even being semi comatose from being tired, I was enthralled with this feature. The 3D graphics pull you into every scene, looking so real I itched to reach out to touch what wasn't there. I fell in love with the concept of this film before it was even out and I fell even harder when I saw it. This movie shows just how powerful the human imagination can be. James Cameron delivered not only a compelling story but, stunning visuals with nail biting action. He also accomplished the most important part of movie-making/storytelling and that's to send a message. Overall this was an incredible movie experience one that everybody should enjoy.

Genius James Cameron has done it again! I dont know how he manages to make timeless classics again and again but he does and he has. Avatar was AMAZING on so many levels- technically groundbreaking, GORGEOUS character designs- the facial proportions of the blue Na'vi were beautiful(and as someone with an animation background-I am critical!), great story, great acting, & the thing I loved most was the strong message about the importance of respecting the sacredness of nature, and respecting and honoring the spirit in all animals and trees, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Moving & Beautiful! Even my 25 yr old brother who is jaded and hard to please LOVED it.

This movie was phenomenal! The story was great! The characters were lovable and relatable. But the cinematography was the best part by far! The world of Pandora is worth the $13 alone! Its incredible! I would say that the weak points of this movie are the cliche lines and stereotypical actions and that might be what keeps it from winning Best Picture. There is some cussing involved and viloence does ocurr with humans as well, but other than that, This movie is a must see for all ages!

We went to the midnight screening......The magic of big-screen cimema is back. Definately a must-see movie....and make sure you see the 3-D movie version or you'll lose out on the unique personal experience you get from the movie. It's the depth you experience of the scenes and how whats buzzing and floating in the air interacts with the characters that makes the movie seem more real. The creative mind of James Cameron is amazing. The story and the characters are fun. The alien world he has created in this movie, from the tribes people, the animals, the plants, the geography and land they live on, all become real and believable thru the story.

Sure, the visuals were unlike any i've ever seen, but the screenplay is torturously bad. The dialogue will have you cringing in your seat and the storyline is cliche, formulaic, dull, and insanely predictable. Cameron doesn't effectively create any emotional ties between the audience and the characters, so when major characters die off, nobody really cares. Don't waste your money and time on this stunningly beautiful piece of crud. But if my review doesn't persuade you against seeing it, at least don't see it in 3D. I don't know what happened, but the 3D used in Avatar is horrible. I felt cross-eyed throughout the movie and had to keep just one eye open to fix this problem. Bottom line, this was the most overrate, overhyped movie of '09.
